Abstract

This study examines the use of code mixing on the YouTube channels of beauty vloggers Tasya Farasya and Nanda Arsyinta. It seeks to examine the various forms of code mixing according to Muysken's (2000) theory as well as the fundamental causes of the two beauty vloggers' language mixing in their videos according to Saville-Troike's (1986) theory. This study uses qualitative research methodology. The results of the research show that 210 extracts describe the types of code mixing found in the utterances of the two beauty vloggers Nanda Arsyinta and Tasya Farasya on YouTube channel. Based on Muysken's theory (2000), there are 3 types of reasons were also found underlying speakers mixing their languages, namely insertion (159), alternation (6), and congruent lexicalization (45). Based on Saville-Troike's theory (1986), 3 types of reasons were also found that underlying speakers' code-mixing, namely to strengthen requests or commands (5), lexical need (84), and to exclude other people (54). Additionally, the researcher found one reason that was not included in the Saville-Troike theory because the researcher felt that the three reasons put forward by Saville-Troike were not enough to cover all the extracts found. Apart from that, to strengthen the new reasons found, the researcher watched other videos from the two beauty vloggers and then concluded that because of habits are one of the appropriate reasons to use as a basis for speakers to mix their languages. There are 67 extracts found in this case. Based on 210 data observed, the research concluded that the most dominant type of code-mixing was insertion, while the most dominant reason why speakers mixed their languages was lexical need. Keywords: Code-Mixing, Types, Reasons, Beauty Vloggers, YouTube Videos

Abstract

Abstract

The implementation of English language learning at the elementary school level in Indonesia continues to face significant challenges. One widely proposed solution to address these challenges is the integration of digital technology into English language instruction. The Fun Digital Class program aims to introduce and enhance elementary students’ vocabulary acquisition at SD Inpres Cambaya IV Makassar. Through the use of the Duolingo application, this program provides an engaging and effective method for English vocabulary learning, helping students build a strong foundation in language learning while fostering a positive attitude toward foreign language acquisition, particularly English. This program was conducted over a period of two months and involved 20 students from grades 4 to 6 (aged 10–12 years) who participated in an extracurricular English language program titled Fun Digital Class. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, considering that they shared a similar basic proficiency level in English, which was generally categorized as low. The program was implemented in three phases: the Preparation Phase, the Implementation Phase, and the Evaluation Phase. During its execution, the program successfully stimulated students’ enthusiasm and motivation in learning English vocabulary. As a result, participants demonstrated improved comprehension and mastery of English vocabulary by the end of the program. Furthermore, the majority of students expressed enjoyment and gratitude for the implementation of this program at their school, as it provided them with an engaging and enjoyable English learning experience.

Abstract

Metaphor is one of the essential elements of language that reflects a person’s level of creativity and capacity for abstract thinking. This study aims to identify the relationship between students’ personalities—based on the Big Five Personality model—and their ability to construct metaphors in English, using the theoretical framework of Lakoff & Johnson (1980). Employing a quantitative correlational approach, the research involved 65 active students from the English Literature Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar, selected through stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the Indonesian-adapted version of the Big Five Personality questionnaire (IPIP) and a metaphor writing test consisting of 20 items. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the dimension Openness to Experience had a strong and significant positive relationship with metaphor construction ability, establishing it as the strongest predictor. Conscientiousness also showed a significant positive correlation, while Neuroticism had a significant negative correlation. In contrast, Extraversion and Agreeableness were not significantly associated with metaphor ability. These findings highlight that certain personality aspects—particularly openness to experience and self-discipline—play an important role in supporting students’ linguistic creativity, especially in metaphorical expression.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of heutagogy in mobile-based English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching within Indonesian higher education, examining its challenges and benefits. Emphasizing learner autonomy, engagement, and motivation, the research employs a qualitative design, involving semi-structured interviews with EFL instructors and students from two Indonesian universities. Thematic analysis reveals cultural barriers to heutagogy, such as traditional teacher-centered methods, hierarchical structures, cultural norms, and language proficiency issues. Despite these challenges, notable advantages include enhanced learner autonomy, engagement, collaboration, communication skills, critical thinking, and the promotion of lifelong learning attitudes. The findings suggest that heutagogical approaches in mobile-based EFL teaching hold promise for Indonesian higher education. The study advocates for the adoption of heutagogical principles, alongside comprehensive training for educators, to foster more learner-centered environments. It also underscores the need for further research to develop strategies to address the challenges and evaluate the long-term effects on student learning outcomes, thereby advancing EFL teaching practices in the region.
