Abstract

Reading comprehension is a part of English language learning in Indonesia since the students, based on the Kurikulum 2013, are required to learn and read many kinds of texts. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the use of short stories in enhancing students’ reading comprehension. This study is conducted using the quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design (one group pre-posttests design). The pre-posttests are used to obtain data related to students’ reading comprehension. Those tests consist of 10 questions that are generated from two texts prepared by the researchers. 36 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bolaang are the object of this study. The data is then analyzed using the mean score formula and standard deviation formula. The findings show that the mean score of the pre-test is 4.4, and the standard deviation is 1.5. Meanwhile, the mean score of the post-test is 5.6, and the standard deviation of the post-test is 1.6. It indicates that students’ reading performance in the post-test is better than their performance before the treatment (pre-test). So, it is concluded that short stories are an effective technique to be used in increasing students’ reading comprehension. Teachers of English at junior high school are recommended to use short stories in teaching reading comprehension to help students understand the reading materials.

Abstract

Listening ability is one of the important language skills for students in understanding foreign languages. However, students often have difficulty in developing their listening skills. Therefore, the use of songs as a tool in foreign language learning has become popular among educators and researchers. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using songs in improving students' listening skills. In this study, a quantitative method was applied through one group pre test and post test. In the study there were 25 students as samples in the study and each of them was in grade 9. The instrument used in collecting data is a test. The results of this study show that the use of song can effectively improve students' listening skills in English. This can be seen from the mean difference between pre test (57.8) and post test (81.6). The use of songs can improve students' listening comprehension and skills through several ways, such as improving vocabulary recognition skills, practicing context understanding, and increasing students' motivation and interest in foreign language learning. However, the effectiveness of using songs in foreign language learning depends on certain factors, such as the suitability of songs with learning objectives, the suitability of songs with students' ability levels, and the way of teaching carried out by teachers or instructors.

Abstract

It is good if English has been introduced since childhood to Indonesian children so that it will not become a frightening specter for them later. In the 2013 curriculum, elementary schools do not have English as a subject, because English has always been a local content subject. However, the obstacle in teaching English is that there are still many elementary school students who are not interested in this subject. The reason is that English is a new language for them and they don't have sufficient vocabulary mastery. Because of that, during English lessons, the teacher teaches only a few students who pay attention, there are many students who play, they feel bored and unenthusiastic when learning English. This was faced by students of the SD GP in Raanan Baru Village, Motoling District, causing them to be unenthusiastic and less creative when it came to English lessons. Therefore, teachers must pay attention to learning models that are appropriate to their goals, not boring but can motivate students and attract their attention, namely choosing learning media can help improve vocabulary mastery. Therefore, in this study, the writer used Visual media pop-up book to improve English vocabulary mastery of the students of SD GP Raanan Baru. The results of this study showed a significant difference, namely the results of the post-test were better than the pre-test as evidenced by the average post-test (T2) score of 71.2 with a standard deviation of 13.5, while the average value of the pre- test (T1) is 30 and the standard deviation is 11.1

These favorable opinions highlight the usefulness of TBL as a method of instruction that adheres to the fundamentals of communicative language learning and promotes successful language learning outcomes. It is clear from the survey results that TBL is well-liked by students at The Bridge Education Manado. These findings have effects on how the institution teaches languages. First and foremost, it is essential to keep supporting TBL as a pedagogical strategy and to offer ongoing assistance and chances for professional growth to teachers so they can use TBL techniques in the classroom. They would better comprehend TBL ideas, techniques, and material production as a result of this. Collaboration among educators can also encourage the sharing of creative TBL implementation ideas and best practices.
