Abstract

The integration of 21st-century learning and generic science skills (GSS) is critical in developing students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), especially in chemistry education. This quasi-experimental study aimed to analyze the effects of implementing four GSS-integrated digital learning models (PjBL-GSS, PBL-GSS, IBL-GSS, and DL-GSS) and students’ initial abilities on their HOTS performance. A total of 397 students participated, grouped by initial ability levels and assigned to different learning models. Data were collected using validated instruments including scholastic tests and HOTS assessments, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and two-way ANOVA. The results showed significant effects of both initial abilities and learning models on HOTS, with IBL-GSS being the most effective, especially for high-ability students. Moreover, significant interactions were found between initial ability and the type of model used. The study suggests that selecting appropriate digital learning models based on students' prior knowledge is essential to foster optimal HOTS outcomes. Teachers are encouraged to align instructional design with both GSS indicators and students’ learning readiness.

Abstract

Understanding chemical bonding remains challenging for secondary school students’ due to its abstract nature, often leading to suboptimal learning outcomes. This study investigates the effect of instructional models on students’ learning outcomes by comparing Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) supported by animated video media. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The sample consisted of Grade X students’ at SMA Negeri 11 Medan, selected through purposive sampling and divided into two experimental groups. Data were analyzed using Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, and Independent Sample t-test. The results indicate a statistically significant difference between the groups Sig. (2-tailed) < α (0.007 < 0.05), with higher mean scores observed in the PjBL group. The effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.01) suggests a large and practically meaningful impact. These findings demonstrate that PjBL, when integrated with animated video media, is more effective than IBL in improving students’ understanding of chemical bonding. The study highlights the importance of aligning instructional models with appropriate learning media to enhance conceptual learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a Google Sites–based web learning media integrated with the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on hydrocarbon material for senior high school students. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 2 Percut Sei Tuan using a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the 4D development model, consisting of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The subjects of the study were 34 students of class XI-E. Data were collected through interviews, validation questionnaires, learning outcome tests (pretest and posttest), and teacher and student response questionnaires. The feasibility of the developed media was assessed by material and media experts based on BSNP standards. The results showed that the Google Sites web learning media integrated with the PBL model was categorized as very feasible, with an average validation score of 3.58 for material aspects and 3.51 for media aspects. The effectiveness of the media was indicated by a significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes, with the average pretest score increasing from 36.76 to a posttest score of 87.20 and an N-gain value of 0.79, which falls into the high category. Furthermore, teacher and student responses toward the developed media were very positive, indicating high interest, clarity of material, and ease of use. These findings suggest that Google Sites web learning media integrated with the PBL model is effective in improving students’ understanding and learning outcomes in hydrocarbon material and can be used as an innovative alternative learning media in chemistry instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for a discovery learning-based e-module integrated with PhET simulation on reaction rates for grade XI senior high school and to evaluate its feasibility based on BSNP criteria. The research employed the Research & Development (R&D) method with the 4D model (define, design, develop, disseminate), limited to the develop stage. Instruments included interview guides, student needs questionnaires, and validation sheets. The findings revealed that the chemistry learning process at SMAN 14 Medan remains teacher-centered with lecture methods, causing students to be passive and struggle with conceptual understanding. Teaching materials are confined to textbooks, with no e-modules available. The developed e-module fulfilled the BSNP criteria, achieving average validity scores of 90.27% (material aspect) and 88.68% (media aspect), both in the highly valid category. The novelty of this study lies in integrating discovery learning with PhET simulation into an e-module for reaction rate topics, offering an interactive alternative to conventional textbooks. Abstract

Chemistry education on colloid systems presents persistent challenges due to the abstract and submicroscopic nature of the concepts involved, which conventional instructional methods struggle to address effectively. This study aimed to develop Augmented Reality (AR)-based chemistry learning media integrated with local wisdom for colloid system instruction, evaluate its validity and practicality, and measure its effectiveness in reducing misconceptions and improving students' learning outcomes. Using the ADDIE development model with a one-group pretest-posttest design, the study was conducted at SMA Swasta Methodist 7 Medan involving 26 students of class XI IPA. The developed media consisted of two AR marker-based learning tools: AR Link 1 covering dispersed substances, dispersion media, and colloid types contextualized through local cultural examples such as gulai and teh talua, and AR Link 2 visualizing colloid properties including Brownian motion, the Tyndall effect, coagulation, dialysis, adsorption, and electrophoresis through animated microscopic representations. Validation results showed average scores of 4.4 (content) and 4.3 (language) categorized as valid, and a perfect score of 5 (very valid) across all media aspects. The instrument validation reached 93.1%, categorized as highly feasible. Student learning interest ranged from good to very good (74.04%–80%), and observation data confirmed active participation (75%–95%). The N-gain score of 0.64 indicated moderate improvement in conceptual understanding, while posttest results demonstrated substantial reduction of misconceptions across all colloid concepts. The AR-based media integrated with local wisdom was concluded to be valid, practical, and effective for colloid system learning.

Abstract

Sifat abstrak dari konten materi, pendidikan tradisional yang berpusat pada guru, dan penggunaan teknologi interaktif yang tidak memadai dalam pembelajaran kooperatif sering disalahkan atas rendahnya hasil pembelajaran kimia dalam kategorisasi hidrokarbon. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan media Kahoot bersama dengan Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik (LKPD) dan model pembelajaran Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) secara signifikan meningkatkan hasil pembelajaran kimia dalam konten kategorisasi hidrokarbon. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kelompok kontrol tidak ekuivalen dalam metodologi kuantitatif kuasi-eksperimental. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada semester genap tahun ajaran 2025–2026 di SMA Negeri 1 Gebang, Kabupaten Langkat. Seluruh siswa Kelas XI IPA di SMA Negeri 1 Gebang merupakan populasi penelitian. Kelas XI MIPA 1 (n=11) adalah kelompok kontrol yang menerima pembelajaran tradisional, sedangkan Kelas XI MIPA 2 (n=22) adalah kelompok eksperimen yang menerima pembelajaran STAD dibantu oleh Kahoot dan LKPD. Tes pilihan ganda yang telah divalidasi digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data, dan uji Mann-Whitney U serta N-Gain digunakan untuk analisis. Skor rata-rata posttest kelas eksperimen (88,36) secara signifikan lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelas kontrol (66,45), menurut temuan tersebut. N-Gain kelas eksperimen adalah 0,80 (kategori tinggi) sedangkan kelas kontrol 0,42 (kategori sedang), dan uji Mann-Whitney U menghasilkan p=0,0068 < 0,05 dengan ukuran efek r=0,43 (sedang-besar). Dengan demikian, hasil belajar kimia siswa pada materi pengelompokan hidrokarbon sangat ditingkatkan oleh model STAD dengan penggunaan Kahoot dan LKPD.
