Abstract

Currently, the effort to invent ideal natural male contraceptives still faces many obstacles, especially due to the fact that ideal contraceptives should meet certain requirements such as: be able to cause total azoospermia; easily used; cause no untoward or toxic effects; not disturbing libido or sexual behavior; and be reversible. As male contraceptives are very limited in types, efforts to develop ideal male contraceptive drugs is crucial; particularly the effort to find alternative effective substances derived from natural resources. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether of young papaya seeds extract has a to inhibit the testosterone. The study used 30 male mice strain Balb-C which were allocated by simple random sampling into two groups: Control Group (P0) consisted of 17 male mice and Treatment Group 1 (P1) consisted of 17 male mice. After 36 days of treatment, control group and treatment group were taken for their blood. The blood was taken for testosterone hormone test using Radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique and the scrotum was taken for obtaining the Leydig cells. The result of t-test analysis showed that the level of testosterone in control group was 104,27 ± 25,79 ng/dl and Leydig cells 129,41±30,92, in treatment group 91,76 ± 30,45 ng/dl and Leydig cells 122,94±20,85.  The difference between control group and treatment group was the decrease of testosterone and Leydig cells. Young papaya seeds extract reduces testosterone and Leydig cells insignificantly. Keywords: Papaya seeds extract, Testosterone hormone, Leydig cel, Male Mice balb/C

Abstract

To date, COVID-19 infection still become an important health problem in Indonesia, including Bali. We may concern about this situation since there has been no specific drug or vaccine available against COVID-19 infection. In this new normal era, we should maintain our immunity to prevent the infection. Some herbs potentially possess great effect on maintaining immunity to protect ourselves from COVID-19 infection, such as kunyit, temulawak, jahe, kencur, pegagan and kelor. To date, herbs utilization for health in Banjar Sambahan remains very limited. This is related to the limited skill in processing herbal drink (jamu). This activity aimed to raise participant (PKK women at Banjar Sambahan) knowledge, as well as skills, on producing herbal drinks (jamu/loloh) that potentially increase the immunity during COVID-19 pandemic era. This programme was performed by socialization about herbs utilization for health (especially for immunity), accompanied by training (by video) on producing herbal drink and survey for herbal medicine utilization in community. The results of this programme were video, publication on national journal (SINTA indexed) and presentation on national scientific meeting. It can be concluded that this activity supply knowledge and skill for PKK women at Banjar Sambahan in processing herbal drink for maintaining the immunity against COVID-19 infection. Double-click Select to translate After turning 40 years old, testosterone hormone in men will decrease, but some data regarding the effect of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) on cardiovascular safety is still controversial. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the effect of TRT on lipid profile and body fat in men with Late-Onset Hypogonadism (LOH) which affects the incidence of cardiovascular disease. The literature search was performed on the database, such as PubMed and Wiley Online Library and also additional manual searches were performed on the reference list of related studies. The identified articles were selected according to the eligibility criteria. A total of four articles were used in this systematic review and the quality of the study was assessed using the Jadad score. From the four studies that is used, four study discussed the effect of TRT on lipid profiles and two studies discussed the effect of TRT on body fat. On the administration of testosterone gel 50mg/day, all lipid profiles improved after nine months of intervention. However, with IM testosterone after one year, the improvement was only partial. All studies discussing the effect of TRT on body fat showed uniform results, namely a decrease in fat percentage. The results obtained by the studies included in this systematic review suggest that TRT can improve lipid profiles and also decrease body fat in men with LOH.
