Abstract

Traditional grammar teaching focuses mainly on teaching grammar rules directly from textbooks and in return, requiring students to complete a number of activities to demonstrate their understanding and application of such rules. In order to motivate students to be able to express themselves in certain communicative situations, it is also necessary to not only master language rules but also to know the culture of target language. Literary texts are considered effective as authentic materials which can be integrated into foreign language class activities. This article is a literature review that briefly explores the use of literary texts in teaching English grammar. It also shows the practical demonstration of the use of literary texts in grammar class. It is recommended that multiple class activities are designed to incorporate the use of literary texts specifically to improve students’ grammar.

The types of discrimination found namely direct and indirect discrimination. Direct discrimination is a type of discrimination committed by someone against another person in direct action, such as bullying, and making a person is rejected in society. On the other hand, indirect discrimination is discrimination that takes the form of a policy or attitude, which has an indirect effect on someone but also does not get equality in society. Abstract

The implementation of Computational Thinking (CT) in language instruction has drawn interest due to its potential in improving students' analytical and problem-solving abilities. However, its uses in specific fields, such Maritime English especially in reading comprehension, is still not well established. This study is a qualitative study that aims to explore how students perceive the use of CT in Maritime English reading instruction. 31 Students from a maritime higher education institution participated in semi-structured interviews. The result indicates that students view CT as a useful technique for enhancing reading comprehension and engagement. Moreover, the perception is divided into abstraction, algorithm, decomposition, evaluation and pattern recognition. In terms of abstraction, students claim that they can ignore irrelevant information and pick relevant information. In terms of algorithm, students believe that they can apply strategies in reading to make a better comprehension such as underline keywords. In terms of decomposition, students feel confident in breaking down long and complex sentences to find the meaning. In terms of evaluation, students can evaluate the information in the text. In terms of pattern recognition, students are aware of common pattern/sentence structure and organization in the text. The study emphasizes the value of contextualized CT education and offers suggestions for integrating CT into Maritime English learning reading instruction. The finding of this study offers potential instructional strategies for maritime education.

The fulfillment is done by finding out the forms of ideal self and real self of the two characters. The theory applied in this study is self-actualization by Carl Rogers. Words in the forms of narrations and dialogues relating to the discussion of self-actualization of the two selected characters were the data in this study. The research design of this study was qualitative with humanistic approach. The results revealed that the two characters successfully fulfilled their self-actualization. However, Agatha’s process was less problematic compared to Sophie’s due to the different environment they lived in. Agatha’s character lived in a positive and supportive environment that allowed her to believe in herself. On the other hand, Sophie’s character lived in a negative and toxic environment where everyone doubted her efforts in becoming a fully functioning person. These results were found through the characterizations of discursive and dramatic methods

Abstract

The primary objective of this community service program is to cultivate English writing skill among high school students and those living in the tourist village of Masdarling in Bontang, East Kalimantan. By connecting culture with writing experiences, the intention is to reinforce cultural identity and uphold the values of local wisdom and indigenous culture among the younger generation, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the dominance of global culture. The implementation of this community service project involves a series of stages, which include identifying the problem, planning the activity, implementing the activity, conducting evaluation and monitoring, and reporting on the activity. The culture-oriented writing outputs produced by high school students in East Kalimantan exhibit various challenges, such as a limited range of ideas, the use of complex vocabulary and grammar, and ineffective sentence construction. The findings from the community service initiatives demonstrate an increasing awareness of the significance of training for skill development. This English writing training is projected to function as a platform for local communities to enhance their ability to showcase local traditions and culture to a worldwide audience, ultimately drawing the interest of international tourists.

Abstract

Folklore, serving as a cultural manifestation within Indonesian society, encompasses esteemed principles of local wisdom whose existence needs to be maintained and preserved. While maintaining the essence of the original narrative, folklore that develops in the community generally has multiple versions. The presence of multiple speakers contributes to the narrative's delivery. A team of lecturers and student from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences conducted Community Service (PKM) activity to collect folklore data. This was accomplished through conducting interviews with two individuals who are members of community institutions in the Bontang Kuala area. Numerous titles of folklore compiled based on the narrative of the speakers are Beras Basah, Tanjung Mamat/Hantu Tausan, Nek Gembong, Lok-Lope, Mak Bondan, Ikan Barakuda, Datuk Seman dan Kangkung, as well as Sungai Belanda. The values of local wisdom that can be learnt from these narratives are the consistent practice of generosity, the cultivation of honesty in both speech and conduct, the conscientious pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, and the preservation of the natural environment.
