The research design of this study was qualitative content analysis. The data of this study were taken from Elysium film in the form of dialogues related to the portrayal of power and authority. This study finds out that the portrayal of power and authority is divided based on the plot order of Elysium film: rising actions, climax, and resolution. Power is portrayed through the representative of Earth citizens who decide to work together. Meanwhile, authority is portrayed through the representative of Elysium citizens who decide to kill each other in taking control of Elysium. This study concludes that the representatives of power stand as the winner of the conflict by eradicating the discrimination policy of the previous Elysium that is controlled by authority and building the new Elysium without discrimination against the Earth citizens. Keywords: plot, power, authority, film

Abstract

Learning style is one of the factors contributing to students’ success on second or foreign language learning. This present research attempted to identify various learning styles used in learning English by administering Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire ( PLSPQ ) for 121 EFL students at English literature study program. The result of descriptive analysis showed that the overall students’ preferred learning style was found to be auditory (M= 37.5, SD = 4.48). Based on gender differences, a majority of male students were auditory students ( M = 38.6, SD = 4.27)  and most of the female students were observed to have tendency to be in the category of kinaesthetic students (M = 3.69, SD = .49). The individual learning style became the least frequent style used by the students ( M = 35.2, SD = 7.53). The findings contribute to the improvement of teaching practice quality. Educators are recommended to employ various teaching styles and design variety of activities that enable students to activate their own learning styles more effectively. Keywords: learning style, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire ( PLSPQ )

Abstract

In a world where not all desires can be fulfilled, Ariel attempts to overcome those limitations in any way she can. The Little Mermaid (2023) tells the story of a young mermaid who dreams of living in the human world. Her desire for acceptance and curiosity about life on land drive her to defy the norms and rules of the underwater kingdom. Through the narrative of this story, this study aims to analyze Ariel’s fulfillment of needs based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, ranging from physiological needs to self-actualization. Additionally, the study explores the application of this theory in examining character development in literary works. This research uses qualitative content analysis to investigate Ariel’s psychological experiences and her character development. Characterization theory and plot structure are utilized to trace Ariel’s character transformation and reveal how each stage of need manifests throughout the storyline. The results indicate that Ariel successfully fulfills all five levels of needs, with the need for love and belonging emerging as the most dominant driving force behind her decisions and transformation. Her strong attachment to the human world and longing for acceptance lead her to take significant risks, which allow her to fulfill her needs progressively, from the most fundamental to the highest level of self-actualization.

Abstract

This study looks at how Greimas' actantial model, ecocriticism, and interpretive research come together to analyze indigenous stories from Southeast Asia in the context of the Anthropocene. While previous applications of the actantial model have focused on heroism, obedience, and resistance in Indonesian folklore, they have not engaged directly with ecocritical perspectives. This research seeks to bridge this gap using interpretive research guided by Ricoeur's hermeneutics. This study explores how indigenous myths construct non-human agency, positioning nature as an active participant rather than a submissive site. The actantial model is applied to narratives such as The Origin of Paddy, The Myth of Batoq Ayau, and The Legend of Hudoq Kawit, and an academic article, Circular Commoning of Dayak Bahau, revealing how actants shape environmental discourse. Additionally, this study reinterprets transitivity, expanding its scope beyond conventional constraints to position environmental actants as central figures in narrative structures. Findings indicate that integrating Greimas' narratology with ecocriticism increases one's knowledge about human-environment interdependency, offering a fresh ecocritical perspective that challenges anthropocentric ideologies. By reframing narratives to reflect mutuality between human and non-human entities, this study contributes to sustainable ecological stewardship, reinforcing the ethical responsibility essential for environmental resilience in the Anthropocene.

Abstract

This study intended to examine the stages of moral development that occurred in R.J. Palacio’s Wonder novel as well as how the characters in Wonder novel develop their personality along with the moral development throughout the story. In conducting this research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method and moral development theory which was invented by Lawrence Kohlberg. In analyzing this study, the researcher used Wonder novel written by R.J. Palacio as the data source. Meanwhile, the data is presented in the form of words, clauses, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs related to the moral development theory as well as how the personality of the characters develop throughout the story. The results revealed that the way the characters developed their personality to the stages of moral development is based on the relationship between the characters’ comprehension of matters related to morals in line with how they respond to the matters. It was also found that the characters’ moral development relied on their understanding about moral itself and then following their conscience to make choices in their life.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the formation of homosexual identity in an individual, the types of victimization and abuse towards queer people, as well as the effects of victimization. The researcher used Foucault’s queer theory as a main theory for this study. The data used in this research were paragraphs, sentences, dialogues and narrations. The novel entitled More Happy Than Not, which was written by Adam Silvera in 2015, was used as the source of data for this research. The results from this study showed that the character Aaron Soto went through a rather difficult progress of homosexual identity formation, which he went back and forth between identity confusion and identity assumption phases. Aaron experienced several kinds of victimization, which include physical abuse, verbal abuse, and victimization in family settings. The abuse caused Aaron to experience physical injury, self blame, as well as feelings of internalized homophobia. The homosexual identity formation, victimization and the effects of victimization are related in a sense that they work like a cycle, and the three of them worked as a cause and effect.
