Abstract

This research aims to describe the class struggle as the response of five variants alienation namely powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation and self-estrangement in The Greatest Showman film. This research also aims to reveal how the alienated characters did the class struggle because of the bad treatment and the unfair action they got then attempted to change their life condition and defend themselves. The data in this qualitative research are words, phrases, and sentences based on dialogues, narrations and monologues that indicated the alienation and class struggle in the film. The findings of this research showed that Barnum as the main character experienced alienation in the form of powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness and self-estrangement. Meanwhile, the other characters such as Barnum’s family and the circus members experienced powerlessness, meaninglessness and isolation. The characters of this film also did class struggle by two aspects which are economic and political. From the economic, the alienated people try to improve their living conditions to have a better life and more decent. From the political, the alienated people also struggle against the oppressor and defend their rights by fighting back the people who alienated them.

Abstract

The first purpose of this study was to determine the type of anxiety experienced by Joy in the Room movie (2015). Besides, this study also aimed to determine the type of defense mechanism Joy Newsome used to overcome her anxiety. This study was qualitative research because it focused on analyzing the psychological aspect of a character in a movie. Accordingly, the approach used here was the psychological approach. In this study, the researcher used Freud's theory about anxiety and defense mechanisms. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Joy Newsome experienced moral anxiety and realistic anxiety. To overcome her anxiety, Joy used several types of defense mechanisms. Those defense mechanisms are repression, reaction formation, denial, displacement, regression projection and fantasy.

Abstract

Collaborative learning is an activity to work in small groups or teams that allows students to develop mutual cooperation in learning. This study aims to highlight the effectiveness of collaborative learning in improving student academic achievement. It was carried out with a quantitative method and the pretest-posttest experimental design was applied. There were sixty students participated in this study. To assess students’ achievement, online grammar pretest and posttest were distributed. In addition, collaborative learning questionnaire was administered to elicit students’ responses towards collaborative learning. Based on paired-samples t test result, it was found that the pretest and posttest mean scores were significantly different (t(59) = -5.977, p < .05).  This indicated that there was a higher mean score of posttest after the implementation of collaborative activities. Most students responded that collaborative learning activities improved academic performance and team work helped them to receive input from their peers as well as provide better result in completing the tasks than working individually.  It is recommended that various collaborative activities should be designed to motivate university students in learning grammar.

Abstract

This research deals with prejudice in the Detroit film by Kathryn Bigelow. Prejudice is the negative assessment or hostility toward an individual or group resulting in negative treatment. There are so many negative treatments from the prejudice portrayed in the Detroit film. In this research, the researcher analysed the prejudice aspects through the characterization of the characters experiencing negative treatments in the Detroit film. This research was conducted by using a qualitative research design. The data were generated from the speech, thoughts, effect, action, and looks of the characters portrayed in the film. The researcher revealed that the negative treatments in Detroit are committed by the white people police officers and experienced by the black people citizens. In conclusion, four negative treatments experienced by the characters were anti-locution, discrimination, physical attack, and extermination. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the difference between both races such as their skin tone, or the types of their hair is what generated prejudice in Detroit film.  Keywords: prejudice, black people, Detroit

Abstract

   ABSTRACTMaslow's hierarchy of needs theory is one of the psychological theories that are useful for triggering the emergence of motivation in individuals to meet daily needs. This hierarchy shows that everyone has the motivation to fulfill their needs. In this case, this research aims to find and explain the hierarchy of needs of Robin's character in Christopher Robin film using Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. In addition, this research used a qualitative method to fulfill the research objectives. The results of the research showed that there are five hierarchies of needs presented by Robin's character. First, the phychological need was indicated by the need for sleep. Second, the safety need was indicated by the freedom to fear. Third, the belonging and love need was indicated by the need to feel love. Fourth, the esteem need was indicated by the achievement and independence of Robin's character. The last is self-actualization need was indicated by the morality possessed by Robin's character. The Hierarchy's needs were depicted through the actions and speech of Robin's character.Keywords: Hierarchy of needs, Psychological, and Christopher Robin film.ABSTRAKTeorihirarki kebutuhan Maslow merupakan salah satu teori psikologi yang berguna untuk memicu munculnya motivasi dalam diri individu untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Hirarki ini menunjukkan bahwa setiap orang memiliki motivasi untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya. Dalam hal ini, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan dan menjelaskan kebutuhan Hirarki dari karakter Robin dalam Film Christopher Robin dengan menggunakan teori kebutuhan Hirarki dari Abraham Maslow. Sebagai tambahan, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk memenuhi tujuan penelitian. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada lima kebutuhan hirarki yang dihadirkan oleh karakter Robin. Pertama yaitu kebutuhan pisikologi ditunjukkan dengan kebutuhan tidur. Kedua yaitu kebutuhan rasa aman ditunjukkan oleh kebebasan untuk takut. Ketiga yaitu kebutuhan kepemilikan dan cinta ditunjukkan dengan kebutuhan untuk merasakan cinta. Keempat yaitu kebutuhan harga diri ditunjukkan dengan pencapaian dan kemandirian dari karakter Robin. Yang terakhir adalah kebutuhan aktualisasi diri ditunjukkan oleh moralitas yang dimiliki oleh karakter Robin. Kebutuhan-kebutuhan Hirarki tersebut digambarkan melalui tindakan dan ucapan dari karakter Robin.Kata-kata kunci: Kebutuhan Hirarki, Psikologi, dan Film Christopher Robin.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the formation of homosexual identity in an individual, the types of victimization and abuse towards queer people, as well as the effects of victimization. The researcher used Foucault’s queer theory as a main theory for this study. The data used in this research were paragraphs, sentences, dialogues and narrations. The novel entitled More Happy Than Not, which was written by Adam Silvera in 2015, was used as the source of data for this research. The results from this study showed that the character Aaron Soto went through a rather difficult progress of homosexual identity formation, which he went back and forth between identity confusion and identity assumption phases. Aaron experienced several kinds of victimization, which include physical abuse, verbal abuse, and victimization in family settings. The abuse caused Aaron to experience physical injury, self blame, as well as feelings of internalized homophobia. The homosexual identity formation, victimization and the effects of victimization are related in a sense that they work like a cycle, and the three of them worked as a cause and effect.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aimed to find the types of stuttering and the types of associated behaviors in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood film. The chosen character to be analyzed is Rick Dalton. This research used Hedge and Davis’ theory of the types of stuttering and Zebrowski’s theory of the types of associated behaviors concluded in psycholinguistics field. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data sources of this research are Once Upon a Time in Hollywood film and its script. The data were taken from the words and sentences uttered by Dalton in the film which showed the stuttering phenomenon, as well as certain gestures that accompanied Dalton’s stuttering. Through the findings of the analysis, the researcher found two out of four types of stuttering, namely repetition (part-word repetition, whole-word repetition, and phrase repetition) and block (sound prolongation). Also, all types of associated behaviors were found, they are: (1) head, torso, and limb movement, (2) audible inhalations and exhalations, (3) visible muscle tension in orofacial tension, and (4) eye behaviors. Through this research, the readers can have more understanding and raise their awareness of stuttering phenomenon that also happen in real life which can affect someone’s life who suffered from stuttering.Keywords: Psycholinguistics, Speech Disorders, Stuttering, Associated Behaviors, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Film ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis gagap dan jenis perilaku terkait dalam film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Karakter yang dipilih untuk dianalisis adalah Rick Dalton. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori jenis gagap milik Hedge dan Davis dan teori jenis perilaku terkait milik Zebrowski yang tercakup dalam lingkup psikolinguistik. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood dan naskahnya. Data diambil dari kata-kata dan kalimat yang diucapkan oleh Dalton dalam film yang menunjukkan kegagapan, juga gestur tertentu yang menyertai kegagapan Dalton. Melalui temuan dari analisis, peneliti menemukan dua dari empat jenis gagap, yaitu pengulangan (pengulangan sebagian kata, pengulangan seluruh kata, dan pengulangan frasa) dan blok (jeda sesaat). Pun, semua jenis perilaku terkait ditemukan, yaitu: (1) pergerakan kepala, badan, dan lengan, (2) penghirupan dan penghembusan napas yang terdengar, (3) ketegangan otot pada otot orofasial, dan (4) pergerakan mata. Dari penelitian ini, pembaca bisa lebih memahami dan meningkatkan kesadaran mereka terhadap fenomena gagap yang juga terjadi di kehidupan nyata, yang dapat mempengaruhi kehidupan seseorang yang menderita kegagapan.Kata Kunci: Psikolinguistik, Gangguan Berbicara, Gagap, Perilaku Terkait, Film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Abstract

This research discusses about the portrayal of liberal feminism experienced by the main character in the Jane Eyre novel. In conducting this research, the researcher used the theory of liberal feminism and the theory of characterization by Reaske. The researcher used qualitative research as the method and mimetic as the approach of this research. The findings of this research showed that there are two aspects of liberal feminism that are portrayed in the novel; namely equal education and equal liberty. Those aspects are portrayed through Jane Eyre’s character when she struggled to get her freedom by being intelligent and progressive to get well education, and being independent and courageous to get her freedom.

Abstract

This study discusses the portrayal of power and authority based on the order of plot in Elysium film. There are two theories used in this study: Dahrendorf’s power and authority and Reaske’s plot. The research design of this study was qualitative content analysis. The data of this study were taken from Elysium film in the form of dialogues related to the portrayal of power and authority. This study finds out that the portrayal of power and authority is divided based on the plot order of Elysium film: rising actions, climax, and resolution. Power is portrayed through the representative of Earth citizens who decide to work together. Meanwhile, authority is portrayed through the representative of Elysium citizens who decide to kill each other in taking control of Elysium. This study concludes that the representatives of power stand as the winner of the conflict by eradicating the discrimination policy of the previous Elysium that is controlled by authority and building the new Elysium without discrimination against the Earth citizens.Keywords: plot, power, authority, film

Abstract

The Second World War is a big event that happened in the past which involved almost all countries in the world and was recorded in the history of human life. The Nightingale is a novel set in the Second World War in France, written by Kristin Hannah. This research aims to find out and explain about historical events of the Second World War in France portrayed in The Nightingale novel using historicism. It is an approach that relates to the historical contexts themselves in understanding the history that exists in a literary work. In addition, this research also used a qualitative method was employed to fulfill the objectives of this research. The results showed that The Nightingale novel portrayed the historical events of the Second World War in France. Those descriptions of historical events were the Fall of France, Vichy in the persecution of the Jews, French resistance, and the liberation of France. In this case, the descriptions of these historical events were mostly portrayed in narration by Kristin Hannah.
