Abstract

This research aims to describe the class struggle as the response of five variants alienation namely powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation and self-estrangement in The Greatest Showman film. This research also aims to reveal how the alienated characters did the class struggle because of the bad treatment and the unfair action they got then attempted to change their life condition and defend themselves. The data in this qualitative research are words, phrases, and sentences based on dialogues, narrations and monologues that indicated the alienation and class struggle in the film. The findings of this research showed that Barnum as the main character experienced alienation in the form of powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness and self-estrangement. Meanwhile, the other characters such as Barnum’s family and the circus members experienced powerlessness, meaninglessness and isolation. The characters of this film also did class struggle by two aspects which are economic and political. From the economic, the alienated people try to improve their living conditions to have a better life and more decent. From the political, the alienated people also struggle against the oppressor and defend their rights by fighting back the people who alienated them.

Abstract

Prejudice is a thought or assumption that is not necessarily true of a person or group based on their membership background. There are some hostile actions in prejudice, namely: (1) Antilocution, (2) Avoidance, (3) Discrimination, (4) Physical Attack, and (5) Extermination. With Allport's theory of prejudice, the researcher analyzes a film called 12 Years a Slave. The film is analyzed more deeply to find subtitles and scene pieces that contain elements of hostile actions in prejudice. To get the elements of prejudice in the film, the writer uses character theory and characterization to find elements of prejudice that occur in the characters in the film.  This study used a qualitative method because it requires a deep understanding of a phenomenon that occurs.  In the results of this study, the researcher found that there are four types of acts of prejudice, namely: (1) Antilocution, (2) Discrimination, (3) Physical Attack, and (4) Extermination. The most frequently used act of prejudice in this film is a physical attack. Based on the research in this study, the physical attacks in the film occurred because of the lack of self-control of white people over African Americans. More deeply, another reason is because of the mode of justification for the violence that white people against African Americans through the Bible. Lastly, because of the legalization of the sale and purchase of slaves, there was a sense of ownership that allowed white people to do anything to their slaves.

Abstract

This study aims to find women’s language features used by Elsa and Anna in Frozen II movie using Lakoff’s theory. This research used the qualitative method. The data were generated from the movie and movie scripts in the form of utterances and conversations expressed by Elsa and Anna. The researcher generated the data from the movie and movie script in the utterances and conversation. The result of the study showed that there were 35 data that contained women’s language features in the movie. There were nine types of women’s language features found in the movie. The women’s language features were found in the movie are Lexical hedges or filler, tag question, rising intonation, and empty adjective, intensifier, hypercorrect, superpolite, avoidance of strong words, and emphatic stress. In this movie, lexical hedges or fillers are the dominant women’s language features were found in this research.

Abstract

Prejudice is a negative assumption towards others which is not certain to be right or wrong yet. One of the problems of prejudice that still exists in the modern era is prejudice against African Americans. This research aimed to reveal the kinds of prejudice experienced by African-Americans and the responses of African-American characters as the victims of prejudice. To conduct this research, the researcher used qualitative methodology. The data in this research were taken in the form of narrations and dialogues in Small Great Things (2016) novel written by Jodi Picoult which related to the negative actions of prejudice experienced by African-American characters and their responses to the prejudices that suitable with prejudice theory by Gordon Allport and the response to prejudice theory by Simpson and Yinger. The results showed that African-American characters in Small Great Things novel experience four kinds of prejudice, namely: antilocution, avoidance, discrimination and physical attack. Furthermore, the result also showed how African-American characters responded to the prejudices that they experienced, namely: aggression, acceptance and reformism. Therefore, the researcher concluded that prejudice based on individual beliefs can make someone behave negatively toward others and sometimes it can be manifested through hostile actions.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Conflict between siblings is a common phenomenon which happens in many families, that not many people care about. It is also reflected in literary works. The study discussed the jealousy, resentment, conflict, and the causes that happen between siblings in a novel entitled I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. To answer the proposed questions of the portrayal and the causes of sibling rivalry, the researcher used psychological perspective. The study aims to find out the aspects and causes of sibling rivalry in Jandy Nelson’s I’ll Give You the Sun, especially in Jude and Noah Sweetwine’s characters. A qualitative research approach was employed to fulfill the objectives of this research. The data were collected through reading and understanding the aspects and the causes of sibling rivalry that occur in the story. The findings revealed that sibling rivalry appears in the story, where the two main characters, Jude and Noah Sweetwine experience conflicts, jealous toward each other, and resent the sibling and the parents. The causes are children have a talented sibling, parents favor a child, children depend on the parents’ attention and affection, and children reject their sibling.Keywords: Psychological, Sibling Rivalry, Jandy Nelson, “I’ll Give You the Sun” ABSTRAK Konflik antara saudara adalah phenomena yang biasa terjadi dalam suatu keluarga, yang tidak banyak orang peduli akan hal tersebut. Sibling rivalry juga digambarkan di karya sastra. Penelitian ini membahas kecemburuan, kemarahan, konflik, dan penyebab-penyebabnya yang terjadi antara saudara dalam novel yang berjudul  I’ll Give You the Sun oleh Jandy Nelson. Untuk menjawab masalah-masalah dari pelukisan dan penyebab-penyebab dari sibling rivalry yang telah diusulkan, peneliti menggunakan pandangan dari sudut psikolog. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu aspek-aspek dan penyebab-penyebab dari sibling rivalry pada novel Jandy Nelson yang berjudul I’ll Give You the Sun, terutama pada karakter Jude dan Noah Sweetwine. Penelitian kualitatif digunakan untuk memenuhi tujuan-tujan dari penelitian ini. Data-data dikumpulkan melalui membaca dan memahami aspek-aspek dan penyebab-penyebab dari sibling rivalry yang terdapat dalam cerita. Dari data-data yang ada, telah ditemukan bahwa sibling rivalry muncul di dalam cerita, dimana dua tokoh utama, Jude dan Noah Sweetwine mengalami konflik, cemburu terhadap satu sama lain, dan membenci saudaranya dan orang tuanya. Penyebab-penyebabnya adalah anak mempunyai saudara yang berbakat, orang tua yang meng-anak emas-kan salah satu anak, anak bergantung pada perhatian dan kasih sayang dari orang tua, dan anak yang menolak kehadiran saudaranya.Kata kunci: Psikolog, Sibling Rivalry, Jandy Nelson, “I’ll Give You the Sun”

Abstract

The Second World War is a big event that happened in the past which involved almost all countries in the world and was recorded in the history of human life. The Nightingale is a novel set in the Second World War in France, written by Kristin Hannah. This research aims to find out and explain about historical events of the Second World War in France portrayed in The Nightingale novel using historicism. It is an approach that relates to the historical contexts themselves in understanding the history that exists in a literary work. In addition, this research also used a qualitative method was employed to fulfill the objectives of this research. The results showed that The Nightingale novel portrayed the historical events of the Second World War in France. Those descriptions of historical events were the Fall of France, Vichy in the persecution of the Jews, French resistance, and the liberation of France. In this case, the descriptions of these historical events were mostly portrayed in narration by Kristin Hannah.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the features of sign language used by Eliza in The Shape of Water film. The researchers analyzed the use of sign language used by a mute adult woman named Elisa based on the film The Shape of Water. This study focuses on the features of sign language used by Elisa to communicate with people in the film. The approach used in this research is the qualitative approach and content analysis design. In conducting this research, the main theory is Sign Language features by Gallaudet. This study found several sign language features used by Elisa to help her communicate, such as hand shape, palm orientation, placement, non-manual features, and hand movement. This research will make people get more understand sign language and how to use sign language, moreover this research could bring awareness to communicating with deaf and mute people.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focused on analyzing  flouting of maxim that was performed by characters and the reasons for characters flouting maxims in The Help movie. This study used a qualitative content analysis. The data source was from The Help movie’s script. The data were in the form of dialogues and utterances among characters that contained of flouting maxims. Through the analysis process, the researcher found 32 data containing of all flouting of maxim types: flouting of maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting of maxim of relevance, and flouting of maxim of manner. In addition, the characters flouted the maxims due to several reasons such as competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Maxim of quality became the most frequent flouted type and mostly came together with conflictive through making sarcastic utterances. The characters gave sarcastic utterances because the interlocutors kept talking about the speaker’s dislike topic, such as getting marriage and downgrading the job.Key words: Cooperative Principle, Conversational Maxims, Flouting of Maxims ABSTRAKFokus penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa jenis penyimpangan maksim yang dilakukan oleh karatkter dan alasan mengapa mereka menyimpang maksim di film The Help. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian analisis kualitatif pada konten. Sumber data adalah dari naskah film The Help dan data dalam bentuk dialog dan ujaran antara karakter yang berisi penyimpangan terhadap maksim. Setelah menganalisa data, peneliti menemukan 32 data yang menunjukkan semua jenis maksim telah disimpangkan di film The Help, yaitu maksim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Selain itu, karakter menyimpang maksim karna beberapa alasan, yaitu kompetitif, konvivial, kolaboratif, dan konfliktif. Maksim kualitas menjadi tipe yang paling sering disimpang dan hampir semua menggunakan konfliktif sebagai alasan dengan membuat ujaran sarkastik. Ujaran sarkastik dibuat untuk menyinggung lawan bicara karena mereka terus membahas topik yang tidak disukai oleh penutur, seperti menyuruh untuk cepat menikah dan merendahkan pekerjaan.Kata kunci: Prinsip kooperatif, maksim konvensional, pinyampangan maksim.

Abstract

The first purpose of this study was to determine the type of anxiety experienced by Joy in the Room movie (2015). Besides, this study also aimed to determine the type of defense mechanism Joy Newsome used to overcome her anxiety. This study was qualitative research because it focused on analyzing the psychological aspect of a character in a movie. Accordingly, the approach used here was the psychological approach. In this study, the researcher used Freud's theory about anxiety and defense mechanisms. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Joy Newsome experienced moral anxiety and realistic anxiety. To overcome her anxiety, Joy used several types of defense mechanisms. Those defense mechanisms are repression, reaction formation, denial, displacement, regression projection and fantasy.

Abstract

People have different dream in their life. To fulfill the dream, they need motivation because it makes people stronger to achieve their dream. The researcher identified the motivation hierarchy of human needs of the main character in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film using Maslow’s theory. Abraham’s character is basically motivated by his revenge to fulfill his human needs. This study discussed about the human needs of Abraham Lincoln as the main character in the film. This study was a descriptive qualitative study. The primary data were presented in the form of dialogues throughout the movie related to human needs of Abraham’s character in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film. The secondary data were supported by the previous studies, journals, theories and books. The data source was taken from the script, and dialogue of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film. The result of this study showed that the researcher finds that Abraham’s character in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film fulfilled all of five stages of the hierarchy of human needs by Abraham Maslow such as physiological needs, the belongingness, esteem needs, safety needs. But he struggles to fulfil his self-actualization needs because to achieved his dream, he needs to do some works such as hunting the vampires.
