In addition, collaborative learning questionnaire was administered to elicit students’ responses towards collaborative learning. Based on paired-samples t test result, it was found that the pretest and posttest mean scores were significantly different (t(59) = -5.977, p < .05).  This indicated that there was a higher mean score of posttest after the implementation of collaborative activities. Most students responded that collaborative learning activities improved academic performance and team work helped them to receive input from their peers as well as provide better result in completing the tasks than working individually.  It is recommended that various collaborative activities should be designed to motivate university students in learning grammar.

Abstract

Successful foreign or second language instruction involves individual learning differences as important variables observed among students. Out of many variables, learning strategies and anxiety are highlighted to be major concerns influencing grammar achievement. This paper sought to examine whether learning strategies and anxiety reported by EFL students influencing grammar scores. Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaires were administered to fifty-nine student samples. Path analysis was used to map the relationship model of the variables in this study. The statistical analysis revealed that the influence of learning strategies and anxiety on grammar score was 0.063 or 6.3%. This implied that 93.7% of students’ grammar score was influenced by other variables. The statistical analysis also showed that there was a negative correlation between learning strategies and grammar scores (r = -200, p<.05). Similarly, a negative correlation was also seen in anxiety and grammar score (r = -146, p<.05). The findings contribute to improve the quality of teaching grammar and provide recommendation for future studies in the area of teaching and learning grammar in the EFL context.

Abstract

This article analyzes the COVID-19 topic discussed at the 2020 USA final presidential debate. The purpose of this research is to describe the effect of the discourses on the socio-cultural practices. The approach employed in this research is the three-dimensional critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough consisting of text analysis, discursive practice analysis, and socio-cultural practice analysis of the discourses. The discourses of the COVID-19 topic are seen as important by the American citizens because they need clarity of how their future president would fight the pandemic in their term. The result of this research shows that the two discourses by the presidential candidates produced distinctive depictions of COVID-19. Discourse produced by Donald Trump offered a more optimistic view regarding the COVID-19 situation in the United States, while Joe Biden’s discourse gave a more pessimistic view towards the COVID-19 situation. The presidential candidates provided different views of the COVID-19 situation in the United States in order to appeal and convince the American citizens into voting them. The different depictions of COVID-19 situation in the United States resulted in the American citizens expressing their disappointment over Donald Trump’s optimism which also extend to the criticism towards the White House, while praised Joe Biden’s pessimism on the topic. Ultimately, the discourses are seen as unsatisfactory by the American citizens due to their inability to give details and elaborations on the plan to fight against COVID-19 in the next four years. Lastly, these discourses might create and instil indecisiveness in the American citizens’ voting decision.
