Abstract

The Sungkai plant (Peronema canescens Jack.) is known for its various health benefits, particularly as a natural immunostimulant. In West Sumatra, this plant is abundant and widely used in traditional medicine. This activity aimed to provide education and a demonstration to the community on how to process Sungkai leaves into a healthy syrup, thereby increasing the use of this plant as a daily health drink. The event was conducted through a live demonstration in Kanagarian Sipinang, Palembayan District, Agam Regency. The process of making Sungkai syrup involved several stages, starting from selecting the leaves, boiling them, and mixing them with other ingredients such as sugar and/or lemon juice to enhance the flavor. The results of this activity showed high enthusiasm among participants, with a total of 40 attendees. Before the demonstration, data from questionnaires revealed that 80% of respondents had heard about Sungkai syrup. During the demonstration, most participants expressed great interest in the syrup-making process, particularly in the aspect of processing Sungkai leaves into an extract that can be used as a base for syrup. This demonstration successfully enhanced participants' knowledge and skills in utilizing Sungkai leaves as a healthy drink. With further education and support, Sungkai syrup has great potential to be developed as a flagship product that supports both public health.

Abstract

Zinc is an essential micronutrient in the human body as a cofactor of about 300 enzymes. Zinc is very instrumental in the growth process, including maintaining the thymus so that atrophy is not fast. Zinc deficiency can affect the immune system. Zinc deficiency can be caused due to a lack of zinc intake. In theory, many factors affect zinc intake, among others, community knowledge, education, economy, diet, habits, and customs. Lambung Bukit Village is a fostered village of Andalas University. Most people in this village are classified as economically deficient because the community generally farms. The level of public knowledge about zinc is still lacking. This service aims to increase public knowledge of the importance of zinc on body health and the provision of zinc supplements to prevent zinc deficiency and is expected to reduce morbidity and mortality due to infection in children. This activity has been carried out at Bustanul Ulum Elementary School in Batu Busuk Village, Lambung Bukit Village, Pauh District, Padang City. Counseling conducted to 48 people (parents of students and teachers). Almost all parents' knowledge is lacking about zinc, the role, source of zinc, and its relation to several diseases. We hope this counseling can increase public knowledge about the importance of zinc on the body, mainly to prevent susceptibility to infections and any food sources that contain zinc. The results of a health examination by pediatricians found two students suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), poor oral hygiene, and many teeth carious students. Giving zinc syrup to children aged 7-10 years is expected to prevent zinc deficiency in children.

Abstract

Abstract

The community service activity aimed to enhance public understanding and skills in utilizing ginger (Zingiber officinale) as a natural ingredient for functional food through the production of jelly candy. This initiative was motivated by the low level of public knowledge, as indicated by pre-test results showing limited understanding of the health benefits and processing techniques of ginger. The activity consisted of educational sessions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice on jelly candy production using natural ingredients, including ginger extract, sugar, jelly powder, vanilla, salt, and cinnamon. Evaluation through post-tests, interactive quizzes, and observation of practical sessions demonstrated a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and skills. Participants showed enthusiasm and were able to independently produce ginger-based jelly candy. This program not only increased public literacy on the use of herbal ingredients but also encouraged the development of small-scale functional snack enterprises. Future implementations are expected to expand to other communities with continuous mentoring to strengthen economic and health impacts.

Abstract

The utilization of Family Medicinal Plants (TOGA) is a strategic effort to enhance community health self-reliance, reduce dependence on synthetic drugs, and preserve local biodiversity. In Nagari Batu Tanjung, Talawi District, Sawahlunto City, the potential for TOGA is high due to favorable geography and extensive backyard land. However, its use remains limited because of low herbal literacy, minimal organic cultivation skills, and the absence of a properly managed communal garden. This community service program aimed to empower residents through education, direct practice, and guidance in cultivating and processing medicinal plants. Activities included awareness sessions on TOGA’s benefits, land preparation, planting of herbal seeds (ginger, turmeric, cardamom, sungkai, Java turmeric, aloe vera), and the establishment of a model TOGA garden. Based on pre- and post-test results from 40 participants, knowledge and cultivation skills improved significantly—from 40% to 95% of participants understanding proper TOGA cultivation. Active collaboration among residents, village officials, and students ensured the program’s success. Through Q&A sessions and hands-on practice, the community gained practical skills suited to local conditions. The established TOGA garden now serves as a learning medium, a health-supporting initiative, and a foundation for developing herbal products that promote sustainable economic empowerment.
