Abstract

This study aims to determine the mechanism of action, antibacterial activity, and effect of ethanol concentration of Chinese betel leaf extract (Peperomia pellucida) on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. The method used was disc diffusion with 96% ethanol solvent as well as determination of the number of test bacteria through the cup counting method, with the absorbance value adjusted to the McFarland standard of 0.5. The concentration of the extracts tested was 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. The data was analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test with the help of SPSS. The results showed that the ethanol extract of betel leaves of china had antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes, characterized by the formation of an inhibition zone. At 10% of the activity is moderate, while at the concentration of 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% of the activity is moderate. Standard conformity tests show that McFarland Kit's standard solution (Himedia) has an absorbance value of approximately 0.08–0.1 at a wavelength of 625 nm. The suspension of the test bacteria that was diluted to the absorbance value resulted in a number of Propionibacterium acnes cells of 1.2 × 10^7 CFU/mL. This shows that the number of test bacterial cells used is not entirely the same as McFarland's standard solution of 0.5. Thus, the ethanol extract of betel leaves has the potential to be an antibacterial agent against Propionibacterium acnes.

Abstract

This literature review aims to explore the spectrum of visual sensory disorders in humans, focusing on major disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, and anisometropia. This condition is one of the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness globally, especially in developing countries. The study synthesizes findings from recent national and international scientific publications to identify the causes of preventable and unpreventable visual dysfunction. Cataracts, often associated with aging and systemic diseases, remain the most common cause of blindness but can be treated through surgical interventions such as phacoemulsification. Glaucoma, known for its asymptomatic progression, causes irreversible damage to the optic nerve and requires early detection and ongoing treatment. Anisometropia, a refractive disorder that results in different visual inputs between the eyes, poses a risk of amblyopia if not treated early. In addition, the study highlights the increasing incidence of visual impairment due to excessive use of digital devices, especially among children, emphasizing the importance of precautions such as regulated screen time and regular eye check-ups. These findings emphasize the important role of early intervention, public awareness, and access to quality eye care in reducing the burden of visual impairment. The review also underscores the need for policy and research support to improve treatment strategies and maintain visual health in the digital age.

Abstract

Abstract

Central nervous system (CNS) injuries such as stroke are a leading cause of global disability (51 million DALYs), with a prevalence in Indonesia reaching 10.9% (GBD, 2019; Riskesdas, 2018). Neuroplasticity through BDNF-dependent synaptic plasticity mechanisms (Kowianski et al., 2018) and tDCS-mediated cortical reorganization (Lefaucheur et al., 2022) offers rehabilitation solutions, but their implementation faces challenges due to genetic variability (BDNF Val66Met) and technological access disparities (Siregar et al., 2023). This article aims to: Analyze BDNF-tDCS interactions at molecular and clinical levels.Evaluate the effectiveness of tDCS based on recent evidence (2019–2024).Formulate low-cost implementation strategies for Indonesia. The methodology involves a systematic PRISMA review of 45 studies from PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. The analysis includes:  Meta-analysis of tDCS effects on motor recovery (RevMan 5.4). Policy analysis using the WHO framework for essential health technologies. Key findings indicate: BDNF levels >35 ng/mL enhance motor recovery by 2.3x (95% CI: 1.8–3.1; p<0.001). tDCS significantly improves motor function (23.5%, p<0.01), but only in BDNF Val/Val genotypes.Implementation cost: Portable tDCS protocols (Rp500,000/unit) are 90% cheaper than TMS.Integration of BDNF genotype screening, standardized tDCS protocols, and policy advocacy can optimize CNS rehabilitation in Indonesia. This study provides the first evidence-based guide combining neuroscience and health policy.

Abstract

Stress is a physiological and psychological response triggered by internal or external stressors that challenge the body's homeostasis. Cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone released by the adrenal glands in response to stress, plays a pivotal role in modulating this response. Its primary function is to mobilize energy, regulate inflammation, and enhance cognitive processes during acute stress. While cortisol facilitates adaptation by suppressing overactive immune responses and ensuring resource availability, its prolonged elevation can lead to detrimental effects, including metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive impairments. Conversely, inadequate cortisol production disrupts the body’s ability to manage stress, resulting in conditions like fatigue, hypotension, and impaired recovery. This study explores the dynamic relationship between stress and cortisol, emphasizing how balanced cortisol levels contribute to stress resolution and homeostasis restoration. Understanding cortisol’s dual role provides insights into its potential therapeutic applications for managing stress-related disorders.

Abstract

Centella asiatica (CA) in Indonesia is known as gotu kola plant which is known to have many compounds contained in it, such as Asiatic acid, madecassic acid (6-hydroxyacetic acid), asiaticoside, madecassoside, betulinic acid, thankunic acid, and isothankunic acid. This study is to determine the benefits of CA triterpenoid bioactive content and the mechanism of CA as a neuropretective against alzheimer's disease. This research used the literature study method by searching online data on various types of article publications and selected according to the PRISMA method. From the literature collected, it was found that CA has the ability as a neoroprotective against Alzheimer's disease. This is because triterpenoid compounds with the bioactive content of asiaticoside, madecid acid, and asiatic acid play a role in inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase which can act as a neuroprotective in the brain by reducing ROS production which can then restore mitochondrial dysfunction and can improve nerve function in Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract

Reproductive health is a multidimensional state of physical, mental, and social well-being, covering all aspects of the reproductive system, functions, and processes. Cervical cancer is abnormal cell growth and development, which can lead to abnormal function of the reproductive organs and generally affects women of reproductive age, so the impact on the family is very significant. This study aims to determine the factors between the level of knowledge, access to information, and husband/family support with low Acetic Acid Visual Inspection (IVA) visits. This type of research is survey research with an analytical approach cross-sectional. The samples taken were 67 respondents obtained by the technique of purposive Sampling. The instrument used is a questionnaire. The data obtained is processed using a test Chi Square with a degree of significance (α) = 0.05. The results showed that there was a significant influence between the factors associated with the low number of IVA visits, namely the level of knowledge, access to information, and husband/family support. In the statistical test, the p-value is 0.000. The conclusions of WUS researchers who are married should always pay attention to their reproductive health, one of which is the IVA examination.
