Abstract

This paper aims to reveal the knowledge of the Gayo community about buffalo ethnotaxonomy so as to provide a good alternative for sustainability issues in maintaining local wisdom and identity. This research was conducted in Gayo Lues Regency using a qualitative approach because the main purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge and understanding of the Gayo community based on the emic perspective of the community regarding the classification of buffalo species. The data collection techniques used participatory observation, in-depth interviews, FGDs and document studies. The results showed that the knowledge of the Gayo community regarding the genetic ethnotaxonomy of buffalo can be seen from their ability to classify livestock types based on gender, skin color and horn shape owned by buffalo. There are six types of horns identified, namely: Caweng / Gaweng, Gonok, Gampang, Durung / Cakah, Rukup, Rebah, and Gope / Gupik. As for skin color, there are four categories, namely segem, jeged, impil-impil and sawak. The shape and characteristics possessed are indicators in determining the quality of the buffalo because it is correlated with the ability to endure, have energy and the quality of the meat produced. Knowledge of this matter is very useful for parties with an interest in the world of livestock to be used as a basis for policy making.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to develop and analyze the effectiveness of the Meutaloe Wareeh agricultural empowerment model in organic rice farmer groups in North Aceh. Meutaloe Wareeh is a local wisdom approach rooted in the values of cooperation and togetherness in Acehnese society, which is applied in sustainable agricultural land management. This model integrates organic farming practices with the principles of active farmer participation, environmentally friendly natural resource management, and capacity building through training and mentoring. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the Meutaloe Wareeh model significantly increased organic rice productivity and farmer welfare in North Aceh. In addition, this model has succeeded in reducing farmer dependence on chemical agricultural inputs and increasing local food security. Factors such as community commitment, government support, and access to organic markets have also played a role in the success of this model. However, challenges related to technology adaptation and climate change are still major concerns. Overall, the Meutaloe Wareeh model has proven great potential as a holistic and sustainable agricultural empowerment strategy, which can be replicated in other areas with adjustments to the local context.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the root causes, forms of conflict, and solutions to farmers' resistance against free-grazing livestock practices in Nisam Subdistrict, North Aceh Regency. The conflict is triggered by crop damage caused by free-roaming livestock, differing interpretations of regulations, and land-use changes. This research employs a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method and uses James Scott's resistance theory as the analytical framework. Data were collected through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the conflict significantly impacts agricultural productivity and social relations between farmers and livestock owners. Proposed solutions include restricting grazing areas, improving fences, providing compensation to farmers, and strengthening the role of the government and village officials in enforcing regulations, providing facilities, and monitoring. These findings underscore the importance of stakeholder collaboration in fostering harmonious relations and supporting the sustainability of the agricultural sector. Abstract

As a basic necessity, the availability of foodstuffs requires the state to be involved in its fulfillment through regulation. In carrying out of the functions, the state also makes regulations on other aspects. That condition, sometimes, raises contradictory things at the stage of implementation, especially at the local level. Culturally, the system of the food supply of proteins sourced from buffalo practiced by many tribes in Indonesia including by the Gayo community in Gayo Lues District. In Gayo, the system of traditional buffalo farms is called Uwer. It is interesting to see how the food policy has contributed to the local cattle tradition. This is the problem in this study. As a preliminary study result, data on research gathered through work fields and literature studies. Results of the study showed that there are many food policies at the national level that directly or indirectly contribute to the existence of traditional livestock patterns including farms that are practiced by the Gayo community. On its development, the Gayo community has also made modifications to the Uwer system to response the social and cultural changes. If not accompanied by protection and conservation efforts, local buffalo livestock systems that reloaded with local wisdom values will potentially lose or abandoned by the public.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze employment policies to protect children's rights in employment relationships in South Sulawesi as an effort to guarantee citizens' constitutional rights as stipulated in laws and regulations on employment. This study is an empirical legal study analyzed using human rights theory, child protection and corporate social responsibility theory. Data collection techniques used in-depth interviews and literature review. The findings reveal that labor policies aimed at safeguarding children remain inadequate, resulting in economic, social, and moral exploitation, as well as negative consequences for children’s education, health, and overall development. The absence of adequate protection in employment relations ultimately hinders the formation of high-quality human resources. To address this, stronger government intervention and oversight are essential, particularly through the effective empowerment of labor inspectors to enforce regulations. This study recommends the need for harmonization of the Human Rights Law, the Employment Law, and the Child Protection Law, as well as the establishment of an Independent Employment Oversight Committee involving academic experts. Such measures are necessary to ensure the effective implementation of labor protections, prevent the exploitation of children, and support Indonesia’s goal of cultivating superior human resources by 2045.
