Abstract

To overcome insufficient sweet corn production in Indonesia, various strategies have been developed to improve its production. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of organic fertilizer (i.e. cow manure) and inorganic fertilizer application on nutrient uptake and yield of sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt). Inceptisol possess low soil fertility and relatively low to moderate level of organic matter content. Application of organic fertilizer in combination with inorganic fertilizers is expected to increase N, P and K uptake and yield of sweet corn. This study was conducted from October 2016 to February 2017 at the Field Experimental Station of Agriculture Faculty, Universitas Padjadjaran in Jatinangor, West Java. The study was performed in a Randomized Block Design consisting of 10 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments were as follow: A = Control, B = Standard NPK, C = 0 NPK + 1 organic fertilizer, D = ¼ NPK + 1 organic fertilizer, E = ½ NPK + 1 organic fertilizer,  F = ¾ NPK + 1 organic fertilizer, G = 1 NPK + 1 organic fertilizer, H = ¾ NPK + ¼ organic fertilizer, I = ¾ NPK + ½ organic fertilizer and J = ¾ NPK + ¾ organic fertilizer. The results showed that the treatment I (¾ NPK + ½ organic fertilizer) resulted in the highest N, P and K uptake, i.e. 54.31 mg plant-1; 82.85 mg plant-1 and 56.40 mg plant-1, respectively and the heaviest weight of sweet corn, i.e. 407.33 g.

Abstract

Sustainable rice farming is increasingly threatened by declining soil fertility, excessive reliance on chemical fertilizers, and environmental degradation from intensive agricultural practices. There is an urgent need for innovative organic fertilizer products that combine organic materials with macro and micronutrient enhancements to restore soil health effectively. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of organic plus fertilizer (OPF) as a sustainable soil amendment to improve soil nutrient status, increase paddy productivity, and enhance overall soil health. The experiment was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with nine treatments: one recommended OPF dose, six combinations of NPK (75 – 100%) and OPF (75 – 150%), one recommended conventional NPK dose, and one control. Variables observed included plant growth, yield, and yield components, total soil nitrogen, and plant uptake of N, P, and K. Results indicated that OPF combined with NPK significantly increased plant height (29.13 – 31.38%) and number of panicles (57.89%) compared to the control. Nutrient uptake improved for nitrogen (23.68%) and potassium (15.96 – 21.28%), although no significant improvement was observed for phosphorus. Yield parameters showed an 81.97%–118.50% increase over the control. The combinations of 75% NPK + 150% OPF, 100% NPK + 75% OPF, and 100% NPK + 100% OPF produced taller plants, higher yields, greater nutrient uptake, and lower residual nitrogen in the soil. For optimal rice yield and soil health, integrated application of OPF with either a full or 75% NPK dose is recommended.

Abstract

Nitrogen is an essential soil nutrient that is often a limiting factor in agricultural practices due to its tendency to be easily lost from the soil through various natural processes. Maintaining and increasing nitrogen availability in the soil is a primary focus in efforts to increase agricultural productivity. The purpose of this article is to provide information on the potential of various compost and biochar materials as soil amendments. The method used was a literature review to collect data related to compost and biochar. Various sources of compost and biochar contain varying nutrient contents, which have the potential to increase nitrogen availability in the soil. Compost application to the soil contributes to the nitrogen cycle through mineralization and immobilization processes, and nitrogen adsorption by biochar can reduce nitrogen leaching. The application of various types of compost or a combination with biochar is recommended to maintain nutrient balance and improve soil quality. Future research can explore further to determine optimal strategies for compost and biochar application to support more productive and sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

The inefficiency of chemical fertilizers in crop production has encouraged the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives. One of the approaches is through the useof organic fertilizers enriched with beneficial microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effectof N, P, K fertilizers combination with kasgot (vermicompost derived from sewage sludge) enrichedwith biofertilizers on the yield of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) grown on Inceptisols. The experiment wasconducted from February to September 2024 at the Experimental Field of the Faculty of Agriculture,Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor. A Randomized Complete Block Design was used, consisted ofeight treatments: one control (no fertilizer), one treatment with the recommended N, P, K dose, onetreatment with ¾ of the recommended dose of inorganic fertilizer, and and five treatments withvarious doses of kasgot enriched with biofertilizers and NPK fertilizers. Each treatment was replicatedthree times. The results showed that the combination of ¾ NPK dose and 1½ dose of enriched withbiofertilizers resulted in the best growth and yield performance. This treatment produced the highestear weight with husk (495.95 g), ear length (20.56 cm), and ear diameter (56.00 mm) compared toother treatments. The result suggested that the integrated application of biofertilizers and reduceddoses of chemical fertilizers can improve sweet corn yield while minimize the dependence on syntheticinputs, which promotes more sustainable and efficient agricultural practices.

Abstract

Phosphorus (P) deficiency in intensively cultivated Inceptisols is a persistent problem, not only because of low P reserves but also because of ongoing soil degradation, which reduces fertilizer use efficiency and is characteristic of degraded soils. This study aimed to develop a “new” humic acid from water hyacinth biomass (WHL) through accelerated aerobic decomposition using lignocellulolytic microorganisms and to evaluate its effectiveness in improving soil P dynamics and chili growth responses. The experiment was conducted on P-deficient Inceptisols of the Jatinangor series characterized by low P availability and high metal content. Water hyacinth collected from local reservoirs and rivers was aerobically decomposed with selected microbial starters to enhance humification. WHL was applied in combination with inorganic P fertilizer (SP-36), and its effects on soil P availability, phosphorus dynamics, and chili pepper growth and yield were evaluated using path analysis. The results showed that WHL significantly improved P dynamics mainly through an indirect mechanism involving increased P availability and reduced P fixation, thereby improving chili growth and yield. Application of WHL at a rate of 30 kg ha?¹ combined with SP-36 at a rate of 250 kg ha?¹ produced responses comparable to those obtained with commercial humic acid. These findings indicate that WHL has strong potential as a renewable and cost-effective alternative source of humic acid to improve phosphorus efficiency, restore soil chemical function, and reduce dependence on inorganic P fertilizers in degraded Inceptisols under intensive cultivation.

Abstract

Abstract

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) compost provides a sustainable opportunity to improve soil fertility while managing an invasive aquatic weed. This study evaluated the optimal combination of water hyacinth compost and NPKS fertilizers for enhancing soil chemical properties, nutrient uptake, and shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) yield on Inceptisols. The experiment was conducted from July to October 2023 using a Randomized Complete Block Design with seven fertilization treatments, including a control treatment without compost or NPKS, a compost-only treatment, a full NPKS treatment, and four combined treatments consisting of compost at ¼, ½, ¾, and 1 dosage levels each paired with ¾ of the recommended N, P, K, and S fertilizers. Results showed substantial improvements in soil chemistry, particularly in treatments combining compost with reduced mineral fertilizer rates. Soil pH increased toward neutral conditions, total nitrogen rose from 0.10% in the control to 0.32%, and available phosphorus and potassium increased more than fourfold compared with unfertilized soil. The treatment of ¾ compost dose (18.75 t ha⁻¹) + ¾ recommended NPKS consistently produced the highest soil nutrient availability, reflecting enhanced mineralization and nutrient retention. Nutrient uptake by shallot plants also improved markedly, with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium absorption increasing two- to threefold relative to the control. These improvements corresponded with clear gains in crop performance: the number of bulbs increased from 5 in the control to 9, and fresh bulb weight rose from 92.89 g to 132.26 g. Integrated treatments outperformed both compost-alone and full mineral fertilization. These findings indicate that combining water hyacinth compost with reduced NPKS fertilization can maintain high shallot productivity while decreasing reliance on chemical fertilizers, enhancing soil fertility, and providing an environmentally beneficial use for invasive aquatic biomass—supporting sustainable and circular nutrient management in low-fertility tropical soils

Abstract

Gold mine tailings are characterized by low organic matter, poor nutrient availability, extreme pH conditions, and unfavorable texture, all of which restrict plant growth. This study evaluated the effects of cow manure (CM) on soil chemical properties, carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and the growth and biomass of water kale (Ipomoea reptans Poir.) cultivated in tailings-based media. A greenhouse experiment was arranged in a randomized block design consisting of five treatments: 0% (control), 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60% CM (v/v), each replicated six times. Observations included soil pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratio, plant growth parameters, biomass, and microbial populations at 35 days after planting. The application of CM significantly increased organic C, total N, and the C/N ratio, with the highest values observed at 60% CM. However, higher CM doses reduced substrate pH to slightly acidic levels. The 15% CM treatment produced the greatest improvements in plant growth and biomass, increasing plant height by 21%, stem thickness by 29%, leaf number by 8%, and fresh and dry biomass by 73% and 120%, respectively, compared with the control. Increasing CM above 15% enhanced the C/N ratio but did not further improve plant performance, likely due to reduced nitrogen availability associated with higher organic matter and slower mineralization. CM applications did not significantly affect bacterial or fungal populations in the rhizosphere. Overall, the findings indicate that low-dose CM (15%) is optimal for improving the C/N ratio, supporting nutrient availability, and enhancing water kale growth in tailings. This study demonstrates the potential of organic amendments for rehabilitating gold mine tailings and highlights their role in restoring soil functionality and supporting sustainable revegetation efforts.
