Abstract

Climate is an important factor which influences the growth and productivity of oil palm. The current oil palm cultivation system is vulnerable to climate change. For example, there was a decline in global oil palm production in 2015 due to ENSO, particularly affecting Southeast Asia. Extreme drought causes oil palm plants to experience water stress, while forest fires due to drought inhibit the photosynthesis process. A comprehensive study of the Systematic Literature Review was carried out using bibliometric analysis, systematic review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methods, using the search engines Scopus and ScienceDirect with the keywords “palm AND oil AND production AND climate AND change”, “impact AND climate AND change AND coconut palm AND oil”, “palm AND oil AND adaptation AND climate AND change”, “palm AND oil AND mitigation AND climate AND change”. A thorough scientific literature review obtained 1331 papers from Scopus and ScienceDirect. Out of these, only 26 articles were selected for further examination. Based on the literature, there are several strategies for increasing oil palm productivity in the era of climate change. These strategies can be done through agronomic management, providing fertilizer from oil palm biomass, and maintaining irrigation for water availability. This literature study provides recommendations for strategies for increasing oil palm productivity in the face of climate change.

Abstract

Soil fertility is recognized as a crucial factor in supporting plant growth and productivity. The utilization of biofertilizers as environmentally friendly fertilizers is aimed at enhancing soil fertility and plant productivity. This study aims to explore the potential of local material for developing local wisdom biofertilizers (LWB) for achieving sustainable agriculture. A systematic literature review was conducted using bibliometric analysis, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews, and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method, employing the Scopus search engine with the keywords "local AND wisdom AND biofertilizer" OR "biofertilizer" OR "local AND microorganism" OR "soil AND health OR crop AND productivity OR sustainable agriculture". The search yielded 704 articles, of which 11 were deemed eligible after selection. Based on the literature review, it was found that there are local materials, including fish waste, seaweed, Azolla, fruit waste, Moringa oleifera, microalga, bamboo roots, banana hump, golden snail, mangrove leaves, fruit, and vegetable waste that can be used as raw materials for LWB to improve soil health, plant growth, and productivity. The development of LWB as a new fertilizer technology faces challenges such as lack of regulations, low public trust, limited farmer awareness, weak promotion, and raw material shortages. Further research is needed to intensively study and enhance the effectiveness of LWB through enrichment using beneficial microorganisms.

Abstract

Shallots are a high-value horticultural commodity that requires optimal phosphorus (P) availability tosupport growth and bulb production. However, Inceptisol soils have limitations in providing phosphorusdue to their high fixation capacity and low organic matter content. This study aimed to examine the effectof liquid NPK fertilizer application on soil phosphorus availability, plant phosphorus uptake, and shallotbulb yield in Inceptisol soil. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design(RCBD) with six treatments: control, recommended NPK fertilizer, and four doses of liquid NPK fertilizer(½, 1, 1 ½, and 2 doses), each with four replications. The results showed that liquid NPK fertilizerapplication significantly increased soil phosphorus availability, plant phosphorus uptake, and both freshand dry bulb weights compared to the control. The 1 ½-dose liquid NPK fertilizer treatment resulted in anavailable P content of 12.72 ppm, a phosphorus uptake of 3.28 mg plant⁻¹, a fresh bulb weight of 78.63 gclump⁻¹, and a dry bulb weight of 63.86 g clump⁻¹, which were not significantly different from therecommended NPK treatment. This indicates that applying 1 ½ doses of liquid NPK fertilizer can serve asan equivalent alternative to conventional granular NPK fertilizer in providing phosphorus for shallotcultivation. Thus, the application of liquid NPK fertilizer at 1 ½ times the recommended dose can beproposed as an effective and efficient fertilization strategy to improve shallot productivity in Inceptisol soil.

Abstract

Intensive use of inorganic fertilizers has led to soil degradation, decreased productivity, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Humic acid (HA) offers a sustainable solution by improving soil health and nutrient uptake while reducing dependence on chemical inputs. However, commercial HA from leonardite is expensive and rarely available in Indonesia. This study aimed to develop a high-quality and cost-effective HA product from low-rank coal (LRC) mined in South Sumatra. Given LRC’s low calorific value and high organic content, it presents an underutilized but promising HA source. A descriptive quantitative approach was used, starting with LRC selection and modified extraction to obtain HA. Laboratory-scale characterization revealed that locally sourced HA shares many functional groups with commercial leonardite-based HA. Hydrofluoric acid pretreatment significantly increased HA yield from 26.3% to 44%. A field trial was conducted on degraded soil overused with inorganic fertilizers, using a completely randomized block design with five treatments and five replications. Red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) was selected because of its high economic value. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at a significance level of 5%. The results showed that the combination of HA derived from LRC with low phosphate fertilizer (150 kg ha-1 SP-36 + 27 kg ha-1 HA) significantly increased plant height, fruit yield, and soil P availability, resulting in a yield of more than 28 t ha-1. These findings demonstrate the potential of LRC as a sustainable HA source to restore degraded soils and increase crop productivity in Indonesia.
