Abstract

Introduction: HIV/AIDS remains a major public health issue, impacting patients' physical, social, and psychological well-being. Psychological effects like anxiety, stress, and depression are prevalent due to stigma, uncertain prognosis, and treatment complexity. Persistent stress weakens the immune system, accelerates disease progression, and reduces quality of life. Psychotherapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), has been widely developed and proven effective in managing these issues. Objective: This study aims to examine the effect of CBT on reducing anxiety, stress, and depression in HIV/AIDS patients. Methods: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methods was used to select articles. Critical Appraisal Skills Programme was used for quality assessment. Discussion: This study reviewed ten articles on CBT's impact. Seven articles discussed CBT, two covered yoga therapy, and one explored mindfulness therapy. Results and Conclusions: CBT effectively reduces anxiety, stress, and depression in HIV/AIDS patients. Combining CBT with other therapies, such as Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Medication Management Algorithm (MMA), and Enhanced Usual Depression Care (EUDC) plus the Healthy Options program, can provide additional benefits. CBT also improves patients' quality of life and has been shown to reduce HIV viral load.

Abstract

Background: Headaches are common among students due to academic stress and poor sleep habits. One way to reduce headaches is through neck exercises using Thariqah movements. Previous studies have focused only on physical neck exercises, yet a more holistic approach by combining dzikr (Laa ilaha ilallah) recited Thariqah movements with the exercises has never been studied.Purpose: This study aimed to determine the impact of Thariqah-based neck exercises on headache intensity experienced by college students. Methods: The study used a two-arm parallel randomized controlled trial design. College nursing students were recruited through purposive sampling and then sequentially randomized, with 64 respondents in each group. Participants in the intervention group performed Thariqah-based neck exercises during dzikr three times per week for three weeks, while those in the control group received educational leaflets on headache management. Headache intensity was measured using the Numeric Pain Scale (0-10 scale). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The results showed that Thariqah-based neck exercises performed during dzikr had a significant effect on reducing headache intensity among students (p= 0.000). The differences in headache intensity before and after the intervention were also significant between the intervention and control groups (p=0.000).Conclusion: Neck exercises based on Thariqah movements accompanied by dzikr recitation may serve as a practical option for self-therapy or complementary therapy in managing mild to moderate headache complaints. The integration of physical and spiritual elements offers potential benefits for both physical relief and emotional well-being.

Abstract

Anxiety is a common psychological issue experienced by patients undergoing hospitalization, particularly those diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), due to prolonged treatment periods and fear of stigma. As much as health education has been proposed as a potential intervention, research conducted so far is limited and varies in study methodology, and thus it's difficult to make conclusions. Further, there is no synthesized evidence regarding the impact of formal health education on anxiety among hospitalized TB patients, particularly where there is cultural diversity. This study aims to review the effect of health education interventions on anxiety levels in  TB patients. A systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Literature was identified through PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest databases.  Inclusion criteria: RCTs or quasi-experimental studies involving pulmonary TB patients, evaluating the effect of health education on anxiety compared to other psychological interventions. Fifteen articles met the eligibility criteria and were included for analysis. The reviews summarized between 2019 and 2024 consistently showed that health education significantly reduces anxiety in hospital-admitted TB patients. This review update encapsulates the up-to-date evidence, expanding on the earlier work by adding recent evidence, mentioning varied forms such as single sessions, multimedia gadgets, and culturally sensitive materials. The findings highlight the importance of integrating health education as part of comprehensive TB care to address psychological distress and improve treatment outcomes.

Abstract

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease, commonly characterized by chronic airway inflammation and symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing of varying intensity. These symptoms often lead to sleep disturbances at night among asthma patients. Approximately 80% of the global population uses traditional medicine, including essential oils (EO), such as peppermint EO, to address primary health concerns. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The total sample consisted of 49 respondents, with 25 assigned to the intervention group and 24 to the control group. The results revealed a significant improvement in sleep quality between the pre-test and post-test in the intervention group (p-value = 0.000; α < 0.05), as well as a significant difference in sleep quality between the intervention and control groups post-intervention (p-value = 0.000; α < 0.05). Peppermint essential oil was found to positively influence the sleep quality of asthma patients and can therefore be considered a complementary approach to improving their sleep.

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), occurring both in the pre-dialysis stage and among individuals undergoing hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. These disturbances can significantly impair overall quality of life. Various factors contribute to sleep disorders in CKD patients, including the accumulation of uremic toxins, pain, pruritus, dyspnea, anxiety, and the side effects associated with dialysis therapy itself. Physical activity-based interventions, such as aerobic exercise and yoga, have shown substantial potential in improving sleep quality. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the effects of yoga and aerobic exercise interventions on sleep quality in patients with CKD. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases including ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, the International Journal of Health Sciences and Research, Springer, and the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research. Only full-text articles published in English between 2019 and 2024 were included. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Thirteen studies were identified: 11 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), 1 quasi-experimental study, and 1 qualitative study. Analysis of the 11 RCTs revealed that various interventions—particularly yoga, aerobic exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) were employed to improve sleep quality. Among these, yoga and aerobic exercise were found to significantly enhance sleep quality in CKD patients, especially those undergoing hemodialysis, with aerobic exercise demonstrating more consistent benefits. Conversely, CBT did not produce significant improvements in sleep quality compared to the control group, though it did show limited effects on reducing depressive symptoms and dysfunctional beliefs. The quasi-experimental study examined the impact of yoga exercise and found it to be a contributing factor to improved quality of life, including better sleep. The qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of CKD patients with fatigue caused by poor sleep, aligning with the study's aim of understanding this phenomenon from the patient’s perspective.
