Abstract

Introduction: HIV/AIDS remains a major public health issue, impacting patients' physical, social, and psychological well-being. Psychological effects like anxiety, stress, and depression are prevalent due to stigma, uncertain prognosis, and treatment complexity. Persistent stress weakens the immune system, accelerates disease progression, and reduces quality of life. Psychotherapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), has been widely developed and proven effective in managing these issues. Objective: This study aims to examine the effect of CBT on reducing anxiety, stress, and depression in HIV/AIDS patients. Methods: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methods was used to select articles. Critical Appraisal Skills Programme was used for quality assessment. Discussion: This study reviewed ten articles on CBT's impact. Seven articles discussed CBT, two covered yoga therapy, and one explored mindfulness therapy. Results and Conclusions: CBT effectively reduces anxiety, stress, and depression in HIV/AIDS patients. Combining CBT with other therapies, such as Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Medication Management Algorithm (MMA), and Enhanced Usual Depression Care (EUDC) plus the Healthy Options program, can provide additional benefits. CBT also improves patients' quality of life and has been shown to reduce HIV viral load.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction: Diseases that are considered particularly dominant in Indonesia are now starting to shift toward chronic diseases and one of which is diabetes mellitus (DM). Ever since a patient is diagnosed with DM, DM management must be carried out continuously and it will bring changes to the patients’ lifestyle. Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) is a health indicator which covers interrelated subjective and multidimensional concepts, including assessment of physical, functional, psychological, and religious aspects. Self Monitoring Blood Glucose (SMBG) is a part of DM disease management which allows control of the glycemic index and quality of life. However, potential benefits of SMBG implementation needs to be discovered further. Objective: The purpose of this article is to determine the potential of SMBG in DM management and its relation to the glycemic index and quality of life. Methods: Literature review of this article based on EBSCOhost, PubMed, ProQuest, Willey Library Online dan ScienceDirect from 2013 - 2019. Results: The result shows that SMBG had a significant impact on HRQoL and glycemic index control. Conclusion: The role of nurses in the provision of comprehensive education is essential to increase the knowledge of the use of SMBG and drive patient’s motivation to ensure they are able to properly report the results of SMBG that they conducted.

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), occurring both in the pre-dialysis stage and among individuals undergoing hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. These disturbances can significantly impair overall quality of life. Various factors contribute to sleep disorders in CKD patients, including the accumulation of uremic toxins, pain, pruritus, dyspnea, anxiety, and the side effects associated with dialysis therapy itself. Physical activity-based interventions, such as aerobic exercise and yoga, have shown substantial potential in improving sleep quality. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the effects of yoga and aerobic exercise interventions on sleep quality in patients with CKD. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases including ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, the International Journal of Health Sciences and Research, Springer, and the Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research. Only full-text articles published in English between 2019 and 2024 were included. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Thirteen studies were identified: 11 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs), 1 quasi-experimental study, and 1 qualitative study. Analysis of the 11 RCTs revealed that various interventions—particularly yoga, aerobic exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) were employed to improve sleep quality. Among these, yoga and aerobic exercise were found to significantly enhance sleep quality in CKD patients, especially those undergoing hemodialysis, with aerobic exercise demonstrating more consistent benefits. Conversely, CBT did not produce significant improvements in sleep quality compared to the control group, though it did show limited effects on reducing depressive symptoms and dysfunctional beliefs. The quasi-experimental study examined the impact of yoga exercise and found it to be a contributing factor to improved quality of life, including better sleep. The qualitative study employed a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of CKD patients with fatigue caused by poor sleep, aligning with the study's aim of understanding this phenomenon from the patient’s perspective.

Abstract

Sleep disturbances are common in patients with stroke and chronic kidney disease, potentially worsening health conditions and reducing quality of life. Non-pharmacological interventions have received less research attention, despite the potential for non-pharmacological approaches to improve sleep quality without causing side effects. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in this population. Randomized controlled trials involving patients with stroke and chronic kidney disease aged >18 years were searched in seven English-language databases. Methodological quality was assessed using the JBI critical appraisal tool, and data were synthesized. 9 RCTs met inclusion criteria and demonstrated significant benefits. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (4 studies) consistently improved sleep quality and reduced fatigue, anxiety, and depression (p < 0.001). Reflexology (2 studies) decreased anxiety and improved sleep quality (p < 0.001). Acupuncture significantly improved ISI, PSQI, and HADS scores (p < 0.001–0.003). Lavender aromatherapy reduced depression and improved sleep quality (p < 0.001), while spiritual care improved sleep quality and spiritual well-being (p < 0.001). These findings highlight the role of nurses in implementing non-pharmacological interventions to address sleep disturbances and related psychological symptoms in patients with stroke and chronic kidney disease. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is recommended for patients with insomnia and psychological comorbidities, reflexology and massage may be beneficial for those undergoing hemodialysis, while acupuncture, aromatherapy, and spiritual care can be tailored to individual needs. Further research is needed to assess their long-term effectiveness and their integration into broader clinical practice.
