Abstract

Abstract

The present study aims to examine the orientation and significance of Amben Tengah within traditional Javanese households, with a specific focus on the Tulungagung region in East Java. The exploration of Amben Tengah, a sacred space situated within these dwellings, is undertaken in the context of the house's overarching orientation and its association with cultural beliefs and practices. The findings of the study indicate that Amben Tengah generally corresponds to the alignment of the primary entrance of Javanese houses, which conventionally faces south, facilitating convenient entry from the main entrance. Nevertheless, there are differences in the orientation of Amben Tengah observed in buildings that no longer prioritise facing the mountain, so underscoring the significant role of Amben Tengah in the architectural design of Javanese houses. Notwithstanding alterations in its orientation, Amben Tengah persists in its role as a hallowed venue for religious practices, as well as for the provision of sleeping quarters and storage facilities. This study illuminates the lasting cultural importance of Amben Tengah in the architectural and spiritual context of traditional Javanese dwellings.

Abstract

Rapid land use change due to population growth and urbanization presents significant challenges to urban development. This study aims to map the groundwater level and water infiltration conditions in residential areas and investigate the conditions in the Kanigoro Urban Area. This research identifies a spatial approach to analyze satellite image maps with ARC GIS software for land cover changes that overlap with slope maps, soil types, rainfall, groundwater basins, groundwater flow patterns, and spatial pattern plan maps to obtain water infiltration conditions and building distribution. The analysis showed that water infiltration capacity has been reduced due to converting open land into built-up areas, resulting in decreased groundwater quality and quantity and an increased risk of flooding.  Based on water infiltration capacity and potential environmental impacts, this map recommends the best locations for settlement development. The results show that the water infiltration condition of most settlement areas in the Kanigoro Urban Area is critical or rather critical. Therefore, efforts must be made to increase water infiltration capacity by implementing sustainable drainage systems, developing green open spaces, and utilizing environmentally friendly technologies. This research produced a settlement direction map based on the analysis of water catchment conditions and groundwater levels that can be used by local governments when they make better and more sustainable spatial plans. Keywords: infiltration, spatial approach, sustainable settlement

Abstract

This study aims to determine and see research opportunities related to the application of spatial syntax to spatial configuration in the scope of architecture. The research method uses bibliometric analysis with the keywords Spatial Syntax and Spatial Configuration in the period 2016-2024 using Mendeley software to collect data and VOSviewer software to visualize the data obtained. The results of data collection using Mendeley contain 75 scientific article data related to spatial syntax and spatial configuration. Meanwhile, the results of image visualization using VOSviewer software show 34 clusters and 184 items (topics) that are interrelated. Bibliometric analysis shows that spatial syntax is closely related to the topics of spatial configuration, urban morphology, and social interaction in architectural science. The development of research on the application of the spatial syntax method to spatial configuration is expected to be carried out in the future through this study.
