Abstract

Given the disempowered status of translation as is shown in the fact that it is typically regarded or treated as secondary, derivative, and thus inferior, the necessity to further explore ways to empower translation needs to be recognized and reaffirmed. This study aimed at investigating the untranslatability of masculinity, transcultural practice of cultural word-loaded translation, and performative masculinity found in Robert Baden Powell’s Scouting for Boys from English into Indonesian since not all cultural terms in Source Text can be fully transferred into Target Text as well as the translator’s decision to overcome the problem of untranslatability since English and Indonesian have very different cultural concepts. In this qualitative descriptive study, the data in the forms of words, phrases, or sentences denoting performative masculinity have been taken from the book of Robert Baden Powell’s Scouting for Boys. The results show that when the aforementioned study found that the loan word or loan word plus explanation strategy can be used to deal with the problem of untranslatability. Every strategy, procedure, and method offer a solution to translation difficulties, one of which is retaining words from the source text into the target text via transference, naturalization, and notes to untranslatability of masculinity, transcultural practice in cultural word-loaded translation, and performative masculinity. Translation must and can be empowered, and to avoid weak translation, the translator needs to be prepared to engage with complexity and search for better alternatives by relentlessly probing the network of possibilities.

Abstract

This research aims to examine how interpreters translate conceptual metaphors in President Joko Widodo's speech during the 2022 G20 Summit meeting in Bali. This research used the basic conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and the metaphor translation theory by Broeck (1981) in its analysis. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The data source in this research was taken from President Joko Widodo's speech at the G20 Summit in Bali, which KOMPASTV uploaded. This research has three stages: data provision stage, data analysis stage, and data analysis results presentation stage. The researcher found 76 conceptual metaphor data from the study in President Joko Widodo's speech at the 2022 G20 Summit meeting. Of the 76 conceptual metaphors found, there are 53 (69.7%) metaphors translated with the same imagery, 13 (17.1%) metaphors translated with different imagery, and 10 (13.2 %) metaphors had their imagery removed. Most of the metaphors in this speech were translated while maintaining ST's original image (69.7%).

Abstract

Localization of video games makes it easier for players with different language settings to play foreign games. However, a few games customized their game with cultural terms that may confuse the player. This research aimed to examine (1) cultural resistance and negotiation terms, (2) and the subtitling strategy translation on the game Pamali: Indonesian Folklore Horror - The Tied Corpse by StoryTale Studios. The data sources were extracted from words, phrases, and sentences from the game subtitles in Indonesian and English versions. Document observation was used as the data collection technique, meanwhile content analysis was used as the data analysis technique. Cultural-related term classification data were analyzed using the combined taxonomic theory of cultural-term from (Newmark, 1988; Tomalin and Stempleski, 2013; Zare-Behtash and Firoozkoohi, 2013). Gottlieb's (1994) subtitle translation strategy was used by the researcher to identifiy the translation process. The result shows six resisted data in three cultural-term categories; Dialect, Ideas; Beliefs. On the other hand, forty-one negotiated data were found in ten cultural-related categories; Ideas; beliefs, Concept; religion, Dialect, Gesture and Habit, Ecology, Idiom, House and Towns, Artefact, Date, and Antrophonym. The Imitation subtitling strategy is found in the resisted data. Meanwhile, the negosiated data applied the Transfer, Transcription, Expansion, Paraphrase, and Deletion subtitling strategy. The negotiation strategy was applied more than the resistance to commercially make the video game accessible to the international player. Keywords: resistance and negotiation, cultural-related term, subtitles, Pamali: Indonesian folklore horror - The tied corpse

Abstract

Abstract

Phonological ability reflects the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms required for children to learn and produce speech. This study aims to map phonological processes in early childhood at PAUD institutions in Tasikmalaya. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 315 children aged 4–6 years (77 aged 4, 148 aged 5, and 90 aged 6) across five schools: RA Baiturrahman, TK Negeri Pembina, TK Cangkurileung Kartika IX-10, TK IT Ihya As-Sunah, and Joykids. Speech samples in Indonesian were obtained through recordings of both structured and conversational speech. Data validity was ensured through expert judgment, and analysis followed the stages of data reduction, display, and verification. Results show that assimilation was the most dominant phonological process for both vowels and consonants across all ages. For vowels, assimilation declined with age (9 cases at age 4, 7 at age 5, and 3 at age 6), while addition (4 → 2 → 2) and substitution (3 → 0 → 1) were less frequent. Consonant assimilation was more prevalent (62 → 71 → 27), with gliding substitution (13 → 5 → 0) and general substitution (4 → 2 → 0) steadily decreasing. Sound addition appeared only at age 6 (3 cases). These findings indicate that vowel mastery stabilizes earlier, while consonant mastery involves more complex developmental processes. The study provides baseline data for identifying phonological difficulties early and offers guidance for PAUD teachers to recognize ongoing phonological processes beyond age six as possible signs of language delay.
