Abstract

Abstract

Agroforestry in North Kalimantan offers a promising avenue for balancing community livelihoods with carbon sequestration, crucial for the REDD+ initiatives. This paper examines the potential of agroforestry in North Kalimantan to support the REDD+ program, addressing both environmental sustainability and socio-economic development. Through field observations and interviews across four regencies and one city in North Kalimantan province, various agroforestry practices were identified, including improved fallows, alley cropping, scattered trees on cropland, living fences, and silvofishery. Challenges such as cultivation practices, post-harvest processing, market access, and financing were also explored. Three potential agroforestry models were proposed to enhance carbon capture while promoting local economic resilience. The paper underscores the importance of further research and community involvement to refine and expand these agroforestry approaches, offering hope for both local prosperity and global carbon reduction efforts.

Abstract

Tip of the Tongue (ToT) is a condition that hinders the production of fluency in speech. This study aims to identify stress patterns and factors that influence the emergence of ToT states. This research used a quantitative approach with the basis of ToT analysis theory from Brown and McNeill. For collecting data, it used an experimental design with EFL students in Kampung Inggris Pare as the objects by involving total 15 participants aged from 18th to 21st years old or late teens. The results show that the language features appearing from the experiment including words (65%), first syllables (24%), last syllables (3%), and letters (6%). The first syllable shows 21% occurrences more than that of the last syllable. There is no identification of stress in the completion of ToT in terms of the appearance of the dominating first syllable. It means that stress does not affect the completion of the ToT, but the frequency of syllables. The other factors that affect ToT in EFL include the mental processes of EFL learners, the sound imitations towards direct communication, and the teacher's role in teaching pronunciation.

Abstract

Indonesian women have undergone significant changes over time, as reflected in the vocabulary of the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). This study aims to describe the representation of Indonesian women in the KBBI and to explain the development of their social and cultural lives over 30 years (1988–2018). The research employs a descriptive-qualitative approach by collecting data through the extraction of entries, definitions, compound words, and proverbs containing the terms “perempuan” (woman) and “wanita” (lady) from two printed editions of the KBBI: the first edition (1988) and the fifth edition (2018). Data analysis was conducted using Sketch Engine to analyze 1,381,578 tokens, and the findings revealed 1,148 collocations and concordances related to the terms “perempuan” and “wanita.” The results indicate that the study of Indonesian women within a linguistic corpus offers insights into their contributions over 30 years across various fields such as religion, military, economy, journalism, health, politics, arts and culture, and beauty. Through corpus-lexicography studies, the portrayal of Indonesian women in the dictionary has challenged patriarchal views that traditionally positioned women as inferior to men. This research highlights the importance of recognizing the representation of women in the social dynamics of Indonesian society. It offers a significant contribution to the broader field of Indonesia lexicography studies by examining how women are represented in dictionary entries.

Abstract

One of the elements in the bridge structure is prestressed concrete. Bridge performance evaluation is needed to determine the repair method for the element if there is a potential for construction failure. This study aims to design a prestressed concrete bridge using midas Civil software. The bridge structure is modelled along with the working loads, which include Dead Load (DL), Super Impose Dead Load (SIDL), and earthquake loads based on SNI 1725:2016 and SNI 2833:2016. This study uses a non-linear time history analysis method (non-linear time history analysis), and design parameters are taken from the NCHRP 44 and 949 references. Midas Civi software is used for the analysis. Design parameters include concrete material strain, steel reinforcement, and drift on lateral retaining elements (bridge pillars) composed of reinforced concrete material. The Terbanggi Besar Interchange Bridge (IC) STA. 139+925 on the Bakauheni – Terbanggi Besar Toll Road in Lampung Province is used as the focus of the study. This study identifies the limits of bridge structural damage during the post-earthquake to determine the performance of the bridge structure. Seven pairs of ground motions were installed, representing the conditions at the bridge site. The results of this study indicate that the performance level of the Terbanggi Besar IC Bridge Structure is at the whole operational performance level. This level describes the condition after receiving the earthquake load. The bridge condition can operate optimally, and the structure is still elastic. This study suggests using similar methods on other bridges to hinder bridge performance and anticipate building failure.

Abstract

Abstract

Machine translation has become an everyday part of society's news consumption patterns. Unfortunately, important news content is poorly mediated by social media, especially on the output of the translation system feature on the site. Therefore, further research is needed on the evaluation of the auto-translate system on social media. This study focuses on the results of linguistic evaluation on the output of social media machine translation in translating news headlines. The data were taken from news coverage by the Reuters channel in the period of September 1st–7th, 2023 and from social media such as Facebook and Twitter. The translation evaluation used linguistic elements consisting of orthography, morphology, lexical, semantic, and syntax. This study found various kinds of linguistic non-equivalence. Orthographic non-equivalence includes punctuation, capitalization, and apostrophes. Morphological non-equivalence in the two systems was found in number concordance, inflection, derivation, and compounding. Lexical errors occur in both systems in the form of no correspondence and missing target words, as well as untranslated words and proper noun. In terms of semantics, both systems had difficulties with polysemy, homonymy, and expression. Finally, syntactic errors occur with missing articles, prepositions, and inappropriate arrangements of syntactic elements.

Abstract

This research examined the level of directness of request strategies found in the movies Ocean’s Eight and Ocean’s Eleven. The topic of request strategies itself is important to study in a way that even though all people use it in their daily lives, the act has been used differently by different people. This paper also aimed to see whether there are differences in request strategies made by male and female characters in terms of politeness strategies. The data used in this study are the utterances spoken by the characters that contain request strategies. The data then were analyzed using the theory proposed by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984), followed by the classification of politeness strategies using the combined theory from Holmes (1995) and Brown and Levinson (1987). The result shows that the male characters used direct strategy (Mood Derivable) the most with 57 occurrences (58%). Meanwhile the female characters preferred using conventionally indirect strategy (Query Preparatory) the most with 18 occurrences (33%). Furthermore, this research found that male characters tended to use Bald-On-Record strategy while requesting (71%) and they also found using Referential Tags (2%) as Holmes (1995) stated that men prefer using the referential tag to check their statement’s accuracy. The strategy that was mostly used by female characters was Bald-On-Record as well (35%).  However, this strategy is balanced out with other strategies which were Affective Tags (31%). Affective Tags are preferred by women to soften their request or potential threat (Holmes, 1995).
