Abstract

Based on the Bali Economic Quarterly Development document for the second quarter of 2021 by BPS, from the beginning of 2020 until now, the Covid-19 pandemic has continued to infect Indonesia. Even the number of new cases affected by this disease is increasing. Based on data from the Covid-19 Handling Task Force, as of June 30, 2021, the number of daily new confirmed cases reached around 21,000. Not only attacking the health sector, but this pandemic has also shattered the joints of the economy. Various government efforts carried out in 2021 have been able to withstand the economic contraction year on year. In the second quarter of 2021, Indonesia's economic growth year on year was recorded at 7.07 percent and was the first positive growth since the second quarter of 2020. In particular, the tourism sector became the sector that experienced the highest growth in the second quarter of 2021. The transportation and accommodation provision business fields, which are the business fields most closely related to the tourism sector, are the two categories that experienced the highest growth, namely by 25.10 percent and 21.58 percent. Among all provinces in Indonesia, Bali can be said to be one of the provinces most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Bali's dependence on foreign tourist visits has caused Bali to still slump in the economy. Since March 2020, the arrival of foreign tourists to Bali has continued to decline. The decline even reached almost 100 percent when compared to the same months the previous year.

Abstract

The main obstacle in making a scientific paper is due to lack of experience in writing and weak knowledge of strategies in technical writing. This workshop aims to provide insight into writing strategies, train using the Mendeley application reference tool, and write citations in journals or scientific papers. This activity was carried out through the Zoom Meeting application by presenting competent resource persons and divided into several stages, starting from participant registration, education stages and direct practice of using applications on Microsoft Office Word. From the training results, ten universities with 150 participants participated, of which 52% of participants were unfamiliar with the Mendeley application. With the evaluation results, 70.47% of participants were able to operate this application. Participants stated that they were very interested in using the simple regression results, the R2 value = 0.9691, and the ease of use of the application obtained an R2 value of 0.9702.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyse the influence of education, health, and unemployment on the Human Development Index (HDI) in East Java, Indonesia. Given the disparities in HDI across regions, this research seeks to identify the extent to which these factors contribute to HDI variations in the province. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative research approach was employed, using secondary data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of East Java for the years 2021 and 2022. The study analysed data from 38 regencies/cities in East Java, using multiple linear regression to examine the impact of education (average years of schooling), health (number of hospitals), and unemployment (percentage of the labour force) on HDI. Findings: The results indicate that education and health have a significant positive impact on HDI, while unemployment has a significant negative effect. The findings confirm that increasing education levels and improving healthcare access contribute positively to human development, whereas higher unemployment rates hinder HDI growth. The coefficient of determination (R²) suggests that these three factors collectively explain a substantial portion of HDI variation in East Java. Research limitations/implications: This study is limited to secondary data analysis and does not consider qualitative factors such as policy effectiveness, governance, and social infrastructure that may also influence HDI. Future research should incorporate qualitative methods and longitudinal data to capture broader determinants of human development. Practical implications: The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers in East Java to focus on education and healthcare improvements while addressing unemployment challenges. Policy recommendations include expanding access to quality education, improving healthcare facilities in underdeveloped areas, and implementing effective employment programs to reduce regional disparities in HDI. Originality/value: This research contributes to the understanding of HDI determinants at the provincial level in Indonesia, offering empirical evidence on the interplay between education, health, and unemployment. The study highlights the need for integrated policy approaches to enhance human development in East Java. Paper type: Research paper
