Abstract

The availability of nitrogen in soil is a crucial factor determining crop productivity. However, the measurement of total nitrogen (N-total) content requires considerable time and cost. Therefore, a fast, accurate, and easy prediction method is needed to support the agricultural development. This study aims to develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model based on the backpropagation algorithm to identify soil N-total content using soil pH, moisture content, and soil resistance as input parameters. The model was trained using the trainbr training function with variations of logsig and tansig activation functions and hidden layer structures of 5–5, 8–8, and 12–12 to obtain the best configuration. The training results indicate that the tansig–tansig combination with 8–8 hidden layer structure achieved the highest performance, with a R2 training of 0.953 and a R2 testing of 0.911. The model was implemented in the form of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) application to facilitate field-level prediction. Validation using 40 testing data samples showed a classification accuracy of 70% and an R² value of 0.932 for nitrogen prediction. The model correctly classified 28 data samples out of the total 40 tested data. These results indicate that the proposed model is capable of predicting soil nitrogen content accurately and reliably.

Abstract

Free fatty acid is an important parameter in determining the quality of crude palm oil. High free fatty acid content can reduce oil quality and cause economic losses in palm oil processing. The conventional method commonly used to determine free fatty acid content is acid-base titration, but this method requires chemicals, laboratory equipment, and relatively long analysis time. This study aimed to design a portable device for rapid detection of free fatty acid content in crude palm oil using pH meter, turbidity meter, and artificial neural network. Oil samples were obtained from oil palm fruitlets with different physical damage levels. Free fatty acid content was measured using titration, while pH and turbidity were used as input variables in the artificial neural network model. The results showed that pH had a relationship with free fatty acid content with a coefficient of determination of 0.3516, while turbidity had a stronger relationship with a coefficient of determination of 0.7636. The best artificial neural network model was obtained using the tansig-logsig-logsig activation function, with R² of 0.9501 and RMSE of 0.6390 in calibration. In the testing stage, the model produced R² of 0.8061 and RMSE of 1.9222. The developed prototype can be used as a rapid method to estimate free fatty acid content in crude palm oil.

Abstract

The increasing demand for energy causes a decrease in the availability of fossil fuels. Biomass from oil palm waste, namely empty oil palm bunches, can be used as an alternative fuel. The torrefaction process converts biomass into environmentally friendly biopellets with high added value. In this study, the calibration of the K-type thermocouple sensor was carried out using Arduino Uno and testing of the automatic pellet torrefaction tool from empty palm oil bunches. This study aims to develop an automatic control system for the pellet torrefaction tool. The design of the automatic torrefaction tool uses a microcontroller with a gas stove energy source. The dimensions of the support frame are the torrefaction tube (24 cm x 28 cm), the servo motor frame (15 cm x 9.5 cm) and the dynamo support frame (26 cm x 6.5 cm). The tool box is square (50 cm x 50 cm). The torrefaction tube has a volume of 2,826 cm3, a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 16 cm. The results showed that the system successfully reached a temperature of 300°C for 30 minutes from the initial temperature. The temperature accuracy test produced an average value of 92.12%. The stability of temperature control also proved to be quite good in achieving the specified setting point. The water content of torrefaction pellets at a temperature of 150-300°C was around 1-2%. The hydrophobicity of torrefaction pellets at a temperature of 250-300°C after being soaked for 24 hours had a clearer color and remained intact.

Abstract

Continuous consumption of fossil fuels can cause fuel prices to rise and potentially cause shortages. One alternative renewable energy that can replace fossil fuels is biomass pellets. The use of manual biomass pellet stoves has constraints in controlling the amount of biomass burned, the amount of heat released by the stove, combustion efficiency, safety, and wasteful use of pellets. The purpose of this study was to develop a biomass stove using an automatic control system as a substitute for gas or electric stoves. This stove has the same principle and working method as gas stoves in general, but the pellet fuel is solid. This technology controls the temperature through the integration of temperature sensors, fan blowers, screw feeders, and heat insulators automatically. The results showed that the stove temperature value with the coefficient of determination value from sensor calibration 1 was R2 = 0.9945, sensor calibration 2 obtained the value R2 = 0.9956, the R2 value in sensor calibration 3 was 0.9946, and sensor calibration 4 obtained the value R2 = 0.9927. In the system response test, the device was able to reach a temperature of 300°C in 450 to 780 seconds. Stability testing for setting points 100°C, 200°C, and 300°C were 0.98, 0.82, and 0.53, respectively. The accuracy of the device was 92%. In the execution speed test, it took 2.5 to 4 seconds for the pellets to enter the fuel furnace.

Abstract

Abstract. Dermiyati, Suharjo R, Telaumbanua M, Ilmiasari Y, Yosita R, Annisa RM, Sari AW, Andayani AP, Yulianti DM. 2019. Population of phosphate solubilizing bacteria in the liquid organic fertilizer created from palm oil bunches and pineapple rhizome. Biodiversitas 20: 3315-3321. Palm oil bunches and pineapple rhizomes are abundant in Indonesia, especially in Lampung Province due to widespread agro-industrial company and they are potential to be used as sources for liquid organic fertilizer. This study was aimed to reveal microbial population within liquid organic fertilizer (LF) which was developed from palm oil bunches (PB) and pineapple rhizome (PR) and their role as phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB). The capability to solubilize phosphate was recorded from the clear zone area around the bacterial colony which was cultivated on Pikovskaya’s agar medium. The LF was prepared in three kinds of conditions, namely aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative an aerobic. Isolation was performed every 3 days until 24 days after incubations. The results showed that microbial population in the LF from PR was significantly higher than those developed from PB. Totally, 791 bacterial isolates were obtained from the LF; 490 isolates were achieved from PR (153 isolates from aerobic, 188 isolates from facultative anaerobic, 149 from anaerobic conditions) and 301 isolates were collected from PB (96 isolates from aerobic, 112 isolates from facultative anaerobic, 93 isolates from anaerobic conditions). In the case of isolates that were gained from PB, 166 isolates (55.15%) showed capability to degrade phosphate and 135 isolates (44.85%) did not show any capability as PSB. As for isolates obtained from PR, 269 isolates (54.90%) had capability to solubilize phosphate, meanwhile, the other 221 isolates (45.10%) did not show any capability to solubilize phosphate. Among166 isolates of PSB from PB, 60 isolates had very low capability, 55 isolates had low capability, 34 isolates had medium capability, 10 isolates had high capability and only 7 isolates had very high capability. Meanwhile, from 269 isolates of PSB obtained from PR, 135 isolates had very low capability to solubilize phosphate, 84 isolates had low capability to solubilize phosphate, 32 had medium capability to solubilize phosphate, 14 isolates had high capability to solubilize phosphate and 4 isolates produced very high capability as PSB. In total, 11 chosen isolates were selected from LF developed from both PB (7 isolates) and PR (4 isolates). Therefore, palm oil bunches and pineapple rhizomes contained PSB that can be used as LF.

Abstract

Abstract. Dermiyati, Suharjo R, Telaumbanua M, Yosita R, Sari AW, Andayani AP. 2020. Abundance and characterization of microorganisms isolated from oil palm empty fruit bunches waste under aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative anaerobic conditions. Biodiversitas 21: 4213-4220. Increased production of palm oil causes an increase in oil palm empty fruit bunches waste, while the utilization of the waste has not been carried out optimally. Oil palm empty fruit bunches contain high cellulose content which promotes the development of various types of bacteria with different characteristics. This study was aimed to determine the abundance and the characterization of bacteria that were isolated from extract suspension of oil palm empty fruit bunches in the form of a local microorganism solution under aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative anaerobic conditions. For isolation, the oil palm empty fruit extract suspension was inoculated on media Plate Count Agar Peptone and bacterial abundance was determined. Various bacterial characterization test included bacterial morphology test in the form of color and shape of macroscopic isolates, gram test using KOH 3%, fermentative oxidative test, soft rot test on potato tubers, hypersensitivity test on tobacco plant leaves, and hypo virulent test which was indicated by the presence of symptoms of disease in cucumber sprouts and indicated in the disease severity index (DSI) was carried out. The results of local microorganism solution isolation from oil palm empty fruit bunches obtained as many as 220 bacterial isolates consisting of 84 isolates in aerobic condition, 68 isolates in anaerobic condition, and 68 isolates in facultative anaerobic condition. The highest bacterial abundance in aerobic conditions was equal to 285.60 x 1010 CFU mL-1. Each bacterial isolate had different characteristics. Most of the characteristics of bacteria were turbid white (34.55%), round (69.55%), gram-positive (76.36%), fermentative (89.55%), softrot negative (71.82%), hypersensitive negative (97.27%), and virulent (74.55%).

Abstract

Abstract. Dermiyati, Suharjo R, Telaumbanua M, Yosita R, Sari AW, Andayani AP. 2023. Antagonist and plant growth promoting potential of indigenous bacteria isolated from oil palm empty fruit bunches. Biodiversitas 24: 1136-1142. The present study aimed to identify of bacteria isolated from the suspension extract of oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) and evaluate their potential against Ganoderma boninense fungus and plant growth promoter. Bacterial isolates from the previous studies were tested for their ability through antagonistic tests. A plant growth promoter test was carried out on the selected isolates with the inhibition percentage criteria > 50%, a clear zone index > 3 in the phosphate solvent test and a clear zone index > 2 in the chitin-reducing test. The identification of bacterial isolates was carried out molecularly using a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis. A total of 220 bacterial isolates were tested, consisting of 84 isolates under aerobic, 68 isolates under anaerobic, and 68 isolates under facultative anaerobic conditions. It was found that the bacteria to antagonize 156 bacterial isolates (70.90%), dissolve phosphate 118 bacterial isolates (53.64%), and none of the bacterial isolates could reduce chitin. A significant increase occurred in root length, root wet weight and root dry weight so that bacterial isolates with isolate codes ASPB1, ANSP14, and SSPB2 had the potential to promote plant growth. These three isolates were identified into the genus Bacillus, namely species of B. velezensis (in aerobic condition), B. paramycoides (in anaerobic condition), and B. tequilensis (in facultative anaerobic condition).
