Abstract

Paracetamol is frequently utilized to alleviate pain and fever due to its pharmacological properties as an analgesic and antipyretic. Consuming paracetamol drugs while self-medication might potentially lead to drug interactions when used with other medications, as well as certain foods and herbs. Moringa oleifera and Caesalpinia sappan are popular herbal plants in Indonesia, commonly used to produce herbal food and drinks. These plants contain flavonoids and phenols, which have the potential to impact the metabolism, effectiveness, and toxicity of medications, including paracetamol. This study investigated alterations in the pharmacokinetic characteristics of paracetamol when co-administered with Moringa oleifera and Caesalpinia sappan. The research utilized a true experimental approach with a posttest-only control group design and animal model study is male Sprague-Dawley rats . The control group was administered an oral dose of 9mg/200g body weight of paracetamol. By contrast, the treatment group of male Sprague-Dawley rats was administered an oral dose of 9mg/200g body weight of paracetamol, combined with a dose of 60mg/200g of Moringa leaf extract and sappan heartwood extract at 294 mg/kg body weight. At 30, 60, 120, 180, and 240 minutes, blood samples were collected from the rats' lateral tail vein. Analyzing the concentration of paracetamol in plasma was conducted using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer set at a wavelength of 244 nm. The study showed that combining sappan heartwood extract with paracetamol resulted in a substantial 453.10% increase in the volume of distribution (Vd) (p<0.05). The administration of Moringa leaf extract decreased a little effect the pharmacokinetic profile of paracetamol, as shown by the statistical analysis of the unpaired t-test (p>0.05).

Abstract

Medinilla speciosa Blume, or parijoto, contains flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, and tannins with pharmacological potential. However, information regarding its safety profile, particularly acute toxicity data, is still very limited, so research is needed to evaluate its safety level. This study aims to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of M. speciosa leaf and fruit extracts in ddY mice. This study used a true experimental design. M. speciosa leaf and fruit extracts were obtained by ultrasonic-assisted extraction with methanol as a solvent. The acute oral toxicity test was conducted with a fixed-dose method at a single dose of 2000 mg/kgBW. Parameters observed for 14 days included mortality, clinical symptoms of toxicity, body weight changes, relative organ weights, and histopathological analysis of the liver and kidneys. The findings indicated an absence of fatalities across all treatment groups. The LD50 values for both extracts were determined to exceed 2000 mg/kgBW, categorising the fruit and leaf extracts as mildly toxic (category 5). Mild toxic symptoms were only observed in the treatment group receiving the fruit extract. Histopathological analysis of the liver and kidneys revealed mild cellular changes that were not statistically significant. Therefore, a single oral administration of M. speciosa fruit and leaf extracts at doses up to 2000 mg/kgBW is relatively safe.

Abstract

Pain is a significant primary complaint among breast cancer patients. The WHO Analgesic Ladder guidelines recommend the use of opioid analgesics as a primary management strategy for cancer pain. However, a periodic evaluation of its effectiveness in specific populations remains necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of opioid analgesic therapy in reducing pain intensity for breast cancer inpatients at Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Jakarta, in 2023. This research was an observational study with a retrospective design. The study sample comprised 58 medical records from breast cancer inpatients who had received opioid analgesic therapy, collected using a total sampling technique. Data analysis was performed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test to compare pain intensity before and after the administration of therapy. The results of the statistical analysis demonstrated a highly significant reduction in pain scores following the administration of opioid analgesic therapy (p < 0.001). The administration of opioid analgesics were significantly effective in the management of pain for breast cancer patients at Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Jakarta.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Hand sanitizer is a hand cleanser which is easy and practical in use. Using hand sanitizer can be an alternative for washing hands if in condition without water and soap. Hand sanitizer is used to clean pathogens on hands. The ability to kill pathogens in hand sanitizers is due to the active substance content in them. In this research, the effectiveness of 2 hand sanitizers on the market was tested. The test aims to see the effect of the active substances in each preparation on the effectiveness of killing pathogens. Testing was carried out using the Kirby Bauer method and on 2 bacterial media, namely Escherichia coli and Shigella sonnei. Hand sanitizer 1 has a composition consisting of 70% ethyl alcohol and 0.5% chlorhexidine. Hand sanitizer 2 has a composition consisting of 55% ethyl alcohol and 18% isopropyl alcohol with a total of 73% alcohol. Based on observations, it was found that hand sanitizer 1 was more effective than hand sanitizer 2. The chlorhexidine content in hand sanitizer 1 increased its effectiveness in killing pathogens.

Abstract

Scabies is a contagious skin infestation that can persist in communities when misconceptions, delayed recognition, and incomplete contact management remain unaddressed. This study described general scabies knowledge among participants of a community education activity at Posyandu Seruni, Depok, and mapped descriptive patterns according to education and health-information source. A descriptive quantitative evaluation was conducted during the activity on 9 February 2026. The broader program used a 20-item true/false questionnaire covering general scabies knowledge, pharmacological treatment, clean and healthy living behavior, and safe supportive herbal use. This manuscript analyzes the five-item general-knowledge domain because these responses were the most consistently verified. Correct answers received one point and were summarized using frequencies, percentages, mean, median, and minimum-maximum scores. Among 51 analyzable responses, the mean score was 68.2% (median 80.0%; range 20.0-100.0%). Thirty-two participants (62.7%) were categorized as having good knowledge, eight (15.7%) adequate knowledge, and 11 (21.6%) poor knowledge. Correctness was highest for transmission through shared clothes, towels, and bed sheets (82.4%) and lowest for rejecting the misconception that scabies affects only people who rarely bathe (49.0%). The highest descriptive mean by education was observed in the Diploma/Bachelor group (80.0%), while social media had the highest descriptive mean by information source (76.0%); cadres/Posyandu were the most common source (56.9%) but had a mean of 62.8%. The findings indicate a fairly good baseline with persistent stigma-related misconceptions. Targeted cadre messages and validated paired pretest-posttest evaluation are recommended; program effectiveness cannot be inferred because paired pretest-posttest data were not available for verification.
