Abstract

This activity aims to manifest Bengkulu University's participation in accelerating the increase in community literacy, especially in the District Bengkulu Utara, Bengkulu Province. Bearing in mind that the results of various surveys and evaluations of the GLN program in North Bengkulu show that the implementation of movement and literacy skills could have been better. This community service is conducted through counseling and focus group discussions to equalize perceptions and form a District Regional Literacy Assistance Team—North Bengkulu to share their role in making GLN a success. The activity was held on August 30, 2022, inviting the Regional Government/Regional Government, District Education Office, Regional Library and Archives Service, Regional Planning and Development Agency (Bappeda), Professional Organizations (MGMP), Academics, and Regional Policy Stakeholders. However, the only participants present were academics, teachers from MGMP elements, and the sub-district head. The analysis results show that strengthening literacy has not become a shared responsibility. Policymakers and stakeholders still think that strengthening literacy skills is the responsibility of schools (teachers) alone. TPLD has not been successfully formed for this activity because parties in the field of literacy have not fully attended it.

Abstract

This study investigated the total phenol content (TPC) and DPPH inhibition of ulvan from Ulva lactuca, along with its supplementation effects on the specific growth rate (SGR) and phenoloxidase (PO) activity of Litopenaeus vannamei. Ulva lactuca samples were processed to obtain four ulvan extracts using different methods such as P-HWE (Polysaccharide-Hot Water Extract), O-HWE (Oligosaccharide-Hot Water Extract), P-A-HWE (Polysaccharide-Acid-Hot Water Extract), and O-A-HWE (Oligosaccharide-Acid-Hot Water Extract). The U. lactuca powder was treated with 80% ethanol overnight, then centrifuged and dried. Depigmented U. lactuca was extracted with water (65°C, 2 hours), and polysaccharides were precipitated with 99% ethanol, yielding P-HWE. P-HWE was heated at 145°C for 4.5 hours to yield O-HWE. Another extraction after depigmentation, using water containing H2O2 and ascorbic acid (65°C, 2 hours), precipitated P-A-HWE, which was dried and heated to yield O-A-HWE. FTIR analysis provided insights into the chemical composition and structural characteristics of ulvan extracts. TPC and DPPH inhibition were measured spectrophotometrically, and PO activity using a colorimetric assay with L-DOPA. Ulvan supplementation in shrimp feed was evaluated for growth and immune response. Results showed significant differences in TPC, DPPH inhibition, and PO activity among extracts, with O-A-HWE having the highest phenol content and DPPH inhibition. Ulvan supplementation significantly influenced the SGR of L. vannamei, with the highest SGR in the O-A-HWE treatment. This study suggests that ulvan extracts, especially O-A-HWE, could be effective natural immunostimulants for enhancing the health and growth of L. vannamei, warranting further research to optimize extraction methods and understand the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from sunlight can damage human skin. The formation of free radicals in skin tissue, sunburn, erythema, and skin tanning are effects that often occur due to exposure to high intensity. Sunscreen cosmetics are commonly used to protect human skin, some use seaweed extract in their formulations. This study was conducted to search for metabolites from Sargassum sp. which have activity as antioxidants and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) photoprotective.  Graded maceration with hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol solvents was done to extract all metabolites according to their polarity. The content of pigments (chlorophyll & carotenoids), total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, and UVR photoprotective are determined by spectrophotometry. Antioxidant activity was analyzed based on the value of inhibition percentage (IC50) against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and  UVR photoprotective was based on the value of sun protection factor (SPF), a percentage of erythema transmission (%Te), and pigmentation transmission (% Tp). The results of the research showed that of the three, hexane extract (H), ethyl acetate extract (Ea), and ethanol extract (Et) all contain carotenoids, but one of them, namely H, did not contain chlorophyll. The largest TPC was found in Et i.e. 15.79 mg of GAE/g. The highest antioxidant activity was achieved by H, followed by Ea with a slight difference in IC50, respectively at 198.61 and 204.12 μg/mL. The highest UVR photoprotective activity was achieved by Ea with an SPF value of 13,480, %Te 4,037, and %Tp 24,316 (at 200 μg/mL). Ethyl acetate extract from Sargassum sp. has been tested as the best antioxidant and UVR photoprotective agent and can be used in sunscreen cosmetic formulations.

Abstract

Mangroves are a rich source of natural antioxidant compounds that can inhibit and reduce tissue damage caused by free radical activity. Currently, cosmetic creams are widely recommended for maintaining skin health and aesthetics, especially in protecting against the harmful effects of free radicals. This study applied mangrove extract as an additive ingredient in a cosmetic cream, serving as an antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, and photoprotective agent. Mangrove samples were collected from the mangrove ecosystem in Tapak Village, Semarang, Indonesia. Three mangrove species were evaluated for their bioactivity, and the species with the highest bioactivity was selected for use in the cream formulation. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were tested using the disc diffusion method, antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH method, and photoprotective activity was determined using UV spectrophotometry, with analysis based on the Mansur mathematical equation. The cream was evaluated for its characteristics, including spreadability, homogeneity, sensory properties, pH, sun protection factor (SPF), phytochemical content, stability, and microbial contamination. An in vivo was conducted to assess the cream’s effectiveness on white mice. Results indicated that Avicennia marina leaf extract exhibited the highest bioactivity compared to the other two species, Rhizophora mucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. Consequently, A. marina leaf extract was selected as the active additive ingredient in the cream formulation. Characterization tests demonstrated that the cream was stable and met standard criteria for quality. The in vivo analysis revealed that the mangrove leaf extract cream significantly prevented epidermal thinning, reduced neutrophil counts, and preserved fibroblast numbers.

Abstract

Phyrella is a genus of sea cucumbers that holds significant economic value and is widely exported for human consumption. Despite its importance, knowledge regarding the species diversity of Phyrella in Indonesian waters, particularly in Demak Waters, remains limited. This study aims to identify the Phyrella species found in this region through morphological analysis of spicules. The identification process involved examining the spicules present in the calcareous ring and various body parts, including the anterior, posterior, ventral, and dorsal regions. Spicules were observed using a light microscope at 100x magnification after dissolving body tissues with a sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution to isolate their structure. The findings revealed four distinct spicule shapes: buttony, mensal, barbed, and barbed wire rod. These spicule characteristics are essential in distinguishing Phyrella species. Based on these morphological features, the sea cucumber species found in Demak Waters was identified as Phyrella fragilis. The results contribute to taxonomic studies and provide insights into the ecological role of Phyrella fragilis in marine ecosystems. Furthermore, this species has potential applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries due to its rich nutritional content and bioactive compounds. Understanding its morphology and distribution can aid conservation efforts and sustainable resource management.

Abstract

This study discusses several thoughts of Critical Legal Studies as a branch of thought in the field of law. This study uses conceptual and theoretical approach, and several opinions from law scholars are discussed. The Critical Legal Studies thinkers criticize the existing legal order, which they regard as a liberal order. In a liberal setting, Critical Legal Studies views law along with government entities in a broad sense, which form and implement law, as being subordinated to the interests of business actors. Thus, it will be difficult for the law and the government to truly be neutral and objective.
