Abstract

This study aims to compare the ecological conditions of coral reefs and reef fish communities between the shallow waters of Karimunjawa, Jepara (Java Sea) and North Bali waters (Buleleng Regency). The research was conducted at 6 stations (2 stations in Karimunjawa and 4 stations in Bali) with different depths. The coral reef observation method used Underwater Photo Transect (UPT), while reef fish observation was conducted using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. Results showed that coral reef conditions in general were not significantly different between locations. However, the abundance, biomass and biodiversity of reef fishes were significantly different between Karimunjawa and Bali. Further analysis showed that coral growth form (lifeform) was a strong predictor of reef fish community structure, and related to reef fish trophic groups (corallivores, herbivores and carnivores). The abundance and diversity of reef fish species were not only influenced by live coral cover, but also by the complexity of habitat structure. These findings highlight the importance of local oceanographic and topographic factors in supporting reef fish abundance and diversity.

Abstract

This activity aims to manifest Bengkulu University's participation in accelerating the increase in community literacy, especially in the District Bengkulu Utara, Bengkulu Province. Bearing in mind that the results of various surveys and evaluations of the GLN program in North Bengkulu show that the implementation of movement and literacy skills could have been better. This community service is conducted through counseling and focus group discussions to equalize perceptions and form a District Regional Literacy Assistance Team—North Bengkulu to share their role in making GLN a success. The activity was held on August 30, 2022, inviting the Regional Government/Regional Government, District Education Office, Regional Library and Archives Service, Regional Planning and Development Agency (Bappeda), Professional Organizations (MGMP), Academics, and Regional Policy Stakeholders. However, the only participants present were academics, teachers from MGMP elements, and the sub-district head. The analysis results show that strengthening literacy has not become a shared responsibility. Policymakers and stakeholders still think that strengthening literacy skills is the responsibility of schools (teachers) alone. TPLD has not been successfully formed for this activity because parties in the field of literacy have not fully attended it.

Abstract

Litopenaeus vannamei has emerged in the aquaculture industry. Production consistency, nutrition, and disease management play critical roles, particularly the digestive enzymes such as trypsin. This study assesses Ulvan, an immunostimulant from Ulva lactuca, on shrimp trypsin activity. Trypsin has been found to significantly enhance the activity of hemocyanin phenoloxidase, a crucial component of humoral immunity. This study aims to evaluate the potency of ulvan related to trypsin as an immunostimulant agent, extracted from Ulva sp.  Ulvan, extracted using various methods (P-HWE, O-HWE, P-A-HWE, and O-A-HWE), was evaluated using different doses of (0 g kg-1 (Control), 0.75 g kg-1 (ULV-0.75), 1.50 g kg-1 (ULV-1.50), and 3.00 g kg-1 (ULV-3.00) of feed). The O-A-HWE exhibited the fastest and highest increase in trypsin activity on day 4, surpassing the control on days 2, 3, 7, and 8. The P-HWE, O-HWE, and P-A-HWE also showed significant changes in trypsin activity compared to the control on specific days. Meanwhile, trypsin activity in Ulvan-fed shrimp did not significantly differ from the control on days 0 and 1. The differences emerged on day 2 and 3, notably between ULV-1.50 g kg−1 and ULV-0.75 g kg−1. The ULV-3.00 g kg−1 showed no significant difference from ULV-1.50 g kg−1. O-A-HWE demonstrated significant differences in trypsin activity compared to other Ulvan extracts, suggesting its potential to enhance shrimp health.

Abstract

Spanish mackerel dried skin is commonly used in chips, crackers, and empek-empek products. However, its potential for transformation into value-added products such as collagen hydrolysate still needs to be explored. Processing this material using papain enzyme offers an efficient method to enhance its economic value, owing to its high yield and effectiveness. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum concentration of papain enzyme and soaking time for the hydrolysis of dried mackerel skin collagen based on the characteristics of dried mackerel skin collagen. This study applied a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: papain enzyme concentration (1% and 2%) and soaking time (12 and 24 h). The results indicated that the interaction between enzyme concentration and soaking time significantly affected key parameters, including hydrolysis degree, whiteness, protein content, viscosity, gel strength, melting point, solubility, and foaming ability, whereas yield, moisture, ash, fat, pH, and zeta potential were unaffected. Optimal conditions were achieved with 2% papain enzyme and 24-hour soaking time, resulting in a 2.30% yield, 35.62% hydrolysis degree, 77.73% white degree, 6.94% moisture, 1.44% ash, 95.35% protein, 2.33% lipid, 6,13cp viscosity, 46.64 gBloom gel strength, 14.67OC melting point, 5.83 pH, 2.47mV zeta potential, 82.00% solubility, and 31.67% foaming ability. These results highlight the significant potential of Spanish mackerel dried skin as a raw material for collagen hydrolysate production, supporting its application in developing high-value fishery by-products and promoting sustainable economic development.

Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem is characterized by high biodiversity and the production of various secondary metabolites with potential bioactive properties, making it a promising source of natural cosmetic ingredients. Phytochemical screening was carried out to detect the present of tannins, saponins, steroids, alkaloids, and flavonoids. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using disc diffusion method, while antioxidant activity was assessed through the DPPH assay. Seven species were identified in this study, namely Exoecaria agallocha, Laguncularia racemosa, Nypa fructicans, Bruguiera cylindrical, Amyema anisomeres, Ipomoea pes-caprae, and Acrostichum aureum. Phytochemical analysis revealed that saponins and tannins were present in most species, whereas alkaloids and flavonoids were specific to certain taxa. None of the tested extracts exhibited antibacterial activity against Eschericia coli. Antioxidant evaluation showed that Acrostichum aureum exhibited very strong activity (IC50 = 38,3 ppm), while Ipomoea pes-caprae and Laguncularia racemosa demonstrated strong antioxidant potential, and the remaining species ranged from weak to very weak activity. These findings indicate considerable variation in secondary metabolite composition and antioxidant capacity among mangrove species from Merauke, and suggest that Acrostichum aureum could serve as a promising natural source of antioxidants for the development of plant-based cosmetic formulations.
