Abstract

Globally, habitat loss, deforestation, and climate change are mostly caused by land cover changes (LCC). The amount of land covered by trees has had a major impact on global warming and climate change. Increasing the amount of land cover helps to mitigate climate change and global warming. This study aims to investigate the changes in land cover and carbon storage in Plawangan Hill, Indonesia, over four years (2009, 2013, 2017, and 2023). The study site was defined as a conservation area that has been periodically impacted both directly and indirectly by volcanic eruptions. Images from Landsat 7 and 8 were used to collect data. Additionally, land cover changes were assessed using the forest canopy density (FCD Mapper) model, which was then utilized to quantify the carbon storage of the research site. The findings demonstrated fluctuations in land cover changes between 2009 and 2023. Additionally, changes in land cover have a direct impact on changes in carbon storage. The age of the trees, type of vegetation, succession stage, and history of eruptions were the variables that were apparent to be the main causes of these changes.

Abstract

Mount Merapi National Park (TNGM) is one of the active volcanos in Indonesia. It has past volcano eruption history since 1911 up to date. Specifically, Plawangan Hill is a part of the TNGM recently designated as Geo-heritage and has experienced volcano eruption indirectly and directly. Additionally, since the Indonesian government designates Plawangan Hill as a Geological Heritage (Geo-Heritage) location, it is crucial to determine its geological features and how they relate to the development of the vegetation there as the study’s objectives. A field survey and a soil laboratory examination were conducted to obtain the data. As a result, Plawangan Hill’s DEM was classified from very low to very high classes, while the DSM was categorized from flat to very steep slopes. Further, the results demonstrated that the pH of the soil was typically somewhat acidic (5.93–6.54). While the soil’s nitrogen content was found to be low to medium, both phosphorus and potassium levels were typically very low. The carbon-nitrogen ratio was generally categorized into the medium, while the organic C ranged from low to medium (1.44% to 3.22%). The soil’s N total, K total, organic matter, carbon content, and C-N ratio increased by the erupted material age. Additionally, it was discovered that the vegetation growth was excellent in indirect (IA) and directly affected (DA) conditions, as indicated by their diameter at breast height (Dbh) and height (H). The correlation between soil characteristics and vegetation growth differed in indirectly affected (IA) and directly affected (DA) areas. As a result, the study found that volcanic materials significantly contributed to Plawangan Hill’s soil characteristics and vegetation growth. Furthermore, this study’s findings were highly beneficial because they were one of the primary explanations for why Plawangan Hill was designated a Geo-heritage site.

Abstract

Makassar coastal area has experienced rapid development and has shown various negative impacts from groundwater overexploitation, such as seawater intrusion. This study aimed to assess seawater intrusion based on geochemical and isotopic data in the Makassar coastal area. The research was carried out by field measurement and taking the groundwater samples to the laboratory for geochemical and isotope tests. Geochemical analysis of seawater intrusion was based on TDS, EC, Cl-, Simpson ratio, Ca enrichment, BEX, Na/Cl ratio, and the piper trilinear diagram typer of water. Isotope analysis of seawater intrusion is based on comparing oxygen and deuterium isotopic data from groundwater samples with seawater, river, and rainwater. The results showed that some areas near the sea indicated seawater intrusion in both the semi-unconfined and unconfined aquifers. The indicated seawater intrusion spread in the north Tallo, Mamajang, and Tamalate subdistricts.

Abstract

Diesel fuel pollutants contain toxic hydrocarbons dominated by aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon pollutants can be degraded in an environmentally friendly manner through bioremediation using hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria, i.e., Pseudomonas aeruginosa B031, which harbors the alkB gene that encodes an alkane hydroxylase that degrades alkane chains in hydrocarbons. This study compared the ability and efficiency of P. aeruginosa B031 to degrade diesel pollutants in a batch system and a continuous system using a column bioreactor, as well as the expression of alkB. P. aeruginosa B031 could more efficiently degrade diesel fuel in a continuous system in a column bioreactor than in the batch system. The concentrations of phenol, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and biological oxygen demand in the column bioreactor underwent a greater decrease than those in the batch system, namely 1.5-fold, 1.7-fold, 1.4-fold, and 1.3-fold, respectively. The decrease in these concentrations was followed by changes in functional groups, as shown via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The number of bacteria and the concentration of exopolysaccharide increased in the column bioreactor by 4-fold and 2.3-fold more than the increase in the batch system. The ability of P. aeruginosa B031 to degrade diesel fuel in the column bioreactor was also demonstrated by the higher expression of alkB than that in the control.

Abstract

On May 26, 2006, an earthquake of moment magnitude (Mw) 6.3 occurred in Yogyakarta. The damages found in Bantul were predicted to be caused by liquefaction. Moreover, liquefaction symptoms were found, such as a sand boil and lateral spreading. It inferred that the damage was controlled by the amplification factors from young volcanic sediments that are redeposited and altered volcaniclastics from the active Mount Merapi. This study compared subsurface conditions based on two field investigation methods (SPT and Shear Wave Velocity) and determined the liquefaction potential by considering groundwater and the region's seismicity. Several equations to represent the N-SPT and Vs data were also analyzed to obtain the most fitted equation. As a result, several equations used in this study were inadequate to properly correlate N-SPT and Vs. A comparison of safety factor values indicated that the liquefaction potential in the studied area on the Vs-based method is lower than the result from the SPT-based method.

Abstract

Groundwater is the primary clean water source for most Indonesian society. The increasing use of groundwater is inevitable due to the rapid development in Indonesia, particularly in Yogyakarta. Shallow aquifers are vulnerable to contamination due to anthropogenic influences. Therefore, this research aims to determine shallow groundwater's physicochemical and chemical characteristics on the southern slope of Mount Merapi, specifically focusing on nitrate and chloride concentrations in groundwater. This research collected monthly data from eighteen dug wells or springs and rainfall data in the study area during the rainy and dry seasons from August 2022 to January 2023. The analyzing sample used argentometry to determine chloride concentration and ultraviolet spectrophotometric to determine nitrate concentration in Yogyakarta Environmental Health and Disease Control Technical Center (BBTKLPP) laboratory. The physicochemical parameters were tested directly in the field using Hanna instruments. The results indicate that a significant portion of shallow groundwater has high nitrate concentrations, corresponding to the growing settlements in the research area. Furthermore, according to the comparison graph between nitrate and chloride, the nitrate source was indicated as anthropogenic. Fecal matter from sanitation practices using septic tanks will likely influence the nitrate increase.

Abstract

The geographical condition, which is relatively difficult to reach, electricity and infrastructure has not been maximized, making the electrification ratio in Pacitan Regency one of the lowest on the island of Java at 65%. Pacitan Regency has a promising renewable energy potential, but it has not been maximized for the benefit of the residents. One of them is a solar power plant. If used properly, this alternative energy source can be a solution to meet energy needs in remote areas. As part of the Government's efforts to achieve the new and renewable energy (RE) target of 23% by 2025, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has issued Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 26 of 2021 concerning Connected Rooftop Solar Power Plants. On the Electric Power Network, the Holder of a Business License for the Provision of Electric Power for Public Interest (IUPTLU). This Ministerial Regulation is a refinement of the previous regulation to improve the governance and economics of PV, especially PV Rooftop. This regulation is also a step to respond to the existing dynamics and facilitate the public's desire to obtain electricity from renewable energy sources, as well as the desire to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This study was conducted to calculate the optimum potential of rooftop photovoltaic power plants in the official residence of the Pacitan Regency Government as an alternative energy source to supply the electricity system from the official residence. This simulation was carried out using the System Advisor Model (SAM) software, considering the technical and economic aspects. Where the economic calculation has two scenarios, namely the profit value based on the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 26 of 2021 and the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 49 of 2018 with total energy produced of 13012 kWh / year with a total of 20 modules installed with a slope of 20o facing north and 1 Inverter and an LCOE value of Rp. 1231.31/kWh, and an NPV of Rp. 117,579,325.50.

Abstract

Girimulyo sub-district is one of the areas with high landslide risk in Kulon Progo Regency. On March 12, 2018, a landslide occurred in the area. Seven families were affected, and landslide material blocked the road. This study aims to determine slope conditions through electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and slope stability analysis using the limit equilibrium method. Based on the interpretation of the ERT profile, it is known that a layer with a resistivity value of <5 Ωm is wet clay; 5-15 Ωm is wet silt; 15-150 Ωm is silt-to-sand; and >150 Ωm is bedrock. The sliding surface is thought to be at the boundary between the wet clay and wet silt layers. The interpretation of the ERT profile is confirmed by data from laboratory tests on soil samples. Slope stability analysis was carried out using ERT profile interpretation and soil sample laboratory test data. The slope stability analysis results show that both the slopes that experienced landslides in 2018 and those that did not experience landslides were stable when the water table was 3 meters deep. However, the landslide slopes are in critical condition as the groundwater level rises, while the non-landslide slopes are remains stable.

Abstract

Seawater intrusion is a major concern in coastal urban areas like Makassar, where groundwater is a crucial water source. This study assesses seawater intrusion using multiple approaches, including geological and hydrogeological analysis, Cl/Br vs. Cl graphical analysis, recharge area land use, groundwater usage, and previous seawater intrusion vulnerability mapping. From 20 groundwater samples, five were categorized as brackish and then analyzed using these six perspectives. Geologically, two shallow wells in Mariso and Manggala contain brackish water due to trapped marine sediments, supported hydrogeologically by local groundwater flow patterns indicating past shallow seawater traps, while wells in Tallo show no such indications. Cl/Br vs. Cl graphical analysis classifies the shallow well in Tallo as Seawater, one in Manggala as Brine Basin, and three others as landfill leachate, suggesting anthropogenic contamination. Most groundwater recharge areas are residential and built-up, limiting infiltration and contributing to seawater intrusion. Groundwater usage is highest in Tallo, moderately high in Mariso and Manggala, and moderate in Ujung Pandang. Vulnerability mapping places the Tallo well in a high-risk zone, the Mariso well in a low-risk zone, and the Manggala well in a non-vulnerable area. Across these perspectives, only one sample in the Tallo District is confirmed to experience seawater intrusion.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Disasters are events that threaten people's lives and can cause loss of life, property, as well as environmental and psychological impacts. Landslides, as one of the natural disasters, occur due to slope instability triggered by geological and hydrological factors. Ngargosari Village, Kecamatan Loano, Purworejo Regency, has a geographical condition of steep hills with an altitude of ±450 meters above sea level which makes it prone to landslides. This research aims to increase community resilience to landslides through a community-based mitigation approach and appropriate technology in the KOSABANGSA program. The method used includes preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. Mitigation activities include socialization, geological survey, vulnerability mapping, installation of early warning system (EWS), evacuation signs, preparation of evacuation fixed procedures, and implementation of evacuation simulation. Evaluation results show an increase in physical resilience through the availability of evacuation routes and EWS that function in real-time. The community's capacity resilience also increased, as shown by the average score of disaster understanding at 78% and infrastructure understanding at 86%. EWS implementation and participatory education proved effective in improving community preparedness. A collaborative approach between academics, village government, and residents is a key factor in building a resilient and sustainable mitigation system
