Abstract

In recent years, online mass media has made a significant contribution to explaining events and how these events are interpreted and understood by the public. One of them is the incident regarding the case of public officials with a lifestyle of hedonism (those familiar with corrupt behavior). The purpose of this study is to examine the image of officials built by the Tirto.id mass media in an editorial on "hedonic officials.” The analysis in this study uses qualitative methods. Data analysis was carried out descriptively. This type of research is content analysis with the data source in the form of news text produced and published by the mass media Tirto.id on March 15, 2023. The discourse is entitled "Hedonic Officials: The Seed of Corruption That Butchers the Prosperity of the People.” Data collection techniques were carried out by reading discourses and noting excerpts of sentences related to research problems. The research procedure was carried out using three stages (methods) suggested by Norman Fairclough: description, interpretation, and explanation. The validity of the data was carried out by testing referential validity and intra-rater reliability (observing and reading data carefully and persistently). The results of the analysis show that the Tirto.id mass media gives a negative image to several public officials, especially the Directorate General of Taxes (DGT). This negative image can be seen from the use of words that have a negative connotation and contain controversy. Public officials are described as figures who have a hedonistic attitude that is often close to corrupt behavior, entities that are rotten, dirty, disgusting, dilapidated, damaging, and/or butcher people's prosperity

Abstract

Language learning in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0 era is required to produce students with 21st-century skills by increasing the capacity and capability of using technology in learning. Technology-based learning, known as cybergogy, is a continuity of learning paradigms that previously applied the principles of pedagogy and andragogy in the learning process. As a new concept in learning, cybergogy is essential in improving 21st-century skills in the form of the 6Cs (Citizenship, Character, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Communication, Creativity, and Collaboration). Enhancing communication skills through cybergogy-based learning is a novelty that has not been done much and has become the focal point of research. This research, part of development research using the ADDIE model, employed a quasi-experimental design conducted in 3 senior high schools in Yogyakarta, representing one school per category, namely the lower, medium, and high categories, based on UTBK scores. A non-equivalent control group design involving an experimental and control class was applied. The results of this study, which showed a significant improvement in students' communication skills, especially speaking aspects, through blended learning, are of great significance. Therefore, it can be concluded that cybergogy-based language learning has proven effective in improving students' communication skills through blended learning.

Abstract

Academic writing has been a widely substantial course in higher education as it plays a vital role in cultivating students’ academic writing skills. Drawing on qualitative descriptive study, this study aims to explore the fundamental requirements for academic writing to base the creation of an effective learning framework. Data consisted of teaching materials, semester learning plan (SLP), assessment tools, and guidelines for academic writing from three universities in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Findings reveal that learning materials and the SLP have both strengths and weaknesses. Despite these, there is diversity in learning and assessment methods. Adopted teaching methods encompass project-based learning, problemsolving, and lectures, while learning assessment includes portfolio techniques, project assessment, and written exams. These findings provide insight into the imperative of academic writing in the academic setting. This serves as a basis for the development of more effective learning methods. Thus, the proposed model for academic writing adopts a project-based approach to improve students’ writing by integrating indigenous wisdom to promote students' character development.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the construction of relational values in political news published by Republika online media, focusing on identifying linguistic markers of relational values, examining how they construct bias and representation of political actors, and explaining their ideological function in shaping public perception. The analysis employs Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), with relational values in vocabulary selection as the central focus at the textual level. Methodologically, this study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with data consisting of political news articles published by Republika between December 2023 and January 2024, collected through reading and note-taking techniques, then reduced, coded, and classified into four relational value categories (trust, respect, cooperation, and commitment). The findings indicate that vocabulary choices systematically construct political actors’ images: trust is represented through lexical items that reinforce credibility; respect emerges through honorifics and naming strategies that strengthen legitimacy; cooperation is conveyed through lexical choices emphasizing synergy; and commitment appears through expressions of promises and future-oriented political intentions. These results affirm that vocabulary selection in media texts is not neutral but carries ideological functions that shape political representation and readers’ interpretive orientation. Therefore, this research offers conceptual and empirical contributions to language and political discourse studies and reinforces the urgency of critical media literacy in the public sphere.
