Abstract

This research was intended to find out whether there was a significant difference of students’ reading achievement in comprehending authentic material taught through information transfer and translation technique and to find out which of the two techniques was more effective for teaching reading of authentic material. This research took place in SMPN 1 Natar. It consists of two classes of the third grader. Control group pre-test post-test design was applied in this research. The instrument used in this research was reading test in the form of 25 multiple choices. Then, the data were analyzed by using Independent t-test with Statistically Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 15.0. Based on the result of the test, the significant difference was determined by  p0.05. The t-test revealed that the result was significant (p=0.012) in which (t-value t-table), 2.598 2.000. It indicated that there was a significant difference in students’ reading achievement before and after being taught through information transfer and translation technique. Besides, information transfer was more effective than translation in increasing students’ reading comprehension achievement because it helped students to comprehend the text given by using self-questioning strategy. Thus, it is concluded that information transfer technique can be applied and recommended as a reference to teach English in reading skill.  Keywords: authentic material, information transfer, reading achievement, translation PERBANDINGAN

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the influences of three variables (motivation learning attitude, and learning source implementation toward students’ achievement in English at MAN 1 Metro. The method used in this research is ex-post de facto involving three independent variables and one dependant variable. The population is all the students of XI class, social program in MAN 1 Metro. The sample is taken by using proportional random sampling system involving 59 students which 50% of 157 populations. The result of research and data analysis shows that there are significant correlations between the three independent variables and the dependant variable. The data show that (1) there is a significant correlation between students’ attitude toward the lesson, and their English Achievement (correlation coefficient (ryx1) 0,694). (2) There is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and their English Achievement (correlation coefficient (ryx2) 0,765).  (3) There is a significant correlation between the implementation of learning resource and the students English Achievement (correlation coefficient (ryx3) 0,548). Therefore, it is suggested that the teachers raise students’ motivation and improve their attitude toward learning English. Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether there was statiscallysignificant difference of the dental sounds /θ/ /ð/ and palato-alveolar sounds /tʃ/ /dʒ/ between the pre and the post tests after the implementation of kids song and and to find out whether there was a statiscally significant difference on students’ ability in pronouncing voiceless and voiced sounds of dental sounds /θ/ /ð/ and palato-alveolar sounds /tʃ/ /dʒ/. This research was conducted at the first-grade students of MTs DarurrahmanPerintis in the academic year 2022/2023 in the first semester. Class VII A which consist of 20 students was the sample of this research. This research was conducted through quantitative approuch by using one group pre-test post-test design. Pronunciation test was used as the instrument of this research. The data was taken from pretest and posttest in the form of scores from pronunciation tests that had been recorded and analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test. The result presented that students’ mean score of pretest was 26.24 and the mean score of posttest was 73.12. Moreover, the improvement of students’ mean scores from pretest to posttest was 46.88 and the p-value of significant level was 0.000 which was lower than 0.05. It proved that H1 is accepted that there was a statiscallysignificant difference of the dental sounds /θ/ /ð/ and palato-alveolar sounds /tʃ/ /dʒ/ between the pre and the post tests after the implementation of kids song. Moreover, it also can be found that students’ ability in pronouncing voiceless and voiced sounds of dental sounds /θ/ /ð/ and palato-alveolar sounds /tʃ/ /dʒ/ at the significant level 0.000 (0.05) both in voiceless sounds /θ/ /tʃ/ and voiced sounds /ð/ /dʒ/. It also can be seen that the mean difference of voiceless sounds /θ/ /tʃ/ were greater than voiced sounds /ð/ /dʒ/ (3.1752.4375). Based on the results. It can be inferred that the use of kids song is effective in teaching pronunciation of dental sounds /θ/ /ð/ and palato-alveolar sounds /tʃ/ /dʒ/.
