Based on the results of questionnaires filled out by 421 students, it is known that, first, in relation to students’ lack on English subject, this study focuses on the competence of language skills and students' difficulties in mastering the four English skills. Most students assessed their English language skills competence at moderate level. Listening and speaking skills are assessed as the first priority followed by writing and reading skills. However, the research findings also show that speaking skills seem to be the most difficult skills for them apart from weak grammar and low vocabulary mastery. Second, related to the students’ wants on English subject, the preferred language skills are reading followed by speaking, listening and writing. Third, related to necessity on English subject, learning activities that students need to function effectively is to combine English and Indonesian as a medium in delivering material. Most students also think that learning English is better in large groups under the supervision of lecturers. Furthermore, feedback, revision, and reflection are very important aspects for developing the ability to self-regulate learning. Therefore, students prefer to be corrected immediately by the lecturer when they make mistakes. To achieve learning effectiveness, students also expect the integration of a variety of activities and the development of learning materials.

Abstract

The low levels of literacy and numeracy in Indonesian villages present significant challenges to social and economic development. Village libraries, which should serve as literacy hubs, often lack sufficient book collections to support community education. This community service activity aims to enhance literacy in Jatimulya village, Kuningan, West Java through the provision of reading materials and the organization of the village library. The methods used include setting up a reading garden, distributing books, and conducting literacy activities. The activity was attended by 18 elementary school students who showed high enthusiasm during storytelling sessions and reading exercises. The results indicate that appropriate book provision and literacy programs can increase students' reading interest and literacy skills. With better library facilities and ongoing support, village libraries have great potential to become effective literacy centers that support educational empowerment in rural areas. This activity successfully achieved its goals and had a positive impact on the community, particularly in fostering a literacy culture among children.

Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the impact of integrating local culture-based website applications on improving the reading comprehension skills of ninth-grade students. Method: Conducted as classroom action research, the study involved 114 students and one English teacher as a collaborator. Over five meetings, students engaged with culturally relevant texts designed to enhance their comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills. The research included a pre-test, three treatment sessions using the website application, and a post-test, followed by a questionnaire on students' perceptions of the application. Results: The findings show that the average post-test score rising from 55.6 to 73.4. The decrease in the standard deviation from 12.8 to 9.5 suggests a reduction in performance disparities. A paired sample t-test confirmed the statistical significance of these gains (t(114) = 12.67, p < 0.001), and the large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.62) indicates a substantial impact of the intervention. The students' responses to the questionnaire reflected a positive attitude toward the use of the application, highlighting its effectiveness and cultural relevance. Novelty: These results suggest that incorporating local cultural content into educational tools can significantly enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
