Abstract

Increasing the Interest of the Gentungan Village Millennial Generation in the Agricultural Sector through Smart Farming Socialization and Training. Gentungan Village, as a pioneer village for organic rice, is currently facing problems in the availability of human resources in the future. This can be seen from the low interest and involvement of young people, especially the millennial generation in Gentungan Village, in the agricultural sector. The purpose of this community service is to increase the interest of the millennial generation in Gentungan Village to engage in the agricultural sector through socialization activities and smart farming training. This service activity was carried out in July - September 2022 involving the active participation of 20 millennial generations in Gentungan Village. This community service activity consists of several activities, namely 1) counseling on the role of youth in agriculture, 2) socialization on smart farming and success stories, 3) training on smart farming and 4) evaluation of the results of socialization and training on smart farming. This community service activity had a positive impact as shown by 90% of participants increasing their knowledge of agriculture 4.0, 60% of participants increasing their knowledge of business opportunities in agriculture 4.0, 15% of participants increasing their positive views of the agricultural sector and increasing participant skills in operating fertilizer drones. This activity also initiated the formation of a group of young farmers Taruna Tani Gentungan Village which in the future is expected to continue agricultural development in Gentungan Village.

Abstract

Forest resources play an essential role in supporting the livelihoods of forest farming households. Households in this area depend heavily on forest-related activities as a source of income and livelihood. However, forest farming households are often faced with various challenges and uncertainties due to climate change, market fluctuations, limited access to land ownership, lack of infrastructure and technological support, and developments in socio-economic conditions that change the values and structure of people's lives. This study is a preliminary survey as an initial process of collecting information and data before carrying out the primary research. This preliminary survey aims to gain an initial understanding of the diversity of forest farmer household livelihoods. Data was collected through a rapid study of 30 households in Gandu Village. Then, data was identified according to information needs and planning the next steps. The results of this study show that forest farming households in Gandu Village diversify their livelihoods in both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. The diversity value in the non-agricultural sector shows an average figure of 2.1, which means that each household does not only depend on one source of income. However, they will diversify the number of livelihoods in the amount of 2.1 to meet their household's living needs. The findings of this preliminary survey can become initial data and contribute to further research.

Abstract

Madiun Regency, as one of the districts that makes agriculture the foundation of regional development, empowers farmers by supporting the existence of the Madiun Millennial Farmer Community (PMM). Hopefully, this community will strengthen young people's confidence in farming. Millennial farmers' strong self-efficacy can be obtained from observing the success of other farmers. Farmers will also become more confident if they often receive praise, advice and suggestions from extension workers and other farmers. This research aims to describe and analyze the influence of vicarious experience and social persuasion on the self-efficacy of millennial farmers in Madiun Regency. The research method uses a quantitative approach, which is assisted by questionnaires, surveys, observations, interviews, documentation, and recording. Data analysis used multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS IBM 25. Abstract

Millennial farmers become superior and competitive human resources as determinants of the progress of agricultural development. Millennial farmers must be adaptive to digitalization technology and innovation and environmentally friendly cultivation techniques to face agricultural development, including climate change challenges. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) behavior is the strategic effort of millennial farmers as an approach to dealing with the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector, as well as efforts by the agricultural industry to reduce its impact on climate change through efficient management of crops, land and soil, and water. The management is based on three pillars of CSA: 1) Increasing agricultural productivity and income, 2) Improving adaptation and resilience to climate change, and 3) Reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This study aims to analyze CSA implementation behavior based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by examining the direct and indirect effects of attitude variables, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions. These variables are measured by integrating TPB with the CSA context. The research sample was 198 respondents of Millennial Farmer Ambassadors and Andalan Farmer Ambassadors in West Java Province, conducted in 2023. This research uses a quantitative approach with the Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) method to analyze complex models with many variables—data collection techniques using questionnaire instruments that have been valid and reliable. The results showed that attitude, perceived behavioral control, and intention significantly influence behavior both directly and indirectly through intention (p-value < α 0.05). Meanwhile, subjective norms do not substantially affect behavior directly or indirectly through intention (p-value > α 0.05). So, it is necessary to develop interventions that strengthen the formation of positive intentions and the need for practical support for subjective norms related to CSA implementation behavior in millennial farmers.

Abstract

Cyber extension web facilitates agriculture extension staffs to leverage this media communication system to strengthen their capability and capacity for improving extension services. Through the Technology Acceptance Model approach, this study examines the use of cyber extension and the affect of self-efficacy, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, subjective norms, and attitude toward usage on cyber extension usage by agriculture extension staffs in Central Java Province. This study was conducted from April to May 2023 using a quantitative approach. The population includes agriculture extension staffs within the scope of the Central Java Provincial Agriculture Office. Sampling was done using convenience sampling, with 377 agriculture extension staffs spreading across 28 districts and five cities. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study showed that use of the cyber extension web can be categorized as low-level; meanwhile, self-efficacy, perceived ease of use, subjective norms, and attitudes towards positive use were relatively high. Cyber extension usage was directly affected by perceived ease of use, subjective norms, and attitude toward usage. As a recommendation, interventions are needed to improve and continue to update content variations. It is necessary to develop and optimize the use of cyber extension at the provincial and or district level.

Abstract

Farmer competence is the ability of farmers to think, behave, and act in managing farming businesses. The competence can involve various stakeholders (actors) and types of farmers’ competencies. Therefore, this study investigates the role of stakeholders in farmers' competencies and assesses the rank of farmers’ competencies in Magelang Regency (highland) and Pati Regency (lowland). Both regions have a significant number of millennial farmers in Central Java Province. The sample for this study was 12 people (institutions) selected using purposive sampling. They provided their perceptions of farmer competencies through in-depth interviews. The interviews were conducted during July–August 2023. MACTOR and AHP methods were applied to measure the stakeholders’ role and rank the types of farmer competencies. The findings reveal that all actors agreed on developing farmer competencies through collaboration and business partnerships. Some stakeholders have the strongest level of convergence, consisting of local government agricultural agencies, local government industry agencies, farmer communities, and the banking industries. In contrast, the strongest divergence occurs with sellers of agricultural products and local public figures. In addition, the ranking or priority of farmer competencies from the top is innovative, communication, and entrepreneurial competencies. Policy implications emphasize increasing the level of collaboration and partnership between agricultural business stakeholders and local governments to enhance and guarantee the quality of farmer competencies.
