Abstract

The objectives of this study are to evaluate the impacts of relevant policy alternatives and international pressure for Indonesian pulp and paper industries on the domestic economy. Ten policy alternatives set for period 1993-2003 are simulated with a simultaneous econometric model. The two-stage least squares method was used to estimate the parameters of the behavioral equations in the model.  Using income distribution and welfare criterias, the results indicate that the objective of decreasing pulp price will  improve the welfare of Indonesian society. It is essential that the policies would avoid a monopsony of  pulpmills for the timber-estate and a monopoly for the papermills.  Not significantly, the distribution of replanting fund  will improve in a little of the domestic economy.  Since the distribution of the fund be stopped, then producers' surplus will decline and the highest income distribution will be received by small-log producers, and the income transfer effects result a net welfare gain to Indonesian society. Stock dictation will be the domestic economy worse-off, but that would not be a case in the export embargo. Indonesia will loss in foreign exchange receipts because of the decreasing interest rate and international pressures. The domestic economy will decline due to this policies and pressure, so the net transfer effects are a welfare loss to Indonesian society as a whole

Abstract

One aquaculture commodity that has a high economic value and potential to be developed in Indonesia is lobster. Lombok Island is a considerable lobster-producing area that has a great potential for the future development. However, lobster farming in this island lacks in productivity due to the management factors. Therefore, to achieve a sustainable development, the lobster farming needs a number of efforts to improve its productivity and technical efficiency. This study aims to: (1) analyze the influencing factors to the production of lobster farming and (2) analyze the level of technical efficiency and affecting factors on the technical inefficiency of lobster farming. The primary data were collected through surveys of 106 lobster - farming households. The stochastic frontier production function with Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) method was used to analyze the efficiency of the cultivation system. The results suggested that most of the farmers are technically efficient with the average of the technical efficiency level of 0.91. The production inputs that have significant effects include the quantities of seed and feed and culture period. The technical inefficiency was influenced by the farmers’ age, experience, education and perceptions on sustainability of their farming. Keywords: technical efficiency, lobster farming, stochastic frontier production function, Cobb-Douglas, MLE

Abstract

Background: Bali cattle have a significant role in supporting food security through providing meat and contributing to the economy by increasing farmers’ income. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the competitiveness and profitability of the Bali cattle business in supporting animal food security and economic growth in Southeast Sulawesi Province. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted from June to October 2024 in South Konawe and Muna Regencies, Southeast Sulawesi as centers for Bali cattle development. Data were collected from 240 Bali cattle farmers through direct interviews, focus group discussions, and secondary sources from various agencies. The analysis used in this study was the Policy Analysis Matrix (PAM). Findings/Result: The results of competitiveness in South Konawe Regency were a private cost ratio (PCR) of 0.77 and domestic resource cost (DRC) of 0.82 with a private profitability (PP) of IDR 2.4 million per head per year and social profitability (SP) of IDR 1.9 million per head per year. The competitiveness results in Muna Regency are a private cost ratio (PCR) of 0.52 and domestic resource cost (DRC) of 0.60 with private profitability (PP) of IDR 5.7 million per head per year and social profitability (SP) of IDR 4.8 million per head per year. Conclusion: These results state that the Bali cattle business in both regencies is efficient and has competitiveness both competitively and comparatively. Therefore, developing Bali cattle and farmers' access to input-output prices is crucial in government policies to meet national demand.Originality/value (State of the art): Our research focuses on the competitiveness and profitability of smallholder Bali cattle farming. The study targets farmers utilizing semi-intensive systems (breeding and fattening) or intensive systems (fattening only) in two primary Bali cattle development areas: Konawe Selatan District, representing the mainland, and Muna District, representing the island region in Southeast Sulawesi Province. Keywords: Bali cattle, development centers, competitiveness, profitability, pam
