Abstract

Religious cultural artefacts such as the cap (peci), Koko shirt, turban, sarong, or the diction of ustadz and Islamic boarding schools are part of the power dynamics in the late 2021 and early 2022 abuse cases. This research aims to interpret the da'wah communication messages implied in religious cultural artefacts, as well as dismantle and restore the meaning of religious cultural symbols, in order to maintain and protect the degree of da'wah. A critical paradigm with a post semiotic (hyper semiotic) approach was used in the research. According to the findings of the study, the position of religious symbols in semiotics has noble values in the context of da'wah. However, it is an ideological tool for worshippers of desire to achieve their individual goals in the context of most semiotics. The artefact is shrouded in libido ideology. The authors' research bridges the problem of meaning, which is frequently generalised in everyday life, so that people can see clearly and wisely about this issue. Critical da'wah communication can help to develop this wisdom and policy.

Abstract

LORI SME (Small and Medium Enterprise), operating as a producer of fashion accessories characterized by local craftsmanship, encounters challenges in accommodating diverse customer preferences due to resource constraints. To unleash its full potential, there exists a pressing need to adopt innovative design methodologies. This research endeavors to investigate the application of a modular design approach as a strategic solution for augmenting the variety of LORI SME accessories, thereby facilitating the creation of a range of jewelry products that can be easily tailored and adapted to meet individual customer requirements. The study utilizes a qualitative research methodology, encompassing literature reviews, interviews with the owner, exploration of visual motifs and materials, and practice-based research. The findings of this research illuminate that the adoption of a modular design approach significantly enhances the diversity of LORI SME's jewelry offerings, particularly in the case of its necklace products. This modular approach provides SMEs with a broader array of customizable necklace options characterized by distinctive local motifs and high craftsmanship value. These findings furnish valuable insights for SMEs within the LORI SME sector aiming to expand their product portfolios. Additionally, they offer guidance to designers and artisans regarding the potential advantages and challenges associated with the incorporation of modular design strategies in the broader context of small business innovation and product development.

Abstract

This paper attempts to reveal how the local media, Kedaulatan Rakyat, produces discourse on the Yogyakarta palace’s internal conflict involving Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X and his siblings. The Special Region of Yogyakarta as a province in Indonesia has a special government system that is different from other regions. The governor of Yogyakarta is not elected by the people like in other regions in Indonesia but is determined by the DPRD based on who serves as the King of the Yogyakarta Palace. This phenomenon becomes interesting when there are differences of opinion among the people and within the Yogyakarta Palace regarding the acceptance of women leaders. The conflict began to arise when Sultan Hamengku Buwono X issued the Sabda Tama and Sabda Raja (Sabda Raja) which were interpreted as the Sultan’s way to pave the way for his daughter to become heir to the throne. The Sultan’s younger siblings opposed the female king to rule in Yogyakarta, so an internal conflict arose. The research method used is a qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis approach using the Norman Fairclough model to analyze news texts related to the Yogyakarta Palace’s internal conflict from the Kedaulatan Rakyat Daily. From the results of the research, it was found that the Kedaulatan Rakyat Daily produced discourses on internal conflict in the Yogyakarta palace by representing the ideology and interests of Sultan HB X’s younger siblings. This local daily newspaper also commodified internal conflict in the Yogyakarta palace as events that were produced and disseminated to the public for the benefits media economy.

Abstract

The emergence of female directors in the Indonesian film industry is expected to be able to represent female characters in films based on the perspective of women themselves. However, in the film YUNI by female director Kamila Andini, a scene was found showing the female lead wearing revealing clothing. This is identical to the concept of the male gaze which makes women the object of the gaze and positions women only as complementary objects or inferior groups. Therefore, the author wants to look more deeply at how women are represented in the film using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis which goes through the stages of analyzing the subject-object position and the audience position. Based on the results of the analysis, Kamila Andini is in the position of a woman who criticizes the issues experienced by women in a unique way, and deconstructs the old representation of women who are considered an inferior group. Meanwhile, to see the public's perception of the image of women, further research is needed that discusses the perception of Indonesian society towards the image or impression of Indonesian women today.

Abstract

Background: The reason for this research is the rise of hate speech attributed to the rigid concept of traditional masculinity, which leads to toxic masculinity. In addition, there are limited Public Service Advertisements in Indonesia that discuss biased concepts of masculinity. Therefore, public service advertisements on sexual harassment and masculinity produced by Indonesian government agencies, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, such as “#GerakBersama – Ini Gak Lucu” are interesting to analyze further. Purpose: This study examined how masculinity is represented and the message conveyed in the public service advertisement “#GerakBersama – Ini Gak Lucu”. Methods: To see the representation of masculinity and the message, the public service advertisement was divided into several scenes analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotics based on primary and secondary meanings. Results: The study found that the public service advertisement “#GerakBersama - Ini Gak Lucu” is intended to introduce a new concept of masculinity, that a man can still embody masculinity even when performing a beautiful and gentle dance. Conclusion: In this public advertisement, masculinity is also portrayed as men who dare to speak up, demonstrate loyalty, and support one another. Implications: Further research is required to assess the advertisement’s effectiveness in reshaping the social perception of masculinity in Indonesian, specifically whether they hold the traditional perception of masculinity or embrace this new perspective.

Background: The emergence of Indonesian female directors is expected to be able to represent female characters in films based on the perspective of women themselves. However, in one film directed by a female director, a scene was found showing the female lead wearing revealing clothing that is identical to the concept of the male gaze. Purpose: This study aims to see whether the director's gender influences the depiction of female characters in the films they direct. Methods: Therefore, an analysis was conducted on four films directed by two male directors and two female directors to see how the representation of female characters in films is based on the director's gender using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis. Results: Several contrasting differences were found between male and female directors in depicting female characters in films, especially in the four films analyzed, namely 27 Steps of May, Imperfect (by male directors), and Marlina si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak, Yuni (by female directors), which can be seen in the aspects of characterization, location setting, explanations regarding the fate of predators, and a number of issues touched upon. Conclusion: Based on the comparative results, it was found that the director's gender influences the representation of women in films. Implications: Indonesian filmmakers, especially women, are expected to utilize the mass media of film to correct various stigmas and problems that tend to marginalize women in order to create a social and work environment that is free from gender-based discrimination.
