Abstract

Transgender issues, including those who have been called as ‘waria’, are diverse, complex, and evolving, particularly in Indonesia where the most inhabited people are Muslims commonly bringing with them any sexual and, sadly, religious stereotype to waria as marginal(ized) individuals. This paper aims to raise a question of our primordial understanding and religious experience on the existence of the transgender community. It focused on an empirical study of Kebaya (Keluarga Besar Komunitas Waria Yogyakarta), Yogyakarta’s Center for Transgendered, which is an NGO developed by transvestites in Yogyakarta to struggle against prejudice, acceptance, and HIV Aids. This study is not specifically to analyze their social relation, but importantly how the NGO became a shared space of interfaith dialogue and a representation of religios life among transgender people in Yogyakarta, including the ways they build socio-cultural-religious relation with other people and religious figures. It would be analyzed under socio-anthropological approach to religion by which this study reflect them as a part of the certain community who had special position in terms of interreligious dialogue. The implication of this study suggests that interfaith dialogue is possible, not only among the inner-circle of mainstream religious believers, but also among and from the edge community: from those who often feel ostracized within today’s trans-population in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper is to figure out R. Ng. Yasadipura I’s poe(li)tical imagination of Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. The ‘politics’ is defined not merely as instrumental utility, but intertwined with ‘poetics’, an aesthetic strategy which allegorically unveils an interpretation of the undecidability of  Islam as central Islam or peripheral Islam, as Arabia Islam or Javanese Islam. Based on the biographical and structural approaches, this article attempts to analyze textual, ideological, and religious traces of this 18th century Javanese Muslim bhujangga and its relation to the way he describes Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. Yasadipura I is a political subject, since he describes Islam not merely as a religious consensus, but also dissensus to other identities. This dissensus is partly a logical consequence of—using Jacques Rancière’s term—Yasadipura I’s ‘class migration’, ranging from Muslim student (santri) from Kedu, royal advisor (menteri) of Surakarta court, to prolific writer and translator of Hindu-Buddhist kakawin and Islamic Malay suluk.

Abstract

This article is to figure out how Javanese power succession has archetypal structures and relational systems in Babad Tanah Jawi, representing that the past is prophetic prologomena for the future. Using Lévi-Strauss’s structural anthropology of myth as a methodological approach, this study attempts to analyze the relational systems of successive power of Javanese characters (rulers) from pre-Majapahit to early Mataram in Babad Tanah Jawi and to interpret symbols of the prophetic divine during the periods of different Javanese reigns. This study has found that Javanese dynastic succession has been characterized by archetypal structures, in which the Javanese rulers commonly passed through identical phases of life-journeys, ranging from getting divination from fortune-teller (prophecy), getting out of the origins (exodus), to getting political recognition to be the next ruler (legitimacy). This system argues that the mythological prophecy in Babad Tanah Jawi is political because it prevails the logic of the Javanese worldview (weltanschauung) and the precondition of mystical and political legitimacy for Javanese rulers. The narratives of prophetic symbols, in which the different Javanese rulers had been involved in similar forms and structures, also imply the political dimension of prophecy representing the power of their reigns.

Abstract

This article is to examine the contribution of Islamic education in the production of existensialist generation, those who had self-consciousness in the primordial facticity in the unconsciousnessed world. By reconstruction of Muslim philosopher Mulla Sadra’s and existensialist philosopher Jean P. Sartre’s ideas, this study attempts to search for a shared point between both ideas and to create a new matrix on the existensialist generation. Finally, it is partly aimed to point out that Islamic education, which was commonly underestimated as having left hand, had important role to meet requirement in producing those who had ‘criterion’ of being existensialists.

Abstract

This paper is to analyze “image” of Sunan Ampel, including Ampel tombs, mosque, wells, and market, projected within the three online directoriesand the possible impacts of this use on different visitors. By using Turner’s concept “communitas”, liminality, and third space, Sunan Ampel site is also considered as a space in which the ties between tourism and pilgrimage are unclear, blurred, and poorly classified. This relationship has also resulted in possible potentialities on how that site has projected mysticism, death, and apophantic nature of Sunan Ampel. The changing projection of the site will be also highlighted in the context of economic and social contestation. The consequence of such interpretation is that Sunan Ampel could be empty vessel in which the interpretative battle and representations are continuosly contested. “Sacred pilgrimage” to Sunan Ampel, finally, overlaps with tourism, trade, expression of nationalism, cyber-pilgrimage, and others.

Abstract

One of the student's difficulties in reading Arabic texts, in general, is due to the unique shape of the Arabic letters and no resemblance to the alphabet. So that students feel foreign in identifying and recognizing the letters. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the difficulty of reading Arabic texts in maharah qira'ah learning, starting from linguistic, and non-linguistic problems, and providing solutions to Arabic subject teachers in overcoming these difficulties. The results of the study indicate that there are two factors for difficulty reading Arabic texts, namely internal factors (linguistics) and external factors (non-linguistics). And the efforts that must be made by an educator in overcoming students' difficulties in reading Arabic texts are by getting used to speaking Arabic even if only a little, providing motivation, giving rewards, getting used to reading Arabic texts, and changing the views of students who think that learning Arabic is difficult and not interesting, learning becomes easy and interesting
