Abstract

Presidential Regulation Number 21 of 2019 concerning the National Action Plan for Mercury Reduction and Elimination (RAN-PPM) became the strategy for reduction and elimination of Mercury, then later revealed in the Regional Action Plan for Mercury Reduction and Elimination (RAD-PPM). According to it, a comprehensive monitoring method is urgently needed, neither only related to the elimination of mercury in the ASGM sector, but also for regional development potential. This research is a Research and Development research, which is a type of research that aims to develop applications, which are used as a tool for decision making-a Decision Support System (DSS). Using a descriptive qualitative method, to analyse related documents, interviews with related actors, and calculate System Usability Scale to analyse and see the usability and the level of user acceptance to the WebGIS. The case study is the development and preparation of a WebGIS related to the ASGM sector in Kokap, Kulon Progo. The result of the study shows that an information system with geospatial-based analysis could facilitate data integration, implementation and monitoring of the regulation of mercury elimination, especially in the ASGM sector. As a result of the WebGIS System Usability Scale for Small-Scale Gold Mining in Kulon Progo Regency, it is included in the category of applications that can be accepted by users and is quite appropriate. Nevertheless, synergy and cooperation between various agencies are necessary. Moreover, the data related to socio-economic which is an important information system for regional development can also be mapped in a GIS.

Abstract

Nickel is an essential metal element and is applied in various sectors. One of the useful nickel–based derivatives products is nickel hydroxide [Ni(OH)2]. This compound is widely applied as raw material for electrodes of rechargeable batteries, capacitors, electrolyzers, and catalysts. This study focuses on the synthesis of Ni(OH)2 using the hydroxide precipitation method. A solution from the extraction process of spent catalysts was used as a precursor solution. After the precursor solution was obtained, the precipitation process was carried out at pH 10, where the operating temperature was varied at 30–60oC. NaOH, KOH, and MgO solutions were used as precipitating agents. The experimental results show that the Ni(OH)2 compounds were produced optimally at low temperatures, 30oC. It could be indicated from the lowest concentration of Ni2+ ions in the liquid phase that reached that temperature. The three precipitation agents also gave good results in the precipitation of Ni2+ ions, where almost all of the Ni2+ ions were precipitated from the liquid phase. The precipitated products were characterized using SEM, XRD, and XRF. The analysis results showed that the product was agglomerated and formless. The purity of the precipitates formed were 24.1 and 29% for the precipitating agents MgO and NaOH, respectively.

Abstract

One of the factors that affect the leaching process of a mineral source is the mineral characteristics of the raw materials. Not all mineral phases can be leached directly and completely. Thus, some minerals require special treatment so that the leaching process can take place optimally. This study will focus on studying the effect of additive compounds addition, i.e. hydrogen peroxide and sodium chloride, in the leaching process of spent catalyst using a sulfuric acid solution. The leaching process was carried out at a concentration of 1 M sulfuric acid solution for 240 minutes at room temperature. The hydrogen peroxide concentration was varied at 0–9%v/v, while the sodium chloride concentration was varied at 0–0.8 mol/L. The experimental results showed that the two additive compounds were able to increase nickel recovery significantly. The highest nickel recovery of 95.08% was achieved when hydrogen peroxide was used at 9%v/v. The nickel recovery is 3.5 times higher than without the addition of hydrogen peroxide. Meanwhile, sodium chloride concentration of 0.8 mol/L was able to provide the highest nickel recovery of 50.38% or an increase of 1.9 times compared to without the addition of sodium chloride.

Abstract

Heavy metals and Rare earth elements (REEs) are nowadays being used widely in many industries from electronics to petroleum industries as catalysts. However, their disposal caused serious problems to the environment. With the sharp growth in its usage, there is a better way to use and utilize valuable metals from secondary sources such as their disposal rather than using new raw materials. The aim of this work is to study the potential of citric acid as a leaching agent to extract lanthanum and nickel in various acid concentration and leaching temperature. The raw material used in this work is spent catalyst from Pertamina Refinery Unit VI, Balongan, Indonesia. The spent catalyst is decarbonized with a heat treatment at 725°C for 10 minutes before the leaching process. The leaching process used 0.1; 1; and 2 M of citric acid with a varied temperature of 30, 60, and 80°C. The lanthanum recovery was calculated by comparing the mass percentage of lanthanum before leaching process and after leaching process using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX). The results were analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM) and are proved to be a reliable method to depict and analyze the leaching characteristics. The molarity of the citric acid is the most significant independent variables used in the research for lanthanum recovery response. However, based on the Pareto analysis result there are no significant variables that affect the recovery of nickel. The second order polynomial fitting model is also proved to be compatible with the response of lanthanum recovery but is less compatible with nickel recovery.

Abstract

AbstractThe use of lithium is growing significantly in the global market, especially in Indonesia. To meet this demand, extraction of valuable lithium from other natural sources is considered, such as geothermal brine. The research was conducted using the nanofiltration method. During the study, the process was operated at various pressures (5, 7, and 9 bar) and pH variations (4, 7, and 10). Due to the possibility of fouling on the membrane and the phenomenon that occurs cannot be observed properly, synthetic geothermal brine is used in this study so that it is assumed that the silica has been removed previously. Based on the analysis of research data, it can be seen that the difference in pH and pressure plays an important role in the lithium concentration of geothermal brine. By using the Response Surface Method (RSM) it is known that the highest lithium recovery is obtained at operating conditions of pH 10 and pressure of 9 bar.

Abstract

This study used direct electrowinning to examine the viability of producing silicon from amorphous silica in alkaline conditions. The Indonesian Dieng Geothermal Power Plant provided a sample of geothermal sludge with a high silica (SiO2) content. The samples were analyzed using various analytical techniques (XRF and XRD) before to electrolysis to ascertain their chemical composition and mineralogy. At low temperatures (30°C), the direct electrowinning method using amorphous silica suspended in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was introduced. Current density adjustments were made to determine the direct electrowinning method's ideal operation. XRD and XRF analyses were performed on cathode deposits and residues in electrochemical cells to ascertain the chemical composition and current recovery. At a current density of 1250 A/m2, the low-temperature electrolysis current efficiency on natrium silicate solution can approach 34% recovery. Geothermal sludge was used to investigate the process, and the process's mediocre performance was caused by the problematic adsorption of amorphous silica particles on the cathode.

Abstract

Hydrometallurgical processes such as leaching of limonite ore to extract valuable metals including Ni and Co are often non-selective, including other metals in the leachate product. The leaching behavior of Cr from the chromite mineral contained in limonite ore is of concern due to the high Cr content of the leachate effluent. The pre-roasted process is frequently used to pre-treat limonite to increase the precious metal content. This study aims to determine the leaching behavior of Cr and the effect of pre-roasting on its kinetic parameters. The pre-roasting process was carried out at 280 and 610 oC for 4 hours. Observation of Cr leaching behavior was carried out in the leaching temperature range of 30-90 oC for 0-120 minutes using sulfuric acid solvent. The highest Cr recovery was achieved in pre-roasted ore leaching at 610 oC with leaching operating conditions of 2 M sulfuric acid, solid-liquid ratio of 5 g/50 mL, 200 rpm, for 120 minutes, at a leaching temperature of 90 oC, under these conditions Cr recovery reached 53.16%. The higher the roasting temperature, the lower the activation energy required for the leaching process. Cr leaching from raw and pre-roasted ore is controlled by the diffusion process through the ash layer with activation energies (EA) of 21.41, 18.64, and 14.71 kJ/mol for raw ore, pre-roasted ore 280 oC, and pre-roasted ore 610 oC, respectively. The comparison of kinetics data from several roasting products for atmospheric leaching feeds will provide industry with information to integrated pyro-hydrometallurgical process to increase Cr production from laterite.
