Abstract

Minerals containing TiO2 are common in Indonesia, such as ilmenite in iron sand deposits scattered along the country's coasts. Ilmenite is an important source of titanium. One method for making TiO2 from ilmenite is by solubilizing both the Fe and Ti elements in HCl and then immediately hydrolyze the Ti. The leaching of low-grade ilmenite (ground to 0.177-0.149 mm) is studied kinetically by HCl in a stirred reactor. The research was conducted using the caustic fusion method followed by HCl leaching. The leaching reaction kinetics at the optimum conditions are analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM) with a second-order polynomial equation model and SSE with the shrinking core model (SCM). The results showed that HCl concentration and leaching time were directly proportional to the leached titanium concentration. In contrast, the leaching temperature was inversely proportional. The optimum operating conditions were obtained at a temperature of 30 °C, 9 M HCl, and 120 min of leaching time. The shrinking core model is a better representation of the kinetics than RSM with a second-order polynomial equation model. Based on SCM, the rate of the leaching reaction of titanium from low-grade ilmenite is controlled by diffusion through the ash layer.

Abstract

This study uses electrocoagulation to investigate reducing heavy metal content in wastewater from discharging spent batteries. ICP-OES analysis shows that heavy metals exceed the environmental water standard. The electrocoagulation procedure was conducted within a reactor with a 500 mL volume and a rectifier with a 5 A current capacity. Three types of electrode material combinations were used: iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) as well as Fe-Fe, Al-Al, and Fe-Al pairs with 1 cm in the distance by parallel monopolar cells. Alternating current was used with 30, 40, and 50 A/m2 current density. The best result shown in the Fe-Al electrode pair combination system at 40 A/m2 for 30 min contact time and removal efficiencies for Co, Cd, Ni, Zn, and As is 98.76, 90.73, 99.32, 97.93, and 97.78%, respectively, while for Hg it is 31.84%, even though only Cd is above the standard limit. The heavy metal bearing was confirmed using SEM-EDS in the floc and the precipitate residue. The dissolved electrode materials and electrical energy consumed are 0.32 g and 0.109 kWh/m3, respectively. This method can be a good alternative for treating wastewater compared to direct current electrocoagulation, where the electrode and energy will be less consumed.

Abstract

The recycling of spent lithium NMC-type batteries, widely used in electric vehicles, presents a challenge due to manganese content, which complicates metal separation and purification. This study explored a selective leaching process using ammonia to recover metals from high-manganese-content LMR-NMC cathodes. By adjusting the (NH4)2SO4 reagent concentration to 1–2 M and maintaining the temperature between 50–80 °C, the recovery rates of lithium, nickel and cobalt metals were enhanced, leaving manganese primarily as residue in the form of Mn(OH)₂ and (NH4)2Mn(SO4)2. A kinetics model, integrating an equilibrium-shrinking core model with a modified temperature-dependent Arrhenius approach, accurately simulates the metal recovery. The activation energies of the forward leaching reactions of Li, Ni, and Co were respectively (1.4331±0.0036)×105, (1.5494±0.0034)×105, and (1.5743±0.0040)×105 J/mol, while those for the backward reactions were (5.3307±0.0041)×105, (2.4753±0.0093)×105, and (1.6289±0.0092)×105 J/mol, respectively. The leaching mechanism was found to be exothermic, which allows maximum recovery at low temperatures. The findings highlight ammonia’s effectiveness as a selective leachant, significantly reducing manganese in the leaching solution, and streamlining nickel and cobalt separation, thus enhancing the recycling process’s efficiency and sustainability.

Abstract

In the synthesis of nanoparticles, the phenomenon of agglomeration is an undesirable condition because the particles formed can be larger. The use of surfactants can prevent the occurrence of this phenomenon. In this study, the use of surfactants was studied in the synthesis of nanosilica from geothermal sludge. The method applied in the synthesis of nanosilica is the sol-gel method. A 1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution was used to prepare the sol phase, while the gel phase was prepared at pH 5 using a 1.5 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. The surfactants used were alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The surfactant added to the precursor solution was at the critical micelle concentration (CMC), where the CMC values for each surfactant were 0.15, 0.05, 0.50, and 1.00 wt% for ABS, CTAB, SDS, and PVP, respectively. The experimental results showed that the synthesis of nanosilica without surfactant could produce the product with a purity of 98.03%. Even though the purity is already high, the resulting product experiences agglomeration and surfactants were needed to minimize the occurrence of agglomeration in the product. The surfactant that gives the best product quality is PVP, where the particle size is in the range of 2.01–3.65 nm. However, the product produced with this PVP has a low purity, 56.67%. It is because the sodium chloride (NaCl) is trapped in the surfactant template.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop a glaze from palm oil solid waste ash. Oil palm plants were chosen because the ash of palm fronds, stems and trees have not been utilized optimally, only used as organic fertilizer and material for making furniture. This research is applied research involving expertise in the field of fine arts, especially ceramic art and chemical engineering, with an inquiry-based research approach. Laboratory tests (EDX Report) were carried out so that the process of modifying the ash glaze formula could be carried out more accurately. The output of this research is the palm oil solid waste ash glaze formula/recipe and ash analysis table along with test pieces of ash glaze trial results and ceramic work prototypes. In practice, organic ash cannot be used alone, but must be mixed with other ingredients so that it can potentially be processed into glaze. The glaze formula used in this research contains different mixtures of ingredients. In this research, organic ash was mixed with soil (Sukabumi and Kebumen) and ready-to-use frit glaze (F.107 and F.3T). Next, the ash glaze is burned at cone temperatures 5 and 6 (1150 0C–1200 0C). The test piece material used is Sukabumi clay which has been proven to be compatible with the oil palm plant ash glaze formula, resulting in a more varied, attractive, artistic and unique visual appearance of the work.

Abstract

A study has been done to investigate and optimize the recovery of nickel from nickel-containing spent catalyst through sulfuric acid (1 - 2 mol/L) atmospheric leaching in different operation conditions. From the leaching experiments, it was possible to extract 77.95% nickel under the conditions of 2 mol/L H2SO4, reaction time of 5 h, 5% pulp density, and temperature of 80°C. In the next step Ni was selectively precipitated from a sulfuric acid-leached solution using 1 mol/L oxalic acid. The nickel content in the product was 97.29% Ni. Based on the study, sulfuric acid was found to be a suitable leaching agent to extract Ni from the nickel-containing spent catalyst. The study also indicated the effective extraction and recovery of nickel which was well supported by characterization studies using XRD technique.

Abstract

This study was conducted to study the effect of calcination on the characteristics of mesoporous nanosilica (MSN) from sludge geothermal waste and its performance in drug loading curcumin. The preparation of MSN was carried out using the sol-gel method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactant. The removal of surfactants from MSN was processed using the calcination method, where the muffle furnace was adjusted at a temperature of 600oC for 7 hours. The formed MSN samples were then characterized using XRF, XRD, FTIR, and BET instruments. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of MSN to curcumin before and after calcination was measured using a 600 ppm curcumin solution. This drug loading process lasted for 6 hours at room temperature. The study's results showed that MSN's composition and crystallinity structure did not change significantly due to the calcination process. However, the functional groups of MSN changed after calcination. The pore size of MSN after calcination also decreased from 4.31 (before calcination) to 4.02 nm. This change in MSN characteristics also affects the performance of curcumin drug loading. This can be seen based on the efficiency of curcumin adsorption, where calcined MSN can adsorb curcumin by 32.92%, while for uncalcined MSN, the adsorption efficiency is 25.64%. Based on the results of this study, the calcination process has a positive effect on the drug loading ability of MSNs.
