Abstract

The utilization of bamboo as a construction material remains infrequent, despite its widespread availability in Indonesia as a natural resource. This reluctance can be attributed to prevailing perceptions of its low durability, deeming it suitable only for temporary structures. Contrary to such notions, bamboo stands as a sustainable biomass material, offering potential solutions to alleviate the environmental impact associated with conventional construction practices. Nevertheless, the incorporation of bamboo in the construction sector, particularly in joint applications, poses notable challenges. This research endeavors to discern the factors influencing individuals' preferences in selecting various types of bamboo connections. Research methods using a qualitative approach from literature and questionnaires. Data analysis involves distribution and correspondence analysis. The findings reveal that internal considerations, encompassing ease of application, connection strength alignment with construction requirements, aesthetics, durability, and material cost, significantly shape the choice of connection types. Furthermore, external factors, specifically the influence of consultants and the expertise of craftsmen, play a pivotal role in the decision-making process. An efficient jointing system typically prioritizes factors such as strength, durability and cost. However, in this context of bamboo jointing systems, additional considerations - such as ease of application, the availability of materials, and aesthetic quality should also be taken into account. This research aspires to enhance understanding regarding the criteria guiding the selection of bamboo connections among the populace, thereby fostering a broader integration of bamboo within the construction industri in a manner that is both sustainable and environmentally conscientious.

Abstract

Building façades significantly influence building thermal performance and contribute to urban heat mitigation, particularly in hot-humid climates. While field testing, laboratory experiments, numerical modeling, and digital simulations are widely applied in façade research, methodological frameworks for integrating these into hybrid approaches remain limited. This study systematically reviews 32 peer-reviewed articles to analyze the types, sequencing, and disciplinary tendencies in applying hybrid experimental approaches for façade thermal performance research. Seven type of hybrid experimental approach were identified, with combination of field experiments-simulations are most common. Stage sequencing varied by research objectives, while disciplinary background influenced whether studies began with modelling or empirical experimentation. The proposed hybrid experimental research framework offers strategic guidance for approach selection and sequencing, supporting resource efficiency and methodological rigor in sustainable building design.

Abstract

Ensuring fire safety in dense residential areas is a major concern in urban disaster mitigation. The high incidence of fires and their impacts, including fatalities, economic losses, and social disruption, underscore the need to evaluate existing prevention systems. Aims: This study examines the relationship between fire alarm availability, evacuation training participation, and community preferences for improving fire safety measures. Methodology and results: A mixed-methods approach was used, integrating quantitative chi-square analysis with qualitative grounded theory. Quantitative data were obtained from a structured survey of 111-respondents, and qualitative data were derived from open-ended responses analyzed through open, axial, and selective coding. The results revealed a significant association between fire alarm availability and preferences for strengthening early warning systems (p = 0.0025). Participation in evacuation training was also significantly related to recommendations for improving evacuation facilities and procedures (p = 0.0064). Qualitative findings show that trained individuals prioritize accessible evacuation routes and routine simulation exercises. Conclusion, significance, and impact study: The study proposes three strategies: (1) improving affordability and access to fire alarm systems, (2) increasing community-based evacuation training, and (3) designing evacuation routes adapted to dense settlement conditions. These measures are expected to enhance fire safety and strengthen community resilience in high-risk residential areas.

Abstract

Global climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of hydrometeorological disasters, particularly floods in urban areas of Indonesia. High settlement density, inadequate drainage systems, and limited community preparedness further exacerbate flood vulnerability. Although various flood mitigation strategies have been implemented, the relationship between mitigation effectiveness, perceptions of community participation, and community readiness remains insufficiently examined through quantitative approaches, limiting the development of effective community-based interventions. This study analyses the influence of flood mitigation efforts—specifically adaptive capacity—and perceptions of community participation on community readiness, measured through risk literacy and structural preparedness. A mixed-methods approach was applied, combining factor analysis to identify latent dimensions and linear regression to examine relationships between variables. Data were collected from questionnaires administered to residents with prior flood experience and analysed using JMP software. The results indicate that Adaptive Capacity has a positive and significant effect on Structural Preparedness (β = 0.3930; p < 0.0001) and Risk Literacy (β = 0.3765; p < 0.0001). The Governance dimension of participation also shows a positive and significant influence on Structural Preparedness (β = 0.2499; p = 0.0170). In contrast, the Environmental Action dimension exhibits a negative and significant relationship with Risk Literacy (β = –0.3070; p = 0.0019). These findings suggest that community readiness is more strongly influenced by adaptive capacity and participatory governance than by physical environmental actions alone. The study highlights the need to integrate technical and social approaches and to strengthen risk literacy to enhance long-term community resilience to flood risks.

Abstract

A Study on Green Building Implementation in Indonesia from Stakeholder PerspectivesThe Implementing of Green Building (GB) in Indonesia faces multidimensional barriers due to differing stakeholder perceptions. This study compares the views of architects, civil servants, academics, and others on GB challenges and strategies. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, survey data from 137 respondents were analyzed. Results reveal a regional GB policy knowledge gap, with roughly 40% of architects and the public lacking understanding. While high investment costs are the primary barrier, solutions are polarized: professionals advocate for regulations, whereas the public emphasizes education. These findings highlight the need for a dual-track strategy combining regulations, fiscal incentives, and public education. Supported by collective leadership, this integration fosters a sustainable construction ecosystem that is legislatively compliant and socially embraced.

Abstract

The synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) has been widely added to lipids and food products as a preservative due to inhibiting lipid oxidation. However, concerns have arisen about the potential health impacts of this synthetic antioxidant on consumers. Therefore, there is a need for an alternative substitute for BHA that is safe for human health. The methanolic extract of Java Plum seeds (MEJS) contains a diverse group of phenolic compounds and has the potential to serve as a natural antioxidant. The antioxidant must remain stable during food processing, such as irradiation. This research aimed to determine the effect of γ-irradiation on the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of MEJS. When γ-irradiation was applied to MEJS at doses up to 12.5 kGy, there was a slight decrease in total phenolic and tannin content but a significant increase in total flavonoid content. This increase in total flavonoids led to a rise in both free radical scavenging and reducing power activities
