Abstract

Aphorisms are unique literary works known for their memorability, concision, and ambiguity. They have an information structure divided into theme (known information) and rheme (new information), with the "unmarked topical theme" playing a crucial role. This study examines the impact of translation techniques on these unmarked topical themes and their influence on translation quality, focusing on an unexplored area in Arabic discourse. The research design is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected from the aphoristic text of Al-Hikam in Arabic (L1) and its translations into Indonesian (L2a) and Javanese (L2b). The research problems addressed are: (1) What translation techniques do translators employ when dealing with the "unmarked topical theme" in Al-Hikam's aphoristic text? Do translators favor the source language or the target language? (2) How can the translation of unmarked topical themes in Al-Hikam's aphorisms be assessed in terms of accuracy, readability, and acceptability?. The study finds that translation techniques, including conventional equivalent, compensation, modulation, and reduction, significantly impact the translation quality of unmarked topical themes. The conventional equivalent technique is particularly effective in maintaining the position of the unmarked topical theme from the source language to the target language. This research contributes to developing an Arabic translation model based on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) analysis. It also provides a comparative analysis of the distinctive discourse topic development elements in Arabic, Indonesian, and Javanese texts, highlighting the implications of various translation techniques on the quality of aphoristic translations.

Abstract

Arabic-Javanese translation is a means of communication between nations as well as preservation of local languages. This research takes interrogative sentence and their translations from Arabic to Javanese. This research aims to describe the types and functions of interrogative sentences in the books of Khudz 'Aqīdataka min al-Kitabi wa al-Sunnah al-Shahīhah (KAKSS) and Al-Huda: Tafsir Quran Basa Jawi, as well as to describe the techniques, methods, ideology of translation. This research uses qualitative-descriptive method and Spradley's (1980) data analysis. Data collection in this study used documentary and sampling techniques then the data was validated using the theoritical triangulation method. In this research, there are three types of interrogative sentences: yes-no questions, 5W+1H questions, and rhetorical questions. The interrogative sentences in this study function as real questions, for example the creed and tawhīd in the KAKSS. Some of them function as rhetorical questions, such as denouncing and denying in the Al-Huda. As many as 65% of the dominant techniques lean towards target language (TL). The translation methods found are semantic, free, and communicative. The translation ideology used is domestication.

For example, negative statements that indicate prohibition or disapproval (makruh) must be translated precisely to prevent misunderstandings or mistaken readings. This study aims to analyzes al-jumlah al-manfiyyah in Arabic, translation techniques, and the quality in al-fiqh al-muyassar. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with Spradley's analysis, 93 instances were identified, employing 12 translation techniques. Of these, 82 were accurately translated with high readability, resulting in a final quality score of 2.83. This suggests that readers can comprehend fiqh worship texts and muamalat effectively. Thus, this research significantly advances scholarship in Arabic language research by setting benchmarks for precision and comprehensibility in translating Islamic legal texts. Future researchers should explore the subtleties of interpreting negative sentences in fiqh texts, consider cultural and contextual influences on Islamic legal texts, and establish standardized guidelines for accurate and accessible translations.

Abstract

Language extinction, both mother tongues and local languages, nowadays deserves Indonesian’ attention. When a language extinguishes, a cultural heritage and a character of a nation also disappear. Mother tongue and local languages should be preserved. One plausible way to do so is by maintaining the translation pattern of Arabic-Javanese that are common among the Islamic boarding schools. An example of such pattern is seen in Imam Al-Ghazali’s Bidaayatul-Hidaayah translated into Javanese by Kyai Haji Hammaam Naashirud-Din Magelang. The translation appears to be word-for-word translation with some explanation, syarah, which is also written in Javanese. This writing elaborated the translation problems of Bidaayatul-Hidaayah from its technique and method of translation. A qualitative descriptive method was used to figure out language feature shift in the Arabic-Javanese translation. This writing suggests that the moral message within Bidaayatul-Hidaayah serves as fundamental framework in shaping the Muslim learners in Indonesian Islamic boarding school.

Abstract

Local wisdom stood as a cornerstone of Indonesia's cultural richness. Regrettably, this invaluable asset, particularly in the form of "translation products," was overlooked and underappreciated. Despite Indonesia boasting a substantial collection of Arabic religious texts translated into Javanese, utilizing the pegon script, these Arabic-Javanese texts demanded preservation, scholarly exploration, and development grounded in specific theoretical frameworks. This research undertook a comparative analysis of "cultural terms" within religious texts, focusing on al-Hikam aphorisms translated from Arabic (L1) into both Indonesian and Javanese (L2). The primary objective was to dissect and analyze the local wisdom and Islamic Sufism moral values embedded in al-Hikam aphorisms through translation. The study drew on translations of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from carefully selected sources related to cultural terms, including books and various Arabic-Javanese translation dictionaries. Employing a purposive sampling method, data collection followed a meticulous process. Qualitative data analysis unfolded through four pivotal stages: (1) domain analysis, (2) taxonomy analysis, (3) componential analysis, and (4) cultural theme analysis. The findings, gleaned from lexicography study and semantic analysis of translation, revealed the existence of two translation ideologies shaping cultural terms in Arabic-Javanese religious texts: domestication ideology and foreignization ideology. This research underscored that translation products were inseparable from the ideological dimensions of foreignization and domestication. Foreignization endeavored to assimilate source language elements into the target language, while domestication integrated original components with local elements. This research contributed to a deeper understanding of how foreignization and domestication shaped the depiction of local wisdom in Arabic-Javanese religious texts.
