Abstract

This study addresses the critical role of schools in early-stage prevention of youth radicalization, focusing on the underexplored domain of everyday pedagogical practices within Islamic Religious Education (IRE). It positions IRE teachers as key soft-prevention agents whose daily interactions and theological interpretations can build micro-level resilience among students. Employing a phenomenological approach, this research is based on fieldwork involving 26 IRE teachers in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, utilizing semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings identify four core pedagogical strategies that constitute preventive practices: contextualizing sacred texts, character-focused instruction, modeling inclusive behavior, and engaging with the wider community. While these strategies generate significant resilience mechanisms capable of interrupting early radicalization pathways, their effectiveness is moderated by structural constraints, including limited professional development, inequitable access to certification, and ideological contradictions within schools and communities. By integrating the Islamic ethical concept of wasatiyyah (moderation) with established radicalization frameworks, this study contributes to scholarly debates on culturally embedded prevention and specifies the institutional conditions necessary for teacher agency to effectively support resilience-building in plural societies. This article draws on data from a broader phenomenological study of IRE teachers’ practices in Banyuwangi, but specifically analyzes their role in preventing radicalization through the lens of wasatiyyah and soft prevention frameworks.

Abstract

The decline in the use of Bahasa Jawa Krama Inggil among elementary school students has become an important issue in preserving local wisdom amid the increasingly pervasive digital era. This condition indicates a shift in language practices that may reduce the values of politeness and Javanese cultural identity among the younger generation. This study aims to analyze the use of Bahasa Jawa Krama Inggil, identify the factors contributing to its decline, and examine preservation efforts in elementary schools in Blitar Regency. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation conducted in five public elementary schools in Blitar Regency. The research participants consisted of five principals, ten Javanese language teachers, and thirty students selected purposively. Data were analyzed through systematic stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that most students predominantly use the ngoko variety in daily communication, including when interacting with teachers, such as using the term “sampean” instead of “panjenengan.” This decline is influenced by three main factors: family environments that do not habituate the use of krama, school learning processes that remain largely theoretical, and the influence of digital media dominated by Indonesian and foreign languages. Preservation efforts include habituation of language use in schools, integration of local wisdom values into learning, and collaboration among families, schools, government, and communities. These findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive and adaptive approach, including the wise use of technology as a medium for cultural preservation.

Abstract

The flow of globalization, accompanied by accelerated digitalization, creates multi-layered challenges for basic education, especially in character formation and maintaining students' cultural identity. It is not enough for elementary school teachers to only carry out the function of transferring knowledge; they are required to respond to cultural shifts through contextual and adaptive learning designs. This research aims to systematically map elementary school teachers' strategies in responding to the dynamics of cultural change. The study used a qualitative approach with the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method within the PRISMA framework, through the stages of identification, screening, feasibility assessment, and synthesis of 12 scientific articles that met the inclusion criteria. The results of the study reveal four dominant strategies: integrating local wisdom values in learning, strengthening school culture with an identity, implementing the Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) and Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) frameworks, and utilizing digital media based on local cultural riches. These four strategies have been proven to contribute to forming character, affirming cultural identity, increasing learning engagement, and fostering a tolerant attitude towards diversity. This study concludes that the dynamics of cultural change due to globalization should not only be seen as a threat, but also as a momentum for teachers to provide learning that is meaningful, inclusive, and remains rooted in local cultural values.
