Abstract

Pineapple peel waste (Ananas comosus) is a source of organic waste with high lignocellulose content that has the potential to be utilized through a bioconversion process into glucose. This study aims to determine the Michaelis–Menten kinetic equation of cellulose hydrolysis into glucose using cellulase enzymes and analyze the effect of substrate concentration (1–5% w/v) and hydrolysis time (60–180 minutes) on the reaction rate. The research stages include delignification using 5% NaOH at 80ºC and enzymatic hydrolysis with 10% cellulase at pH 5 and 50ºC. Glucose levels were measured using a Brix refractometer through a standard glucose solution calibration method. The results showed an increase in glucose concentration over time and substrate concentration, with the highest conversion of 91.5% at 5% substrate. Kinetic analysis using the Michaelis–Menten equation yielded an average reaction rate constant (k) of 0.3328 min⁻¹, with the highest k of 0.3828 min⁻¹ and the highest Michaelis–Menten constant ( ) of 2.357 mg·L⁻¹ at a substrate concentration of 5%. A significant increase in  from 0.2403 (1%) to 2.357 (5%) indicates a decrease in enzyme affinity due to substrate saturation. Therefore, a concentration of 5% is considered the optimal condition for the cellulose hydrolysis process, confirming the potential of pineapple peel waste as an efficient substrate source.

Abstract

Universitas Pembangunan Nasional "Veteran" Jawa Timur (UPNVJT) is committed to realizing a sustainable campus. However, this commitment was challenged at the Warung NKRI canteen, where liquid waste was discharged into open sewers, causing pollution and odor. This Community Service Program aimed to solve this issue through a multidisciplinary approach. The methods included educating vendors and customers on waste management and implementing a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP/IPAL). To ensure sustainability, socialization on system maintenance was conducted for the Business Management Unit (BPU) and cleaning service staff. The results showed increased awareness within the canteen community and the WWTP's success in producing clearer, odorless effluent. This program proves that cross-disciplinary collaboration can deliver tangible and sustainable solutions for campus environmental sanitation.

Abstract

Abstrak: Air lindi merupakan limbah cair hasil dekomposisi sampah di Tempat Pemrosesan Akhir (TPA) yang berpotensi mencemari lingkungan karena kandungan bahan organik dan logam beratnya yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kinetika pertumbuhan bakteri Pseudomonas fluorescens serta karakteristik fisik hasil fermentasi air lindi. Proses fermentasi dilakukan secara aerob selama 8 hari dengan variasi volume inokulum bakteri 5 mL, 7 mL, dan 10 mL dalam 100 mL air lindi. Parameter yang diamati meliputi pH, suhu, konsentrasi C-organik, dan jumlah koloni bakteri. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan pertumbuhan bakteri secara signifikan pada fase logaritmik dengan pola linear hubungan antara ln(CA0/CA) dan ln(CC/CC0). Nilai koefisien determinasi (R²) mendekati 1, yang mengindikasikan kesesuaian dengan model kinetika pertumbuhan. Selain itu, terjadi penurunan kandungan C-organik dan logam berat, serta perubahan karakteristik fisik air lindi yang menunjukkan peningkatan kualitas hasil fermentasi. Dengan demikian, fermentasi air lindi menggunakan Pseudomonas fluorescens berpotensi mengurangi dampak pencemaran dan meningkatkan nilai guna air lindi sebagai hasil olahan ramah lingkungan. Abstract: Leachate is a liquid waste generated from the decomposition of solid waste in landfill sites, which has the potential to pollute the environment due to its high content of organic matter and heavy metals. This study aims to analyze the growth kinetics of Pseudomonas fluorescens and the physical characteristics of leachate after the fermentation process. The fermentation was carried out aerobically for 8 days with variations of bacterial inoculum volumes of 5 mL, 7 mL, and 10 mL in 100 mL of leachate. The observed parameters included pH, temperature, C-organic concentration, and bacterial colony count. The results showed a significant increase in bacterial growth during the logarithmic phase, following a linear relationship between ln(CA0/CA) and ln(CC/CC0). The determination coefficient (R²) values were close to 1, indicating good conformity with the microbial growth kinetics model. In addition, there was a reduction in C-organic and heavy metal contents, as well as changes in the physical characteristics of the leachate, indicating improved quality of the fermentation product. Therefore, leachate fermentation using Pseudomonas fluorescens has the potential to reduce environmental pollution and enhance the usability of leachate as an environmentally friendly processed product.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the performance of aluminum sulfate (alum) coagulant in river water, tofu waste, and batik waste with varying doses on the effectiveness of the coagulation-flocculation process. The method used was a jar test on 1000 mL of water samples, including coagulation for 1 minute at 120 rpm, and flocculation for 20 minutes at 40 rpm, and sedimentation for 15 minutes. The variations in alum doses used were 150 mg/L, 200 mg/L, and 250 mg/L. The results showed that this process caused pH changes during treatment and was effective in reducing turbidity, TSS, and color although the optimum dose differed for each sample. In river water, the optimum dose of 150 mg/L resulted in 98.99% turbidity removal, 81.82% TSS removal, and 99.11% color removal. Meanwhile, for tofu waste, the optimum dose of 250 mg/L resulted in 86.67% turbidity removal, 98.66% TSS removal, and 96.16% color removal. Meanwhile, for batik waste, the optimum dose of 200 mg/L resulted in 97.89% turbidity removal, 95.76% TSS removal, and 91.61% color removal. This indicates that the coagulant dosage needs to be adjusted to the characteristics of each type of sample used.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi kinerja membran PVDF pada proses ultrafiltrasi (UF) dengan penerapan adsorpsi sebagai pre-treatment menggunakan dua jenis adsorben, yaitu karbon aktif dan zeolit, dalam pengolahan air Sungai Jagir. Proses adsorpsi dilakukan selama 30 menit untuk menurunkan beban pencemar sebelum tahap UF, yang dioperasikan pada tekanan 1 bar, 1,5 bar, dan 2 bar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi zeolit–UF menghasilkan fluks yang lebih stabil dibandingkan karbon aktif–UF, terutama pada tekanan 1,5 bar dengan nilai fluks mencapai 490,35 L/m².jam. Penyisihan kekeruhan tertinggi diperoleh pada tekanan 2 bar, yaitu 0,17 NTU untuk karbon aktif–UF dan 0,33 NTU untuk zeolit–UF. Penurunan TDS relatif kecil, berkisar antara 2,5–8,1%, karena ukuran ion terlarut lebih kecil dari pori membran UF (sekitar 0,01 µm). Sementara itu, penyisihan Total Coliform mencapai lebih dari 99,9%, dari 33.000 MPN/100 mL menjadi 9,2 MPN/100 mL pada karbon aktif–UF dan 3 MPN/100 mL pada zeolit–UF. Secara keseluruhan, kombinasi zeolit sebagai pre-treatment dengan tekanan operasi 1,5 bar menghasilkan keseimbangan optimal antara stabilitas fluks dan efektivitas penyisihan, sehingga direkomendasikan sebagai sistem pengolahan air sungai yang efisien dan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Domestic waste remains a problem in Ngagel Rejo Village, Surabaya City, where the community is largely composed of small medium enterprises (SMEs) food traders. This study aims to assign an economic value to domestic waste management services that are not traded in the market. The benefits of deploying a mobile Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) will be estimated to determine the economic value of WWTP siting and to develop a retribution (user-fee) scheme for domestic waste management, particularly for the food waste consortium. A Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) will be used to elicit willingness to pay (WTP) from WWTP users as a measure of the non-use benefits of this public service and its role in reducing the impacts of domestic waste. The analysis yielded a mean WTP value of 3.6827 (as measured in the survey), which corresponds to a recommended fee of IDR 69,496.00 per month for domestic waste management services using a mobile MBBR reactor. Key factors influencing WTP include community commitment to environmental preservation programs and support for the program, consistent with the idea that public engagement strengthens the sustainability of environmental initiatives

Abstract

The wastewater generated by fish-processing industries in Lamongan Regency contains TSS, BOD₅ and COD concentrations that exceed the quality standards specified in East Java Provincial Regulation No. 72/2013. The media in the Multi Soil Layering method consist of a mixture of soil and charcoal, along with a permeable layer. This research aims to analyze the effectiveness of MSL method with variations in soil type, Hydraulic Loading Rate, and sampling time. The results indicate that red soil is the most effective in removing TSS 89,26%, while andosol soil is more efficient in reducing BOD₅ 42,86% and COD 68,33%. The physical, chemical, and mineral properties of each soil type significantly influence pollutant removal performance. Pollutant removal at an HLR of 0,2 m3/m².hour was more optimal compared to 0,4 m3/m².hour, as the lower HLR allows longer contact time between the wastewater and the media in the reactor. Sampling at the 7-hour mark yields optimal efficiency, indicating that the media had not yet reached saturation.

Abstract

Kadar bahan organik pada air limbah domestik dari Asrama Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) “Veteran” Jawa Timur tergolong masih tinggi, sehingga pengolahan diperlukan sebelum air tersebut dibuang ke lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh variasi laju aerasi dan rasio resirkulasi terhadap penurunan Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) dan amoniak (NH₃-N) menggunakan biofilter aerob sistem oxic-anoxic. Penelitian dilakukan pada skala laboratorium menggunakan campuran blackwater dan greywater dengan rasio 1:1. Variasi laju aerasi yang digunakan adalah 0,5; 1; dan 1,5 L/menit, sedangkan rasio resirkulasi yang diterapkan yaitu 40%, 60%, dan 80%. Reaktor dioperasikan selama 8 jam yang terdiri atas fase oxic I, anoxic I, oxic II, dan anoxic II, masing-masing selama 2 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan laju aerasi dan rasio resirkulasi menyebabkan penurunan konsentrasi COD dan NH₃-N. Konsentrasi COD terendah diperoleh pada laju aerasi 1,5 L/menit dan rasio resirkulasi 80%, yaitu sebesar 65 mg/L, sedangkan konsentrasi NH₃-N terendah sebesar 5,39 mg/L diperoleh pada kondisi yang sama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi laju aerasi 1,5 L/menit dan rasio resirkulasi 80% menghasilkan penurunan COD dan NH₃-N tertinggi dibandingkan perlakuan lainnya.

Abstract

Peningkatan kualitas pengolahan air limbah domestik diperlukan untuk mengurangi pencemaran lingkungan akibat tingginya kandungan bahan organik dan senyawa nitrogen. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas media Polyurethane Foam (PUF) dan Polyurethane Foam–Polyvinyl Alcohol (PUF-PVA) pada sistem MBBR dengan kondisi oxic-anoxic dalam menyisihkan parameter BOD, COD, dan amonia. Penelitian menggunakan air limbah domestik campuran grey water dan black water dari Asrama UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur. Media PUF-PVA dibuat menggunakan metode freeze-thaw dengan konsentrasi PVA 8%. Variasi volume media yang digunakan sebesar 30%, 40%, dan 50% dengan waktu tinggal hidrolik (Hydraulic Retention Time/HRT) selama 8 jam pada siklus oxic 3 jam dan anoxic 1 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan volume media meningkatkan efisiensi penyisihan pada kedua jenis media. Media PUF-PVA menghasilkan kinerja yang lebih baik dibandingkan PUF pada seluruh parameter yang diuji. Kondisi optimum diperoleh pada media PUF-PVA dengan volume media 50% yang menghasilkan efisiensi penyisihan BOD sebesar 85,8%, COD sebesar 73,8%, dan amonia sebesar 88,3%, menunjukkan penyisihan organik dan nitrogen lebih tinggi daripada media PUF.

Abstract

Pengolahan limbah tinja secara biologis murni rentan terhadap fluktuasi beban amonia yang dapat menyebabkan toksisitas dan menurunkan kinerja nitrifikasi secara tiba-tiba. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis pengaruh kombinasi dosis zeolit sebagai penyangga terhadap fluktuasi beban amonia, serta siklus aerasi oxic-anoxic untuk mendorong konversi amonia secara tuntas menjadi gas nitrogen (N₂), terhadap efisiensi penyisihan amonia dan nitrat menggunakan reaktor Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) intermiten. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan enam reaktor dengan kombinasi tiga dosis zeolit (0, 25, dan 50 g/L) dan dua siklus aerasi (3:3:3:3 jam dan 4:2:4:2 jam) terhadap limbah tinja dengan konsentrasi amonia awal 124,8 mg/L. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan efisiensi penyisihan amonia berkisar antara 60,5% hingga 81,1%, dengan kombinasi dosis zeolit 50 g/L dan siklus 4:2:4:2 jam menghasilkan efisiensi tertinggi. Analisis General Linear Model (GLM) menunjukkan bahwa dosis zeolit, siklus aerasi, dan fase operasional berpengaruh signifikan terhadap penyisihan amonia (R-sq = 99,75%) maupun nitrat (R-sq = 98,11%). Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa zeolit teraktivasi mampu meredam fluktuasi beban amonia, sementara siklus oxic-anoxic mendorong konversi amonia menjadi gas nitrogen secara lebih tuntas dibanding sistem nitrifikasi tanpa fase anoxic.
