Abstract

Low levels of teacher collaboration and varying professional competence remain key challenges in improving the quality of elementary education. This study aims to develop and examine the effectiveness of a transformational–distributed leadership model in fostering a collaborative teacher culture and enhancing professional competence. This study employed a research and development (R&D) approach based on the model of Walter R. Borg and Meredith D. Gall, consisting of planning, model development, trial, and revision stages. The participants included principals, teachers, and school supervisors. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, observations, and document analysis and analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings indicate that the developed model is effective in improving teacher collaboration and professional competence. The mean score of teacher collaboration increased from 2.85 to 4.21, while professional competence improved from 3.02 to 4.18. The model also demonstrated high levels of practicality and relevance. Qualitative results revealed increased teacher engagement in joint planning, collaborative decision-making, and professional development activities. The novelty of this study lies in integrating transformational and distributed leadership into a validated operational model that simultaneously targets collaborative culture and teacher professional competence in elementary schools. In conclusion, the transformational–distributed leadership model is effective and offers a practical framework for school leaders to promote sustainable, collaboration-based school improvement.

Abstract

Although elementary school principals’ leadership practices have been widely examined, studies that simultaneously test the effects of transformational and distributed leadership on students’ academic and non-academic achievement in the Indonesian context, particularly in Barru Regency, remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the influence of principals’ transformational and distributed leadership on the academic and non-academic achievement of elementary school students in Barru Regency. The research was conducted from October to November 2025 using a quantitative approach with an explanatory survey design, involving 210 teachers from 15 public elementary schools selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires and documentation of students’ academic scores and non-academic achievements, and were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The measurement model results showed that all indicators met the validity and reliability criteria (outer loading > 0.70; AVE > 0.50; CR > 0.70). The structural model yielded R² values of 0.64 for academic achievement and 0.58 for non-academic achievement. Hypothesis testing indicated that transformational leadership had a significant effect on academic achievement (β = 0.45; p < 0.001) and non-academic achievement (β = 0.32; p < 0.001), while distributed leadership also had a significant effect on academic achievement (β = 0.29; p < 0.001) and non-academic achievement (β = 0.41; p < 0.001). These findings contribute to the development of educational leadership theory by integrating visionary transformational leadership and collaborative distributed leadership in the comprehensive enhancement of learning outcomes. The study concludes that the synergy of these two leadership approaches plays an important role in improving students’ academic and non-academic achievement and recommends strengthening principal leadership development programs in Barru Regency.

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted in response to the growing need for the integration of interactive digital media in elementary science education. The primary objective was to examine the effectiveness of the Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) model supported by the Karotena application utilizing Augmented Reality (AR) technology in enhancing students' learning motivation in Science and Social Studies (IPAS). A quasi-experimental research design employing a posttest-only control group was implemented involving two separate fourth-grade classes at UPTD SD Negeri 28 Parepare, consisting of an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected using a learning motivation questionnaire and analyzed statistically through the Independent Samples t-test. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group achieved a higher mean motivation score (88.13) than those in the conventional learning group (75.62). Furthermore, the statistical analysis indicated a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. These results confirm that the implementation of the AR-assisted Digital Game-Based Learning model has a significant positive effect on improving elementary school students' learning motivation in Science and Social Studies (IPAS). Abstrak: Riset ini didasari oleh urgensi pemanfaatan media interaktif berbasis digital dalam pembelajaran sains di sekolah dasar. Tujuan utamanya yaitu memetakan efektivitas model Digital Game Based Learning (DGBL) bermediakan aplikasi Karotena berteknologi Augmented Reality (AR) terhadap stimulasi motivasi belajar IPAS siswa. Abstract

Digital reading has become ubiquitous in educational settings, yet its impact on learning outcomes remains complex and context-dependent. This systematic literature review synthesizes evidence from nine open-access articles published by Taylor & Francis between 2021 and 2025, focusing on digital reading within the education subject area. Adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the study employed a rigorous screening process to identify relevant research, followed by thematic synthesis to extract key characteristics, outcomes, and implications. The analysis reveals four predominant themes shaping current discourse. First, mode effects highlight inequality-sensitive patterns in large-scale assessments, suggesting that digital formats may exacerbate existing achievement gaps if not carefully managed. Second, metacognitive navigation and strategic processing emerge as critical determinants of comprehension, emphasizing the need for learners to actively regulate their engagement with digital texts. Third, the review examines digital early-literacy ecosystems, underscoring the importance of home literacy supports, shared digital storybook reading, and established quality principles for children’s digital picture books in fostering foundational skills. Fourth, critical–ecological perspectives reframe digital reading through lenses of attention, curriculum design, and social justice, advocating for a holistic approach to future literacy practices. The findings indicate that benefits of digital reading are most pronounced when instructional scaffolds, high-quality design, and equitable access are explicitly prioritized. Conversely, risks such as superficial processing arise when efficiency-driven logics dominate without adequate support for deep comprehension. Consequently, this study proposes targeted implications for pedagogy, interface design, assessment frameworks, and future research directions. By integrating these insights, educators and policymakers can better navigate the challenges of digital literacy, ensuring that technological integration supports rather than hinders equitable and profound learning experiences in diverse educational contexts.
