Abstract

This study aims to analyze the optimization of local regulations on No Smoking Areas (KTR) in creating a balance between human health and environmental preservation in North Labuhanbatu Regency. The research employs a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The research informants consist of the health department, local government, active smokers, and non-smoking communities. The findings indicate that the implementation of the local regulation on KTR has not been effective. This ineffectiveness is reflected in the widespread presence of cigarette advertisements in public areas, the high prevalence of smokers, and the increase in respiratory disease cases after the regulation was enacted. Although the local government has made optimization efforts through the installation of no-smoking stickers and banners, its implementation still faces several challenges, including limited supervision, low public awareness, resistance from the tobacco industry, and weak coordination among stakeholders. Therefore, an integrated strategy based on supervision, education, law enforcement, and technological innovation is required to enhance the effectiveness of KTR implementation.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen the literacy of santri (Islamic boarding school students) in religious moderation by integrating the core values of contextual jihad, inclusive nationalism, and ecotheology. The urgent need to fortify the younger generation's resilience against religious extremism, radicalism, and environmental apathy drove the initiative. The program employed a participatory action research method in Langsa City, focusing on the formation and training of cadres who acted as peer educators. A single-group pretest and posttest design involving 30 santri was used to measure changes in ecotheological practices and attitudes towards religious moderation and nationalism. The results demonstrated a highly significant increase in the santri's ecotheological practices (p < 0.001), evidenced by improved habits in water conservation, waste management, and use of reusable items. Furthermore, a significant strengthening was observed in their commitment to religious moderation and nationalism (p = 0.006), including stronger support for the rights of minorities, the Indonesian constitution (UUD 1945), and Pancasila. The study concludes that the peer-educator-based mentoring model is an effective strategy for simultaneously internalizing the integrative values of constructive jihad, nationalism, and environmental stewardship. This integrative approach offers a sustainable model for developing a generation that is religious, patriotic, and ecologically conscious, which can be replicated in other Islamic educational institutions. Keywords: Religious Moderation, Ecotheology, Jihad, Nationalism, Santri, Peer Educator.

Abstract

The Japanese occupation of Indonesia from 1942 to 1945 transformed colonial society through the implementation of a wartime economic system designed to sustain Japanese military expansion in the Pacific. Within this context, mass media functioned not merely as channels of information but as strategic instruments of economic propaganda and colonial discourse. This study examines how the newspaper Asia Raya, published in Jakarta, was utilised to build public support for the Japanese war agenda and to disseminate ideological narratives on economic mobilisation, social discipline, and cultural integration. The research employs a historical method with a qualitative approach through textual analysis of Asia Raya archival materials from Khastara, complemented by books and scholarly journal sources. The findings reveal that Asia Raya systematically framed economic policies, labour mobilisation, and wartime sacrifice as collective moral responsibilities, thereby legitimising Japanese political authority in occupied Indonesia. The study demonstrates that the newspaper operated not only as a propaganda medium but also as a mechanism for shaping colonial perceptions and regulating public consciousness during wartime. This research contributes to the historiography of the Japanese occupation by emphasising the interconnection among wartime media, economic propaganda, and colonial power relations.

Abstract

Background: Modern academic libraries no longer function solely as providers of academic information, but also as spaces that support students' comfort and well-being. This study analyses the spatial comfort of the Library of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara and its relationship with student well-being.Purpose: The aim of this research is to evaluate the role of facilities and a sense of safety in creating spatial comfort, as well as to identify the challenges encountered. Methods: This study employed a qualitative case study approach to analyse library space comfort and its relationship with students' well-being at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara Library. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving librarians and students who actively utilise the UMSU library. The analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, using Environmental Psychology theory and the Learning Commons concept as analytical lenses. Results: The results indicate that physical aspects (lighting, noise, and layout) and psychological aspects (sense of safety) are the main determinants of spatial comfort, which contribute to reducing students' academic stress. The findings also show that comfortable library spaces improve students' concentration, emotional stability, and learning experiences. Conclusions: In conclusion, libraries are no longer perceived merely as places for studying and discussion, but also as "healing spaces" that provide a calm atmosphere for generating new ideas and relaxing while reading. This study contributes to the discussion of human-centred academic library design by demonstrating that spatial comfort functions not only as physical support for learning activities, but also as a psychological mechanism that supports emotional regulation, stress recovery, and students' well-being within Indonesian higher education contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the institutional development of the Fansuri Museum at the Bongal Site in Central Tapanuli during 2023–2025, with particular emphasis on community-based heritage preservation and museum governance. Previous studies on the Bongal Site have predominantly focused on archaeological discoveries and maritime trade networks. At the same time, the emergence of local museums as community-driven heritage institutions has received comparatively limited scholarly attention. This qualitative field study employed direct observation, in-depth interviews with museum administrators and local communities, and document analysis as its primary data sources. The findings reveal that the establishment of the museum was closely associated with public concerns regarding the loss of archaeological artefacts resulting from mining activities in the Bongal area. Between 2023 and 2025, the museum underwent gradual institutional development through more systematic collection management, expanded educational programs, and strengthened public participation in heritage-related activities. The study further identifies several persistent challenges, including limited conservation infrastructure, limited financial capacity, and limited availability of professional museum management. This research demonstrates that the Fansuri Museum functions not merely as a repository of historical artefacts but also as a community-based heritage institution that reinforces local historical consciousness and promotes cultural education within coastal communities.
