Abstract

Zeolite is a hydrated aluminosilicate mineral (solid) in which silicate ions (SiO44-) and tetrahedral alumina (AlO45-) combine to form a porous/hollow and negatively charged crystal structure. Natural zeolite can be isolated from several sources, such as volcanic ash, sand, rocks, and rice husks, to industrial organic waste. Zeolite catalysts can be synthesized through various methods such as sol-gel, hydrothermal, ionothermal, and alkaline fusion. The purpose of modifying zeolite catalyst material is to improve its catalytic capabilities and physical and chemical properties, which can be done by various methods, including sol-gel, hydrothermal, ionothermal, and alkaline fusion. The use of zeolite-based catalysts and their derivatives has been widely used in various chemical reactions and industries such as isomerization processes, molecular cracking, to the manufacture of biodiesel. The conclusion is that zeolite is a widely developed material because of its abundant quantity in nature, and it is relatively cheaper and can be modified so that it can be used in various chemical reactions.

Abstract

This research informs a descriptive study of caffeic acid derivatives such as ethyl caffeate, fluoro methyl caffeate, chloro methyl caffeate, bromo methyl caffeate, iodo methyl caffeate compounds, using density functional theory in B3LYP method with def2-TZVP basis set. The substitution of various halide atoms in the derivative compounds showed a high increase in chemical reactivity than the methyl group for the main compound by increasing the electron donor ability of the compound in chemical reactions. The molecular structures of some derivative compounds were optimized with geometrical analysis values depicting stable molecular structures with lower HOMO-LUMO energy difference. Quantum chemical parameters such as hardness (η), softness (σ), electronegativity (χ), and electrophilicity (ω) were generated as descriptors for the chemical behavior of the molecules. The FT-IR vibrational frequencies that have been calculated and characterized are in good agreement with the molecular structure. The molecular docking results show that the five ligands are able to interact with amino acid residues similar to the amino acids of the native ligand. The binding energy values for the five native ligands are -6.5, -6.8, -6.6, -6.5, and -6.4 kcal mol-1. Furthermore, binding and interaction values similar to the native ligand, it is expected that the five ligands have potential as anticancer.

Abstract

Zircon sand mining is a major industry in Indonesia due to the country's vast zircon reserves. However, this industry also generates hazardous waste that can pollute the environment. This study aims to investigate the potential of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) synthesized from magnetic waste generated during zircon sand mining as an adsorbent for methylene blue dye removal. Magnetite was successfully synthesized via the co-precipitation method and characterized using XRD and FTIR. The synthesized magnetite demonstrated the ability to adsorb methylene blue from aqueous solutions with an adsorption efficiency of 68.52% after 80 minutes of contact time. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo second order model, evidenced by R² value of 0.9918, and the adsorption isotherm fitted the Langmuir model, indicating adsorption energy of 24.51 kJ/mol and adsorption capacity of 69.678 mg/g. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of natural magnetite (Fe₃O₄) derived from zircon sand waste as an adsorbent for methylene blue dye removal. This research not only addresses the environmental issue caused by zircon sand mining waste but also develops a cost-effective and sustainable solution for methylene blue dye removal from wastewater.

Abstract

Coordination compounds are compounds consisting of a metal atom as a center surrounded by ligands, which are important in applications such as catalysts and pharmacological sensors. Salophen, as one of the organic ligands, is capable of forming complexes with various metal ions. This study uses a computational chemistry approach to model the geometry, electronic properties, and bond vibrations of compound complexes between salophen and Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) metal ions using the PM6 semiempirical method. Modeling results show that the metal ion radius affects the dihedral angle of salophen, with the largest angle occurring in the complex with Hg(II) ions, while the complex with Cd(II) ions tends to be close to planar. FTIR analysis shows that the vibrational pattern is influenced by the bond length of salophen with metal ions. In addition, the HOMO-LUMO gap energy of the three complexes is also slightly different, with the Zn-salophen complex having the smallest Egap of 0.25709 eV.

Abstract

Tuwung Village, Pulang Pisau Regency, possesses significant potential in the fisheries sector. However, the development of this sector is hindered by the reliance on expensive commercial fish feed, which limits profit margins from fish sales. Furthermore, organic waste generated from agricultural and livestock activities remains underutilized, posing a potential environmental pollution problem. To address these challenges, a training program on independent fish feed production utilizing organic waste and local resources has been implemented. This program aims to equip the KUPS Fisheries Group in Tuwung Village with the knowledge and skills to produce high-quality fish feed at a more affordable cost. Through this training, participants were introduced to the concept of utilizing household vegetable waste and motan fish from Lake Sabuah as alternative feed ingredients. Additionally, they received training in both conventional and mechanical fish feed production processes, employing a specially designed mixer unit. The program outcomes indicate that participants successfully grasped the concept of waste and local resource utilization and are now capable of producing fish feed independently. It is anticipated that this program will enhance the productivity and efficiency of fish farming businesses in Tuwung Village, while simultaneously mitigating the environmental impact of organic waste.

Abstract

Carbon dots (CDs) are a novel class of carbon-based nanomaterials with diverse applications due to their biocompatibility, optical properties, and chemical stability. This study aims to synthesize CDs from Terung Dayak (Solanum ferox) using a microwave-assisted method and evaluate their optical properties, metal ion sensing capability, and antioxidant activity. The CDs were synthesized with variations in microwave power and citric acid concentration, specifically: CD-a using 1 g citric acid at 600 W, CD-b using 2 g citric acid at 600 W, CD-c using 3 g citric acid at 600 W, and CD-d using 2 g citric acid at 800 W, and then characterized using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results revealed strong UV absorption with maximum peaks at 250 nm for all CDs synthesized and 275 nm for CD-d, depending on synthesis conditions. The CDs exhibited fluorescence intensity influenced by microwave power, with the highest intensity observed for CDs synthesized at 800 W and 2 g of citric acid. The optical bandgap from UV-Vis spectra, determined via Tauc plot analysis, ranged from 4.03 eV to 4.71 eV, indicating quantum confinement effects for all CDs. Furthermore, CD-d demonstrated selective fluorescence quenching for Fe3+ ions, which quenched the fluorescence of the CD. Antioxidant activity was confirmed via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, with an IC50 value of 126 ppm for CD-d. These findings highlight the potential of Terung Dayak-derived CDs as multifunctional materials for sensing and antioxidant applications.
