Abstract

This study aimed to compare the meat quality of different beef cattle breeds using ultrasound imaging. A total of 28 cattle, aged 1-2.5 years, from three breeds were analyzed: Wagyu (n=7), Bali (n=10), and WagyuBali cross-breeds (n=11). Meat quality traits, including longissimus dorsi thickness (LDT), backfat thickness (BFT), intramuscular fat (IMF), and marbling score (MS), were assessed using ultrasound imaging. The association between breed and meat quality was analyzed using a completely randomized design (CRD) followed by Tukey's test. Additionally, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify clusters of meat quality potential among the different breeds. The results indicated that WagyuBali cross-breeds exhibited the highest LDT (46.3804.770 mm), though the difference was not statistically significant (P0.05) compared to either Bali or Wagyu cattle. However, significant differences (P0.05) were observed between Bali and Wagyu cattle. For BFT, MS, and IMF, Wagyu cattle outperformed both Bali cattle and WagyuBali cross-breeds, with values of 5.4900.806 mm, 6.0100.998, and 49.058.140%, respectively. The PCA revealed two primary clusters: the first cluster, comprising Wagyu cattle, accounted for 75.6% of the diversity and was characterized by BFT, IMF, and MS as key variables. The second cluster included Bali cattle and WagyuBali cross-breeds, representing 21.5% of the diversity, without any specific meat quality variable as a defining marker. Ultrasound imaging effectively estimated meat quality in Bali cattle and their cross-breeds, demonstrating its potential as a tool for meat quality assessment across different breeds.

Abstract

Background: The benefits of frozen semen can improve the genetic quality of the offspring, the wide distribution of superior genetics to various locations even in distant areas. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal level of egg yolk in spermax diluent for the preservation of frozen semen of landrace boars. Methods: The design used was a completely randomized design consisting of four treatments with four replications each, namely: P1 = Spermax + 5% egg yolk, P2 = Spermax + 10% egg yolk, P3 = Spermax + 15% egg yolk, and P4 = Spermax + 20% egg yolk. Each treatment diluent was supplemented with 6% glycerol. Semen was diluted in the base diluent and stored for 2 hours at room temperature (27–28 °C). Next, the semen was centrifuged at 2000 rpm for 10 minutes, the supernatant was discarded, and the sediment was re-diluted. The semen was then evaluated for sperm motility, viability, and abnormalities, packaged in 0.5 mL straws, and equilibrated for 2 hours at a temperature of 3–5 °C. The semen was re-evaluated and frozen on the surface of liquid nitrogen at a distance of 10 cm for 10 minutes, then stored in a container filled with liquid nitrogen for 24 hours. The frozen semen was subsequently evaluated for motility, viability, abnormalities, and recovery rate. Results: The results of the study did not have a significant effect (T> 0.05) with the highest values in each treatment after thawing being motility (T3 = 28.75 ± 11.08%), viability (T4 = 47.52 ± 18.14%), abnormality (T1 = 9.84 ± 2.05%) and recovery rate (T3 = 35.93%). Conclusion: Addition of egg yolk with levels of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% in the spermax diluent produces the same quality of frozen landrace boar semen.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between linear body measurements including chest girth (CG), body length (BL), and wither height (WH) and body weight (BW) in Rote sheep ewes across different age groups to determine the most reliable predictor of body weight. The research employed a quantitative method through direct field measurements and weighing. Data collected including vital statistics (CG, BL, WH) and BW from Rote sheep ewes categorized into three age groups (I0, I2, and I4). The data were analyzed statistically using correlation coefficient (r), the coefficient of determination (R²), and bias analysis to evaluate the accuracy of weight estimation. The results revealed that chest girth exhibited the highest correlation with body weight, particularly in the I0 group (r = 0.93; R² = 86.05%), indicating a strong positive relationship and high predictive accuracy. Body length showed a moderate relationship (r = 0.87; R² = 76.11%) in the same group, while wither height demonstrated a relatively weaker correlation (r = 0.73; R² = 53.94%). Across all age groups, the predictive strength of body measurements decreased with increasing age, suggesting that skeletal growth contributes less to body weight variation in mature sheep. In conclusion, chest girth was identified as the most accurate and reliable linear measurement for predicting body weight in Rote sheep ewes, particularly in younger age groups, and can therefore be used as a practical and non-invasive tool for estimating livestock weight.

Abstract

Abstract. Jalaludin, Nikolaus TT, Sabat DM, Setyani NMP. 2025. Substituting star grass with corn fodder in Bali Heifer Diets: Impact on intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, and blood profile. Asian J Agric 9: 881-888. This study aimed to evaluate the substitution of Star Grass Silage (SGS) with hydroponic Corn Fodder (CF) in the diets of Bali heifers, with a focus on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen retention, and blood profile parameters. Hydroponic corn fodder was assessed as a sustainable alternative to star grass silage for Bali heifers, which are typically raised in dry tropical regions characterized by seasonal forage scarcity. Previous studies on the use of corn fodder have predominantly focused on dairy cattle, buffaloes, or goats; therefore, this study provides novel information on Bali heifers in terms of intake, digestibility, nitrogen retention, and blood profiles to determine the optimal substitution level. The experiment employed a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four dietary treatments, consisting of the replacement of SGS with CF at levels of 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60%. The results showed that CF substitution significantly affected (P < 0.05) nitrogen intake and nitrogen retention, with the highest values observed at the 20% CF substitution level, while increasing the substitution to 60% resulted in reduced nitrogen intake and retention. In contrast, CF substitution had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on dry matter, organic matter, and crude protein intake, nutrient digestibility, or blood profile parameters. It was concluded that hydroponic corn fodder can effectively replace star grass silage at substitution levels of 20-40% of the forage portion without impairing nutrient utilization or physiological balance. These findings highlight the potential of hydroponic corn fodder as a forage resource to support the sustainability of Bali cattle production in tropical regions with limited forage availability, particularly during the dry season.
