Determining the hybrid diversity between Bali cattle (Bos javanicus) and Wagyu cattle (Bos taurus) breeds using specific microsatellite markers. Biodiversitas 25: 3048-3055. This study aimed to determine hybrid diversity between Bali and Wagyu cattle using microsatellite markers. Total blood samples were collected from Bali purebreds (n=32 heifers), Wagyu×Bali crossbreeds, which consist of 2 bulls and 9 heifers (n=11), and Wagyu purebreds (n=6 dams). The four microsatellite markers (INRA035, ILST006, ETH225, and HEL9) were used to determine genetic diversity among cattle populations, which is part of what is recommended by FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization). GenAlex, CERVUS, MEGA10, UPGMA, and RStudio software were used for data analysis. Thirty-one alleles were identified at the four microsatellite loci used in this study. All identified alleles were polymorphic and informative. This study found 283 bp and 300 bp (ILSTS006) and 139 bp (ETH225), demonstrating the private alleles for Wagyu×Bali crossbreeds; 104 bp (INRA035), 284 bp (ILST006), 155 bp, 159 bp, and 167 bp (ETH225) were private alleles for Bali purebred, while 288 bp (ILST006), 145 bp (ETH225), and 162 bp (HEL9) were private alleles for Wagyu purebred. Based on Neighbor Joining and PCA analysis, the Wagyu purebred exhibited at the different clusters in both Wagyu×Bali crossbred and Bali purebred. These findings highlight that microsatellite markers effectively distinguished between Bali purebred, Wagyu x Bali crossbred, and Wagyu purebred cattle, providing valuable insights for breeding programs tailored to each population.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between linear body measurements including chest girth (CG), body length (BL), and wither height (WH) and body weight (BW) in Rote sheep ewes across different age groups to determine the most reliable predictor of body weight. The research employed a quantitative method through direct field measurements and weighing. Data collected including vital statistics (CG, BL, WH) and BW from Rote sheep ewes categorized into three age groups (I0, I2, and I4). The data were analyzed statistically using correlation coefficient (r), the coefficient of determination (R²), and bias analysis to evaluate the accuracy of weight estimation. The results revealed that chest girth exhibited the highest correlation with body weight, particularly in the I0 group (r = 0.93; R² = 86.05%), indicating a strong positive relationship and high predictive accuracy. Body length showed a moderate relationship (r = 0.87; R² = 76.11%) in the same group, while wither height demonstrated a relatively weaker correlation (r = 0.73; R² = 53.94%). Across all age groups, the predictive strength of body measurements decreased with increasing age, suggesting that skeletal growth contributes less to body weight variation in mature sheep. In conclusion, chest girth was identified as the most accurate and reliable linear measurement for predicting body weight in Rote sheep ewes, particularly in younger age groups, and can therefore be used as a practical and non-invasive tool for estimating livestock weight.

Abstract

Abstrak: Masalah yang dihadapi oleh peternak di Desa Ponain, Kecamatan Amarasi, Kabupaten Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) yaitu sulitnya memenuhi kesediaan pakan secara kesinambungan baik mutu mau jumlahnya. Hal ini karena harga pakan yang tinggi, sehingga peternak memberikan pakan seadahnya tanpa melihat kebutuhan harian ternak babi yang menyebabkan produktivitas ternak babi menurun dan membutuhkan waktu pemeliharaan yang lebih lama. Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan bahan lokal menjadi pakan alternatif dengan cara meningkatkan nilai gunanya dan pengurangi penggunaan pakan komersial sehingga lebih ekonomis serta meningkatkan softskill dan hardskill masyarakat dalam mengelolah pakan alternatif. Pelaksanaan PkM ini menggunakan metode ceramah dan eksperimen langsung bersama masyarakat. Masyarakat yang ikut dalam kegiatan ini adalah 25 orang dengan 19 laki-laki dan 6 orang perempuan. Evaluasi kegiatan ini dilihat dari adanya pre-test sebelum kegiatan dan post-test pada akhir kegiatan. Solusi yang di tawarkan yaitu pembuatan pakan alternatif menggunakan batang pisang yang difermentasi. Hal ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan dan mengoptimalkan kandungan nutrisi dan nilai guna batang pisang sehingga peternak dapat memenuhi kebutuhan nutrisi harian ternak babi serta dapat menekan biaya pakan. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini peternak dapat mengetahui pemanfaatkan pembuatan pakan alternatif guna menekan biaya produksi pakan yang mahal. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi melalui post-test dari 25 orang menunjukan hasil 80% responden mengalami peningkatan pengetahuan tentang fermentasi batang pisang.Abstract: The problem faced by breeders in Ponain Village, Amarasi District, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is the difficulty of meeting feed supplies in a sustainable manner, both in quality and quantity. This is because the price of feed is high, so farmers provide as little feed as they can without considering the daily needs of pigs, which causes pig productivity to decrease and requires longer maintenance time. This Community Service (PKM) aims to utilize local ingredients into alternative feed by increasing its useful value and reducing the use of commercial feed so that it is more economical and improves the community's soft skills and hard skills in managing alternative feed. The implementation of PkM uses lecture methods and direct experiments with the community. There were 25 people who took part in this activity, 19 men and 6 women. Evaluation of this activity is seen from the pre-test before the activity and post-test at the end of the activity. The solution offered is making alternative feed using fermented banana stems. This aims to increase and optimize the nutritional content and use value of banana stems so that farmers can meet the daily nutritional needs of pigs and can reduce feed costs. Through this service activity, breeders can learn about the use of alternative feed production to reduce expensive feed production costs. Based on the results of evaluation via post-test from 25 people, the results showed that 90% of respondents had increased knowledge about banana stem fermentation.

Abstract

Abstrak: Program pencegahan stunting di Desa Oeltua, Kabupaten Kupang, bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas kader posyandu dengan mengembangkan softskill seperti komunikasi dan kepemimpinan, serta hardskill seperti pemetaan masalah gizi dan pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal, seperti budidaya maggot BSF dan ayam KUB . Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini mencakup pelatihan dan workshop pemanfaatan limbah hortikultura untuk budidaya maggot Black Soldier Fly (BSF) dan pemeliharaan ayam Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) guna pemenuhan kebutuhan protein bagi keluarga. Selain itu, peserta dibekali keterampilan dalam pemetaan masalah gizi dan pemberdayaan perempuan untuk mendukung pemenuhan pangan keluarga. Mitra dalam program ini adalah 31 kader Posyandu Bahagia yang berlokasi di Desa Oeltua, Kecamatan Taebenu, Kabupaten Kupang. Evaluasi program dilakukan melalui pre-test dan post-test, masing-masing terdiri dari 15 soal untuk mengukur sejauh mana peningkatan pemahaman peserta. Hasil pre-test menunjukkan bahwa hanya 42% peserta memiliki pemahaman yang benar terkait stunting dan pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal, sedangkan setelah kegiatan berakhir, hasil post-test mencatat peningkatan signifikan dengan 74% peserta mampu menjawab dengan benar. Sebanyak 25% peserta juga berpartisipasi aktif dalam diskusi dan praktik langsung selama kegiatan berlangsung. Program ini diharapkan berkelanjutan dalam mendukung kemandirian gizi masyarakat dan menurunkan angka stunting melalui pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal serta pemberdayaan perempuan, dengan dampak positif jangka panjang di wilayah seperti Desa Oeltua. Abstract: The stunting prevention program in Oeltua Village, Kupang Regency, aims to increase the capacity of posyandu cadres by developing soft skills such as communication and leadership, as well as hard skills such as mapping nutrition problems and utilizing local resources, such as BSF maggot cultivation and KUB chickens. This community service activity includes training and workshops on the utilization of horticultural waste for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation and raising Balitbangtan Superior Village Chicken (KUB) to fulfill protein needs for families. In addition, participants were equipped with skills in mapping nutrition problems and empowering women to support family food fulfillment. The partners in this program are 31 cadres of Posyandu Bahagia located in Oeltua Village, Taebenu District, Kupang Regency. Program evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test, each consisting of 15 questions to measure the extent of the participants' understanding. The pre-test results showed that only 42% of participants had a correct understanding of stunting and local resource utilization, while after the activity ended, the post-test results recorded a significant improvement with 74% of participants able to answer correctly. A total of 25% of participants also actively participated in discussions and hands-on practices during the activity. This program is expected to be sustainable in supporting community nutrition independence and reducing stunting rates through the use of local resources and empowering women, with long-term positive impacts in areas such as Oeltua Village.

Abstract

Baumata Barat Village holds significant potential as a buffer zone for regional food security through the production of laying hen eggs by the Ora et Labora Farmer Group. However, high feed costs, due to the underutilization of locally available resources, remain a major constraint. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the capacity of the farmer group by promoting the use of locally sourced feed ingredients such as maize. A Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach was employed, encompassing the stages of preparation, socialization, training, technology application, mentoring, and evaluation. The training focused on the formulation of alternative feed using local maize, wheat bran, commercial concentrate, and limestone flour. Program evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-tests to assess changes in knowledge, skills, motivation, and participant satisfaction. Results indicated substantial improvements in knowledge (49.28%), skills (45.25%), motivation (59.48%), and satisfaction (15.37%). These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the participatory approach in transferring knowledge, enhancing practical competencies, and boosting participant engagement. This program is expected to make a sustainable contribution to food security by strengthening the capacity of local farmers to produce laying hen eggs at lower costs. The utilization of local resources such as maize as an alternative feed ingredient not only reduces dependency on commercial feed but also fosters self-reliance and sustainability in poultry farming in Baumata Barat Village. With the improvement of farmers’ knowledge, skills, motivation, and satisfaction, the productivity and stability of egg production are anticipated to increase, thereby reinforcing the village’s role as a buffer zone for regional food security. Desa Baumata Barat memiliki potensi besar sebagai desa penyangga ketahanan pangan melalui produksi telur ayam ras oleh Kelompok Peternak Ayam Petelur Ora et Labora. Namun, tingginya biaya pakan akibat belum optimalnya pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal menjadi hambatan utama. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas kelompok peternak dalam memanfaatkan potensi lokal seperti jagung untuk pakan alternatif ayam petelur jenis Isa Brown. Metode yang digunakan adalah Participatory Action Research (PAR), meliputi tahapan persiapan, sosialisasi, pelatihan, penerapan teknologi, pendampingan, dan evaluasi. Pelatihan difokuskan pada pembuatan ransum berbahan jagung lokal, dedak gandum, konsentrat, dan tepung kapur. Evaluasi dilakukan dengan pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur perubahan pada empat aspek: pengetahuan, keterampilan, motivasi, dan kepuasan mitra. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada pengetahuan (49,28%), keterampilan (45,25%), motivasi (59,48%), dan kepuasan mitra (15,37%). Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan berbasis potensi lokal dengan pendekatan partisipatif efektif dalam meningkatkan kapasitas kelompok serta mendukung keberlanjutan usaha peternakan. Kegiatan ini berpotensi memberikan kontribusi berkelanjutan bagi ketahanan pangan melalui penguatan kapasitas peternak lokal dalam memproduksi telur ayam ras dengan biaya lebih efisien. Pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal seperti jagung sebagai bahan baku pakan alternatif tidak hanya menurunkan ketergantungan terhadap pakan komersial, tetapi juga mendorong kemandirian dan keberlanjutan usaha peternakan di Desa Baumata Barat. Dengan meningkatnya pengetahuan, keterampilan, motivasi, dan kepuasan peternak, diharapkan terjadi peningkatan produktivitas dan stabilitas produksi telur, yang pada gilirannya memperkuat peran desa sebagai penyangga ketahanan pangan regional.
