Abstract

Background: The face's vertical dimension or vertical height is the distance between two anatomical points, namely the points on the maxilla and mandible. In measuring the vertical dimension, vertical dimensions of rest (DVR) and vertical dimensions of occlusion (DVO) must be measured. The difference between the vertical dimension of rest (DVR) and the vertical dimension of occlusion (DVO) is called the freeway space (FWS) or interocclusal distance. Freeway space is a key requirement for optimal comfort and function of a partial or complete denture. Each individual's freeway space distance is the movement of muscle function, which can be measured by direct methods such as the Willis method using calipers and the digital photo analysis method using computer software. Two measurement methods can be used to measure freeway space distance direct and indirect. Purpose: To analyze the difference between freeway space distance measured by the Willis method and by digital photo analysis of Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw graphic design software in the Banjar tribe (a review of students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat Banjarmasin). Methods: This study is a quantitative study with an analytic observational method and a cross-sectional approach. This study was conducted by collecting data simultaneously at one time by comparing three different methods on the same sample without being given any treatment. Results: One Way ANOVA test is 0.296 (P>0.05) which means there is no significant difference. Conclusion: There is no significant difference between the results of measuring freeway space distance using the Willis method with a digital caliper and digital photo analysis with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw software.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: In South Kalimantan, the prevalence of oral health problems is 56.83% among those aged 15-18 years. The prevalence of malocclusion is quite high at 12%. One of the factors causing malocclusion is the imbalance in the size of the upper and lower teeth, which can be assessed using Bolton's analysis. The severity of malocclusion varies between individuals and can be measured using ICON. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between the balance of the size of the upper and lower arch teeth and the severity of malocclusion in high school students in non-urban areas of Banjarmasin. Methods: An observational analytical study with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 175 adolescents aged 15-18 years. Bolton's analysis was used to measure the balance of the size of the upper and lower arch teeth, and the ICON index was used to assess the severity of malocclusion. Results: The results show a weak relationship and a negative value, the higher the balance of the anterior tooth size ratio, the lower the severity of the malocclusion, and the results of the correlation test show a very weak relationship and a negative value, the higher the balance of the overall tooth size ratio, the lower the severity of the malocclusion. Conclusion: The balance of tooth size, anterior tooth ratio and overall ratio based on Bolton analysis in high school students/equivalent in Banjarmasin non-urban areas is mostly unbalanced and the severity of malocclusion based on the ICON index has the highest frequency, namely in the low category. Keywords: Banjarmasin Non-Urban Areas, Bolton Analysis, High school students, ICON, Malocclusion ABSTRAKLatar Belakang: Masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut di Kalimantan Selatan memiliki prevalensi sebesar 56,83% pada usia 15-18 tahun. Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Malocclusion is an abnormality in the growth and development of teeth that can be influenced by bad oral habits, such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, lip biting, thumb sucking, and bruxism. This condition is often not recognized by the individual, but can have a significant impact on oral function and aesthetics. Purpose: This study aims to describe the incidence of malocclusion based on the type of bad oral habits among high school students in non-urban Banjarmasin. Methods: This study is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 175 students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and oral clinical examinations, then analyzed descriptively using frequency distribution and percentages. Results: The results showed that the most common bad habit found was mouth breathing (24%), and the majority of those affected were females, while bruxism was most common in males (12.00%). The most common type of malocclusion found was protrusive (25.91%), with the highest prevalence in females. There is a tendency that certain types of bad habits can lead to certain types of malocclusion. Conclusion: Malocclusions based on bad habits are still common in non-urban areas of Banjarmasin, so there is a need for increased education regarding bad habits that can cause malocclusion.
