Abstract

Background: Alveolar bone healing relies on osteoblasts activity and differentiation, with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) playing a crucial regulatory role. Binahong leaf extract (BLE) has demonstrated efficacy in bone healing due to its rich phytochemical composition. Nanogel offers enhanced bioavailability and targeted release to effectively deliver therapeutic agents. This study aims to assess the impact of 3% BLE nanogel on BMP-2 expression in tooth extraction socket healing. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rat underwent anaesthesia for the extraction of their lower incisors to induce alveolar bone healing. Subjects were randomly assigned into treatment (BLE nanogel) and control (base nanogel) group. Five rats from each group were respectively sacrificed at 7, 14, and 28 days after procedures. BMP-2 expression was assessed by performing immunohistochemistry analysis using BMP antibody reagent. Data were analysed using chi-square. Results: The analysis of BMP-2 expression showed no significant difference between treatment and control groups on days 7, 14, and 28 (p>0,05). However, a subtle increase was observed in the treatment group throughout observation period. Conclusion: Application of 3% BLE nanogel may enhance the expression of BMP-2, even though it was not significantly increase. The findings underscore the complex interplay between Binahong leaf extract, nanogel and BMP-2 expression.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesian students' mathematical literacy in PISA assessments remains low, particularly in the Change and Relationships content area. Most existing studies are quantitative and therefore have not revealed the cognitive processes underlying student errors. This study aims to analyze errors and problem-solving strategies of eighth-grade students in solving PISA Change and Relationships Level 2 problems using the PISA mathematical literacy framework (formulate–employ–interpret). A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving 15 eighth-grade students from SMP Al Wildan Islamic School 22 Makassar. The test instrument consisted of three PISA Level 2 tasks with contexts of goods pricing, intravenous drip rate, and currency exchange. Six students were selected through purposive sampling for in-depth interviews. Data were collected through diagnostic tests, semi-structured interviews, and documentation of student work, then analyzed using source triangulation. Results show that average answer accuracy is only 44.4%,with three consistently identified error categories: representation and modeling errors at the formulate stage, procedural errors at the employ stage, and absent result verification habits at the interpret stage. Successful students demonstrate relational understanding and strong metacognitive awareness. This study contributes a specific error mapping per PISA mathematical literacy stage for Change and Relationships Level 2 content, along with operationally distinct intervention recommendations for each error category

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ difficulties in solving PISA Level 4 equivalent mathematical literacy tasks based on the Formulate, Employ, and Interpret (FEI) processes and to identify scaffolding implications at each stage. A descriptive design with quantitative and qualitative approaches was employed involving 28 ninth-grade junior high school students who worked on four PISA Level 4 equivalent tasks. Quantitative analysis was used to map students’ achievement profiles across the FEI processes, while qualitative analysis examined selected students’ written solution traces. The results indicate that students’ difficulties were most prominent at the formulate stage, as reflected in incomplete mathematical representations, although some students were able to carry out procedures (employ) and obtain correct final answers. Procedural errors and conceptual misconceptions persisted at the employ stage, whereas at the interpret stage students tended to stop at numerical results without adequately relating them to the problem context. These findings suggest that the FEI processes are interconnected and conceptually hierarchical, although they are not always explicitly articulated in students’ written responses, and provide a basis for future action-oriented research aimed at improving instruction and students’ performance in PISA assessments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the mathematical literacy skills of students at Makassar State Senior High School 2 in solving Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Level 5 questions, as well as to identify the types of errors and thinking strategies that arise during the solving process. This study was motivated by the low mathematical literacy scores of Indonesian students in the PISA study (OECD, 2021), particularly in the context of highly complex questions that require reflective reasoning and non-routine problem-solving skills. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of 32 Grade XI students from Makassar State Senior High School 2 who were selected purposively. The research instruments were a PISA Level 5-based mathematical literacy test and interview guidelines to identify students' thinking processes. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing based on the Miles and Huberman model, as well as referring to the mathematical literacy framework. Which includes the abilities to formulate, employ, and interpret. The results of the study indicate that most students are still at an intermediate level (Levels 3–4) with a predominance of conceptual and representational errors, particularly in understanding the relationships between variables and converting verbal information into mathematical models. Students with high abilities (such as Banapati Maulana) were able to demonstrate reflective and argumentative thinking processes that reflected Level 5 characteristics, while students with moderate (such as Aura Agni) and low (such as Siti Fatimah) abilities tended to stop at the procedural stage without contextual reflection. These findings confirm that improving students' mathematical literacy requires not only mastery of concepts and procedures, but also practice in reflective, argumentative, and contextual thinking through problem-based and literacy-based learning approaches.
