Abstract

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) education is essential in vocational schools, as practical activities carry a potential risk of workplace accidents. A health promotion approach emphasizes improving knowledge, fostering positive attitudes, and establishing safe behavior through education, strengthening safety culture, and creating a supportive learning environment from the early stages of education. Health promotion efforts in schools are expected to develop sustainable occupational safety behavior among students. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge and attitudes with the practice of OSH implementation among Mechanical Engineering students at SMK N 1 Sawit Boyolali. This research is a quantitative study with an analytical approach using a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through questionnaires measuring knowledge, attitudes, and OSH practices. Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman correlation test. The results showed that most students had a high level of OSH knowledge (70.0%) and positive attitudes toward OSH (67.2%). Knowledge was not significantly related to OSH practice (r = 0.139; p = 0.064), indicating a very weak correlation. In contrast, attitudes had a significant but very weak relationship with OSH practice. These findings indicate that good knowledge does not necessarily translate into consistent safety behavior, while positive attitudes tend to support safer practices, although they are influenced by other factors such as the practice environment, supervision, and availability of safety facilities. In conclusion, strengthening practical OSH learning based on health promotion, improving supervision, and providing supportive school environments are necessary to enhance the consistency of OSH implementation among students. Further research is needed to examine other factors influencing occupational safety behavior.

Abstract

Physical work stress among photocopy workers is an important occupational health issue, often arising from prolonged working duration, years of service, and work fatigue. Preliminary observations identified common symptoms among workers, including headaches, eye strain, and back pain, indicating the presence of physical stress related to job demands. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between years of service, daily working duration, and work fatigue with physical work stress among photocopy workers around Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This study employed a quantitative analytic cross-sectional design with a total sampling technique involving 56 photocopy workers. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, including the Industrial Fatigue Research Committee (IFRC) instrument to measure work fatigue and a modified NIOSH questionnaire to assess physical work stress, and analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that years of service were not significantly associated with physical work stress (p = 0.539; r = -0.084). In contrast, daily working duration had a significant positive relationship with physical work stress (p = 0.001; r = 0.426), indicating a moderate correlation. The strongest relationship was found between work fatigue and physical work stress (p < 0.001; r = 0.823), demonstrating a very strong positive correlation. In conclusion, work fatigue is the most dominant factor associated with physical work stress among photocopy workers; therefore, interventions should prioritize fatigue management and the optimization of working duration.

Abstract

The liquid waste generated by the tofu industry is a significant environmental pollutant, particularly contributing to turbidity in rivers, lakes, and other water bodies. One effective method to address this issue is the treatment of wastewater using alum coagulant. This study aimed to assess the turbidity levels of tofu industry wastewater before and after the application of alum coagulant, as well as to determine the optimal dose or concentration of the coagulant. Conducted in January 2024 at the Public Health Laboratory of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, this research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The data analysis utilized quantitative methods, specifically the ANOVA test, to evaluate the effectiveness of the alum coagulant. The findings revealed that turbidity levels in the tofu industry wastewater decreased following the coagulation process: a concentration of 2 ml resulted in a 22.93% reduction, 4 ml led to a 26.24% decrease, 6 ml achieved a 29.08% reduction, and 8 ml produced a 36.41% decrease. Therefore, the optimal concentration of alum coagulant for effectively reducing turbidity in tofu industry wastewater is determined to be 8 ml, as it demonstrated the highest effectiveness in lowering turbidity levels.
