Abstract

The need for sufficient forest carbon stock measurement system which encompasses a faster and covering broader geographic area is now growing, one of which is the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The objectives of this study were to demonstrate the advantage of ALOS PALSAR application for carbon quantification in mangroves, which apparently provided better relationship in between the L-band backscatters of ALOS PALSAR and the actual aboveground allometric based forest carbon stock of mangroves, compared with previous studies in other types of forest. i.e in tropics or temperate lowland until mountain forests. The better relationship explained by the coefficient determination (R²) of 62 % based on HH polarization with the equation model of Y = 1647.20 + 6.8288BS_HV + 279.48BS_HV + 2870. While previous studies mentioned the R² were only 16 - 76%. The models obtained subsequently were subjected to total carbon quantification and their distributions were mapped. The quantity of aboveground biomass of mangrove forest in Kubu Raya Regency was (Mega grams) or 5.3 Mt (Mega grams), the quantity of carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration reached 19 451 Mt (Megagrams) equivalent. The 71,069.21 ha area of mangrove forest has the potential to reduce the rate of GHG (Green House Gas) emissions from forestry sector by 0.76%.

Abstract

Sungai Opak merupakan sungai besar di Yogyakarta yang melintasi banyak kawasan industri salah satunya adalah kawasan industri Piyungan. Sejak tahun 2012, jumlah industri Piyungan yang menggunakan logam berat semakin meningkat terutama industri penyamakan kulit. Hal ini, berdampak langsung terhadap Sungai Opak sebagai tempat pembuangan air limbah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur kadar kromium (Cr) di dalam air dan ikan pada Sungai Opak. Pengambilan sampel didasarkan pada metode purposive sampling. Analisis kandungan logam kromium pada air dan ikan menggunakan AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer). Lokasi pengambilan sampel ditentukan berdasarkan prioritas yang disusun berdasarkan jumlah dan jenis kegiatan serta distribusi sumber dan jenis pencemar. Parameter yang diukur terhadap 5 jenis titik pengambilan sampel meliputi kromium pada air dan kromium pada ikan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kandungan kromium pada ikan tidak melebihi baku mutu, sedangkan 2 dari 5 titik sampling air memiliki kandungan kromium sebesar sebesar 0,08 dan 0,55 mg/L yang melebihi baku mutu air.

Abstract

Peak discharge is a key indicator for assessing flood potential in a river basin. This study estimates peak discharge in the Way Urang sub-watershed, Pesawaran, Lampung, by integrating remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to derive physical parameters that control surface runoff. The Rational Method was applied, combining the runoff coefficient (C), rainfall intensity (I), and drainage area (A). The runoff coefficient was calculated using the Cook Method, which takes into account soil type, slope gradient, vegetation density, and drainage density. Rainfall intensity was derived from daily records using the Mononobe equation, with time of concentration estimated from the Kirpich formula. Data sources include Sentinel-2 imagery, DEMNAS, rainfall records from 2014 to 2023, and field measurements. The results show a peak discharge of 217.19 m³/s for a basin area of 20.20 km², with a coefficient of variation (C) of 69.20% and an intensity (I) of 55.89 mm/h. High runoff reflects the combined effects of low-infiltration soils, steep slopes, and high annual rainfall. Morphometric measurements yielded a total channel cross-sectional area of 27.91 m² and an estimated bankfull discharge of ~9.53 m³/s, indicating that the channel capacity is far below the peak discharge. This imbalance suggests a high flood potential in downstream areas, particularly in Bunut Village. The findings underscore the importance of integrating spatial data, field surveys, and remote sensing to analyze watershed physical characteristics and to support more effective, spatially informed flood planning and mitigation.
