Abstract

Value Engineering (VE) has evolved from a cost-control technique into a Value Management approach integrating function, life-cycle cost, quality, sustainability, digitalization, and organizational capability. This study maps the themes, methods, and contributions of VE across engineering systems through a systematic literature review. The search generated 1,000 initial records. After deduplication, multistage screening, DOI and full-text verification, quality appraisal, and replacement of ineligible studies, a final corpus of 80 articles published in 2020–2026 was established. The articles were coded into seven themes, 21 subthemes, nine primary methods, ten integrative techniques, and ten contribution categories. Construction and infrastructure formed the largest theme (26.25%), while technical-economic case studies were the dominant method (31.25%). The most frequently reported contributions were cost efficiency (82.50%), decision quality (68.75%), and technical function or performance (55.00%). The review also identifies the growth of sustainability, BIM, automation, multi-criteria decision methods, and life-cycle costing. Major gaps concern inconsistent value metrics, the dominance of single-case studies, limited post-implementation evaluation, and uneven evidence across engineering systems. The study’s novelty lies in a quality-informed theme, method, and contribution evidence map.

Abstract

The potential source of lipid material is spent coffee grounds (SCG). However, simultaneously, polar co-compounds (e.g., caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and cafestol) can be leached using ethanol-based processing, which must be separated in stages. The article is a thermodynamic study on an equilibrium-based multistage coffee-oil separation flowsheet with ethanol solvent (treated as 96 %(w/w) ethanol in this study) and a dry-basis definition of the feed. The flowsheet was adjusted to represent a sequential mixer-separator with solids proceeding stage-to-stage and fresh solvent contacts, with the first and second stages intended to demonstrate the leaching process, and the rest performed the purification process. Stagewise results indicate that cumulative elimination of the three monitored polar compounds is over 97% at Stage 3 and over 99.9% at Stage 4, and there is a plateau in the impurity removal; additionally, Stage 5 provides only slight further elimination. At the fifth level, oil recovery drops beyond the 69% (S/F 1:1, 40 C) to 58 (S/F 5:1, 60 °C), where an equilibrium-based trade-off between separation ability and lipid retention is shown. Varying binary interaction parameters (BIP) by 10% values resulted in slight alterations of recovery and never affected the qualitative stagewise inferences. Since this work is only done with the simulations of equilibrium, all the performance values are to be understood as the thermodynamic tendencies and the upper-bound signal; engineering design is to be suggested with an explicit experiment and with the separation/solvent-recovery studies on the laboratory level.

Abstract

Digital work-system transformation intensifies human-technology interaction and creates a need to understand how cognitive ergonomics is applied, measured, and associated with human and system outcomes. This study maps cognitive ergonomics applications, mental-workload measurement approaches, and their relationships with performance, safety, usability, technology acceptance, and worker well-being. A systematic literature review was conducted on 52 full-text journal articles published from 2020 to 2026. Articles were selected through deduplication, multistage screening, DOI verification, quality appraisal, and extraction of 29 variables. The findings identify five application mechanisms: task and interface redesign, human-technology function allocation, cognitive-state monitoring, decision support and training, and integration into work systems. Measurement approaches include subjective ratings, performance measures, behavioral indicators, physiological and neurophysiological signals, task analysis, and multimodal assessment. Associations with outcomes are conditional because they vary according to task complexity, experience, age, duration, technology transparency, and environmental conditions. The review proposes a three-layer application-measurement-outcome framework in which workload functions as a linking mechanism and a source of feedback for redesign. The findings support multi-indicator evaluation, field validation, and designs that preserve cognitive fit, predictability, control, situation awareness, and recovery.
