Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play an important role in improving performance and mitigating disease because of their ability to maintain the physiological balance of the gastrointestinal tract and resistance to pathogenic bacteria. LAB is one of the bacteria found in the digestive tract. LAB must be isolated from their hosts to increase their efficiency as probiotic ingredients. This study aims to obtain local isolates of LAB a from baby feces through phenotypic identification and antibacterial test. The sample used in the research was the feces of babies aged 1-6 months that patients from Mataram University Hospital. Isolation was carried out by growing bacteria from feces using the Total Plate Count method on MRSA media plus CaCO3. Phenotypic characterization is morphology test, gram stain and biochemical tests. The results of bacterial isolation obtained 8 isolates of LAB. LAB produced a clear zone in the MRSA media, because these bacteria were able to secrete acid in the MRSA. The results of gram staining show that all isolates are gram positive bacteria. Based on the morphology of LAB had characteristic 6 isolates of cocci and 2 isolates of bacilli. All isolates was able to produce an inhibition zone against E. coli with 3 isolates in the moderate category and 5 isolates in the weak category. The best inhibition zone in the medium category is for cocci-shaped bacteria. The existence of LAB isolates from baby feces can be used as a reference source for further research on probiotics such as other antibacterial test

Abstract

Staphylococcus epidermidis can cause various health infections such as in the urinary tract, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, wounds, blood, and endocarditis. Treatment of S. epidermidis infections generally uses chemical antibiotics. However, the use of natural ingredients such as good bacteria such as Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) can be used as an alternative in treating infections by S. epidermidis. LAB is a probiotic that has benefits on human health. This study aims to determine the antibacterial potential of LAB against the growth of S. epidermidis. This research is a laboratory experimental research with post test only design. The stage starts from making media for test bacteria. Then the bacterial rejuvenation stage was carried out using the media that had been made. After the bacteria grow on the media, the bacteria are made into a suspension. Furthermore, antibacterial tests were carried out using the agar well diffusion method and each treatment was carried out as many as 3 repetitions. All isolates were found to be able to produce inhibition zones against S. epidermidis with 3 isolates with codes 01A 10-5, 01A 10-6 (2), and 03A 10-7 (1) categorized as moderate and 5 isolates with codes 01F 10-6 (2), 01F 10-7 (2), 02AF 10-7 (1), 03AF 10-7 (2), and 04AF 10-7 categorized as weak. The best zone of inhibition in the medium category was produced by locus-shaped LAB isolates. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that LAB from baby feces has antibacterial activity with weak to moderate strength, but the antibacterial activity is still classified as ineffective in inhibiting S. epidermidis. Further identification of antibacterial compounds in LAB from baby feces is recommended for quantitative analysis.

Abstract

Uterine Atony is medical condition characterized by the inability of the uterus to contract after labour which can lead to dangerous postpartum bleeding. This condition occurs when the uterine muscles do not function properly to shrink the size of the uterus after childbirth, allowing blood to collect in the uterine cavity. Uterine atony is one of the main causes of postpartum hemorrhage that contributes significantly to the high maternal mortality rate, especially in Indonesia. The purpose of writing this article is to add information related to uterine atony so that early identification and appropriate interventions can be made in the management of uterine atony to reduce maternal mortality in Indonesia. The review method used is a type of literature review that collects and identifies literature related to topics that discuss the definition, epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management and complications of uterine atony.

Abstract

Deep Vein Thromboembolism (DVT) occurs due to the formation of blood clots in the veins, characterized by the formation of thrombi along with an inflammatory response in the inner walls of the veins. DVT most commonly occurs in the deep veins of the lower extremities but can also occur, albeit less frequently, in other areas such as the arms or other forms of superficial thrombosis. This article aims to review the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and management of deep vein thrombosis. The literature review was conducted by searching for relevant articles on deep vein thrombosis published in the past fifteen years. Literature searches were performed using Google Scholar, PubMed, and NCBI databases. The findings highlight the clinical manifestations of DVT and its potential to cause serious complications, particularly post-thrombotic syndrome. Post-thrombotic syndrome is a debilitating condition that can significantly impair patients' quality of life. Management of DVT involves both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Understanding the mechanisms of deep vein thrombosis and its management is crucial in minimizing the complications associated with this condition.

Abstract

Snacks in the school environment have an important role in fulfilling good nutrition and nutrition for elementary school students. Currently, there are still many traders who do not pay attention to the snacks sold both in terms of health, composition, and hygiene. Based on data from BPOM or the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, around 39.96% of snacks that are not eligible for consumption are spread throughout Indonesia. This shows how important it is for school students to pay more attention to their health in choosing snacks in the school area. This also underlies the conduct of counseling on healthy food and snacks in the elementary school environment in the Senggigi area, West Lombok Regency as a target elementary school from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Mataram. The counseling was carried out for grade 1 and 2 students of SDN 2 Senggigi and was carried out on Friday, September 1, 2023 at 09.00 – 10.00 WITA. Counseling activities include providing counseling materials about healthy snacks, singing healthy snack songs, pre and post-tests, healthy snack games, and ending with giving fruits to students as participants in counseling. Furthermore, pre and post-test result data was processed using the SPSS application and there was a change in the average value of students' knowledge before and after the delivery of healthy snack counseling materials.
