Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the implementation of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in teaching listening skills to 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Sutojayan, Indonesia. Employing observations and interviews, the research explores the effectiveness of GBA in a practical classroom setting. Findings indicate that while GBA provides a sound theoretical framework, its success hinges on comprehensive preparatory activities, particularly pre-listening tasks that build vocabulary and contextual understanding. The study highlights the need for differentiated instruction to address varying student proficiency levels and recommends targeted pre- and post-listening activities to boost comprehension and engagement. The outcome of this research is a framework for teaching listening using the Genre-Based Approach. This framework can serve as a guide for applying the same method in other schools. Overall, the research underscores the potential of GBA in enhancing listening skills, suggesting that its effectiveness can be significantly amplified through meticulous implementation and support. Future research should investigate additional strategies to further tailor GBA to diverse student needs and promote overall engagement in listening

Abstract

Literacy is crucial for learning because it helps students understand and work with written materials, but many students today have difficulties with reading, which affects their overall school performance. This study explores the effectiveness of the GEMOY (Gleaming English Game for Youth) in enhancing literacy skills among secondary EFL students of SMPN 2 Dongko Trenggalek. Utilizing a quantitative approach, responses were collected from 25 students who engaged with the GEMOY game as part of their learning process. Data were collected through closed-ended interviews with a Likert scale to assess students' responses to the game's effectiveness in improving their literacy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the overall trend in students' perceptions of the GEMOY game. Secondary EFL students reported an average score of 4.20 for understanding English texts, 4.40 for effectiveness in expanding vocabulary, 4.10 for effectiveness in helping students identify main ideas, and 4.00 for improving sentence writing. These results indicate that GEMOY effectively enhances literacy development by providing an engaging and interactive learning experience. The study highlights the potential of educational games to address gaps in traditional literacy instruction methods and offers valuable insights into integrating game-based learning. The findings suggest that incorporating GEMOY into English language teaching can significantly benefit EFL students by making literacy instruction more dynamic and effective.

Abstract

The integration of educational content with interactive technology in the digital age offers a promising avenue to address literacy challenges. This study primarily presents the development of an Android-based game, gleaming English game for youth (GEMOY), aimed at enhancing English literacy among secondary English as a foreign language (EFL) learner. The game is designed to merge engaging gameplay with educational objectives, specifically targeting improvements in English literacy. The research involved 50 secondary EFL learners and 4 teachers in a needs analysis interview, alongside 3 experts for the validation of materials and media. Employing the research and development (RD) methodology, the study yielded high content validity index (CVI) scores of 0.9 for educational accuracy, 1.0 for relevance, and 0.85 for clarity, indicating strong alignment with educational standards and appropriateness for the target demographic. These validation results highlight GEMOY’s potential to substantially support learners by providing an interactive and enjoyable learning experience. The game’s capacity to engage students while addressing critical literacy skills suggests it could contribute to more effective learning outcomes and the overall enhancement of language abilities. Future research should focus on expanding the evaluation of GEMOY’s effectiveness through empirical studies that assess its impact on actual learning outcomes.
