Abstract

The aims of this research is to analyse about the differences of emotional lexicon used by male and female communication in South Kuta-Bali when they used Balinese language in their daily interaction. The scope of male and female is closely related to the social behavior which includes the social identity of male and female in society and this becomes the basis of how the language is used in this context of social. This research is interested to uncover more how people use language in terms of expressing their emotional in social interaction. This study is a sociolinguistic approach used the theory from Hickey, Raymon (2010). The data source in this study is the south Kuta community who use Balinese language in social interactions. The Data collection is done by observation, interview, recording and note taking and descriptive qualitative method is applied to analyze the data. The result of the analysis found that the emotional lexical is used by the male and female in their social interaction, it could mention that both Augmentatives and Euphemisms is used by male and female in their social interaction however the augmentative is mostly used by female in informal occasion. Balinese female often used prohibition instead of imperative in expressing her idea about ordering someone to do something. In the other hand, the male directly used imperative sentence in ordering something. He usually does not use many awkwardness to say his point in a conversation. This may be considered that the male often go to the straight point when expressing his idea. Keywords: Emotional Lexicon, Male and Female

Abstract

Pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan di Desa Guwang, Kecamatan Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar. Dari hasil analisis situasi dan permasalahan yang dihadapi mitra, tim pengabdi memberi solusi guna memperbesar kesempatan bagi para komunitas pemandu wisata freelance di daerah sasaran untuk meningkatkan kompetensi dalam berkomunikasi di depan umum. Solusi yang ditawarkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mitra dalam berbicara di depan umum adalah dengan pelatihan public speaking. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah: (1) Respon positif dan antusias dari peserta pelatihan, (2) Meningkatnya kemampuan dalam melakukan komunikasi di depan umum sebagai pemandu wisata, (3) Meningkatknya rasa percaya diri dan bersedia mengambil resiko dalam berpartisipasi kepada wisatawan. (4) Meningkatnya kosakata, tatabahasa, pengucapan dan pelafalan. (5) Bertambahnya kemampuan peserta pelatihan dalam berkomunikasi secara lisan baik secara individu/monolog maupun secara berpasangan (6) Meningkatkanya kemampuan peserta pelatihan dalam berkomunikasi dengan mitra tutur dalam situasi yang dinamis dan menyenangkan/ tidak membosankan. (7) Tersedianya media belajar yang menyenangkan

Abstract

Kesantunan dalam ranah keluarga perkawinan antar bangsa sangat penting untuk dikaji agar terjalin komunikasi harmonis tanpa terjadi kesalahpahaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan kesantunan yang digunakan ranah keluarga perkawinan antar bangsa Jepang dengan Bali. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan metode observasi dengan teknik pengumpulan data menyimak, mencatat, merekam dan mewawancarai keluarga perkawinan campur secara natural. Untuk meningkatkan validitas data, maka teknik triangulasi data yang sesuai dengan pola pikir secara fenomenologi yang bersifat multiperspektif digunakan Analisis data induktif kualitatif menggunakan analisis domain untuk membedakan jenis data sebenarnya dilanjutkan dengan analisis taksonomi, analisis komponensial, dan analisis tema budaya. Teknik penyajian hasil analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis secara informal menggunakan kata-kata biasa. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa ada kesantunan yang digunakan pada ranah keluarga perkawinan campur Jepang dan Bali. Meskipun memiliki budaya yang berbeda, namun Ibu Jepang mengimplementasikan pola kesantunan ala masyarakat Bali. Strategi kesantunan yang digunakan adalah strategi kesantunan negatif ditandai dengan pilihan ragam hormat, kalimat interogatif sedangkan wujud dari strategi kesantunan positif ditunjukkan dengan perhatian, rasa simpati dan strategi tutura secara tidak langsung untuk menghindari kesalahpahaman. POLITENESS IN THE REALM OF JAPANESE AND BALINESE INTERMARRIAGE FAMILYPoliteness in the realm of family intermarriage is very important to be studied in order to create harmonious communication without having misunderstandings. This study aims to find out the politeness used in the realm of the marriage family between the Japanese and Balinese. This qualitative research uses the observation method with data collection techniques: listening, recording, recording, and interviewing mixed marriage families naturally. To increase the validity of the data, data triangulation techniques that are in accordance with the phenomenological mindset that is multi-perspective are used. Qualitative inductive data analysis uses domain analysis to distinguish the actual data types, followed by taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis. The technique of presenting the results of data analysis is using analysis techniques informally with ordinary words. The results of the analysis show that politeness is implied in the Japanese and Balinese mixed marriage families. Although they have different cultures, Japanese mothers implement the Balinese style of politeness patterns. The politeness strategy used is a negative politeness strategy characterized by the choice of a variety of respect, interrogative sentences, while the form of a positive politeness strategy is indicated by attention, sympathy, and indirect speech strategies to avoid misunderstandings.

Abstract

Code switching is a phenomenon that will always occurs in bilingual community. People will consciously do code switching in their communication when they have the ability to speak two or more languages. It occurred not only in oral communication but also when they used written form communication on social media like Instagram. This study aimed to analyze the types and speech function of code switching found in parents’ comments on Instagram. This study used qualitative descriptive method to create clear and well organize analysis of the data. The data itself collected from Parentalk.ID Instagram comment section, from feeds posted on May until October 2021. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory proposed by Romaine (1995) to identify the types of code switching and Appel & Muysken (1987) to analyze the speech functions of code switching from the data source. The study concluded that the most types of code switching used is intra-sentential switching and the speech functions are metalinguistic function that used to show off someone’s language skill and referential function that occurred because of lack of knowledge or language facility

Abstract

This study involves the discovery of verbal and non-verbal signs, which also describe themeaning of verbal and non-verbal signs found in the facial wash commercial advertisements. The datawere taken from three printed facial wash advertisements. The data source has been taken from theinternet. This study used the semiotic hypothesis provided by Saussure (1983: 65) to find out theverbal and non-verbal signs and the theoretical meaning provided by Barthes (1977) to find out themeaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in the facial wash ads. The analysis used a descriptivequalitative approach to analyze the results. As a result, the three facial wash ads show verbal and nonverbalsigns that enable the company to market its product. In the verbal signs of the advertising, mostof them contain denotative meaning and non-verbal signs which is in part, contain connotativemeaning in certain advertisements. Two advertisements used a female as a model; one advertisementused a male as a model. This means that advertisers seek to gain public attention through the use ofpretty females, popular figures and natural extracts or ingredients.

Abstract

When the students are able to identify derivational affix, they can develop their vocabulary because from just one word it can gain many words with different part of speech. Novel is a long essay in prose and contains a series of human life stories with others around them with accentuate the character and nature of the actor. In The Hobbit, the story inspired by a children fantasy. From having seeing such phenomenon, the writer found that mastering English is not easy if the students are lack of vocabulary. This research aimed to find out the derivational affixes in in in The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien novel. This research is descriptive qualitative research where researcher tries to find out the derivational affix and the roots from the words in The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien novel without using statistical calculation. In this research the writer uses all of words that are attached prefix and suffix as the data. The data source is all the chapters which are the beginning of the story, rising the case and the solution in The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien novel. The result of analyzing data was gained the derivational affixes that found in in The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien novel showed words are 100 (derivational suffixes).Then the roots from the words that also found are 27 (adjective derived from verb), 49 (noun derived from verb), 3 (verb derived from noun) and adverb derived from adjective (21) Keywords: Function of Derivational Affixes, novel, root, base

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs which are found in Nivea Nourishing body lotion Signs are commonly used in advertisements in order to make them attractive and can deliver the messages properly. This research used a qualitative data collection approach and the data source came from YouTube Nivea Body advertising for the Nivea Nourishing body lotion. Saussure's (1983) semiotic theory uses this research issue to evaluate verbal and non-verbal signs and Barthes' (1977) theory of meaning to examine the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in advertising for body lotion. 5 verbal signs and 9 nonverbal signs were included in the result. In advertisements, most of these signs contain connotative and denotative meanings, with 1 denotative meaning and 13 connotative meanings identified by the researcher. In all ads, the use of connotative significance is prevalent because advertisers use hidden meanings to communicate messages and encourage buyers to try these goods. Abstract

Abstract The aims of this research are to analyse the meaning of verbal and visual signs found in the poster of Grave of The Fireflies. The data of this research were downloaded from the internet. The semiotic theory by Saussure (1983) was used to analyse the verbal and visual sign while the theory of meaning by Barthes (1977) is applies to explain the meaning of verbal and visual sign in the poster. Besides Saussure and Barthes theory, a supporting theory from Wierzbicka (1996) regarding colours was also applied. The data of this research were analysed by using descriptive qualitative method and the result of this research reveal that 3 verbal signs and 5 visual signs were found in Grave of The Fireflies’ poster. These signs contain both denotative and connotative meanings. In which the denotative meaning reveals the literal meaning of the signs and the connotative meaning reveal more explicit meaning about the film such as the theme, the storyline and the character of the film. Abstract

Abstract This article discusses about the meaning of figurative language found in John Legend’ album entitled “Love in the Future”. The objectives of this research were to find out types of figurative language and their meanings in John Legend’s song lyrics. The article, entitled “The Meaning of Figurative Language Found in John Legend’s album entitled “Love in the Future”.To analyze the data, the main theory used in this article is first theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) entitledInterpreting Literature and the second the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) entitled Semantics. This article analyzed the data descriptively by using qualitative method. Thecollected data by browsing and downloading song lyrics from the internet, reading and understanding song lyrics and taking note and classifying the phrase and sentences that contain of figurative language. The data is taken from John Legend’s album entitled “Love in the Future” released in 2013.Type ofmeaning figurative language found in John Legend albumentitled “Love in the Future”are connotative meaning and conceptual meaning. Connotative meaning is the dominant type of meaning found in John Legend’s album.

Abstract

Abstract When it comes to translation there are several things that need to be considered by translator such as the equivalence of messages, grammatical structures and culture value between two languages. Hence why, this is the reason to raise this topic as a study because English is not a native language of Indonesian. This study was focused on to find out the translation strategies which used in English-Indonesian signages at Bali Zoo which located at Gianyar Regency, Bali Province. The translation strategies theory which proposed by Newmark (1988) was used in order to answer the problem of this study. The qualitative method was used in this study. The result showed that there are 5 types of translation strategies can be found based on 22 data which are 7 literal translation (31.81%), 2 faithful translation (9.09%), 2 semantics translation (9.09%), 7 free translation (31.81%) and 4 communicative translation (18.18%). It can be indicated that literal and free translation are the most dominant translation strategies that had been found with each of 7 data. Then followed by communicative translation by 4 data, faithful and semantics translation with each of 2 data. Keywords: translation strategy, signage, bali zoo.
