Abstract

This study examines the teaching strategies employed by English teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Labuan and SMK Negeri 3 Palu to enhance students’ speaking skills, addressing persistent challenges such as anxiety, low confidence, and limited vocabulary. The research aims to identify the strategies used, analyze their classroom implementation, and determine the most dominant approaches. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were gathered from five English teachers through interviews, classroom observations, questionnaires, and documentation, and analyzed according to Oxford’s taxonomy of language learning strategies: memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social. The findings indicate that all six categories were applied to varying extents, with social and cognitive strategies most frequently and consistently used, followed by metacognitive and compensation strategies. Memory and affective strategies were employed less often but still contributed meaningfully to instruction. Teachers adapted these strategies to align with students’ needs, classroom contexts, and communicative objectives. The study concludes that strategy-based instruction, particularly through social interaction and emotional support significantly improves students’ speaking fluency, confidence, and participation. It underscores the importance of combining communicative practice with psychosocial readiness in vocational EFL settings, recommending continuous teacher training, curriculum alignment to foster learner autonomy, and further research incorporating student perspectives and mixed-method approaches.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using word cards in increasing the vocabulary of Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 3 Sausu. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two classes: Class VIII A, consisting of 21 students, served as the experimental class, while class VIII B, with 20 students, served as the control class. The experimental class received instruction using word cards as the treatment, whereas the control class was taught using conventional teaching methods. The samples were selected through total sampling. The study was conducted through a series of procedures, including a pre-test, the treatment, and a post-test. Data were collected using tests, and quantitative analysis was performed to compare students’ scores before and after the treatment. The results indicated a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores. At a significance level of 0.05, the t-count was 6.62, exceeding the t-table value of 1.68, indicating that the research hypothesis was accepted. These findings demonstrate that the use of word cards is an effective strategy for improving the vocabulary of Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 3 Sausu. Moreover, the results suggest that word cards positively influence students’ vocabulary retention, as they facilitate better memorization and recall of target words during the learning process as instructional media. However, this study was limited by its relatively small sample size and its focus on concrete nouns and descriptive adjectives. Future research is recommended to involve larger and more diverse samples, as well as a broader range of vocabulary categories, in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of word cards in language learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether the Pair Work Technique could improve the speaking skill of Grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 14 Palu. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving two classes: Class VIII Albert Einstein as the experimental group (n = 31) and Class VIII Habibie as the control group (n = 27). Both groups were given a pre-test and a post-test to measure students’ speaking achievement. The instrument used was an oral speaking test assessed through a fluency-based scoring rubric. The treatment was conducted over six meetings in the experimental group using structured pair work activities, while the control group received conventional instruction. The pre-test results showed that students in both groups had low speaking ability before the treatment. After the implementation of the Pair Work Technique, the experimental group demonstrated greater improvement than the control group. The post-test results showed that 27 of 31 students in the experimental group met the passing criterion, compared to 17 of 27 students in the control group. The independent samples t-test showed that the obtained t-value (2.79) was higher than the critical t-value (2.009) at the 0.05 significance level with 56 degrees of freedom. The findings indicate that the Pair Work Technique significantly improved students’ speaking skill. Therefore, Pair Work Technique can be considered an effective strategy for developing students’ speaking fluency through increased practice, interaction, and participation in the classroom.
